Apple CDMA iPhone 4 rumor given new wings
With the iPad unicorn now slain, what other beast can DigiTimes shackle its rumor mongering machine to? How about Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology (and inspiration for the ASUS company name) galloping forth with promises of a CDMA iPhone. According to the Taiwanese rumor rag, Pegatron (ASUStek's OEM manufacturing arm) will begin shipping a CDMA version of the iPhone 4 from its Shanghai plants to Apple in Q4. Right, just in time for the holiday shopping season and perfectly aligned with Apple's annual September iPod event... you know, should Apple want to announce a deal with Verizon.

that'd be tight! verizon iphone baby!
i think that would seriously put in a dent in android's sales because right now, a ton of people are choosing android because its the best thing that isn't apple. once iOS is easy accessible, the playing field might see some change. we'll see. i still say 2.2 on an evo is better than iOS 4 on the iphone 4
Whats that? CDMA IPHONE?.....Who said WiMax?!!
@John Stathakis somebody correct me if i'm wrong, but I think that a verizon iphone would outsell the at&t version. the only thing people don't like about the iphone (in addition to it's closed nature) is the fact that its on at&t and makes calls about as well as the ipad. toss a cdma radio in the bitch and you've got yourself a phone.

@John Stathakis Oh god, I could tell this was coming from your first post. The iPhone will continue to do great and Android will continue to dominate and when Windows jumps in the game they will more than likely take a big piece of the pie. An CDMA iPhone is not going to magically make people get rid of their Android phones it will just help spur the third generation of innovation in the smartphone world.
@John Stathakis
What I don't get is doesn't apple have a 5 year contact agreement with AT&t?
@angermeans PS I am glad you took advantage of the fact to hijack your own post four times to try and sell your anti Android propaganda. I'm sure everyone else is to cause they have never heard this information before.
Both are great OS, and with the addition of froyo, and the update after that focusing on UI Android will be even more tempting to non iPhone users. I will say once you go Android its hard to go back, and with Google music coming soon, Q4 is gonna be nice. I do wish Google improves its UI on Android market. I doubt Verizon even wants iPhone, android is making a ton of money for them...
@angermeans
I never said it would. i'm a webOS guy but i'm looking to jump ship to android. even if sprint (my current carrier) offered a cdma flavored iphone 4, id still be going for the evo. i want a phone that i can root and do whatever i want with. also, i'm not a big iOS guy. some people love it for its simplicity; i despise it. i know a ton of people that would have no idea what to do if you handed them an android device. both operating systems fill a niche. don't give me that "i could see this coming from your first post" stuff. stop trolling.
@angermeans
that was referencing your first post btw
@Enellz08 I agree, but everyone wants the iPhone. They just sold 600 k pre sales I am sure Verizon would love a piece of that pie. I really think you are right that Verizon just isn't going to allow Apple to come in and run the show like they do to ATT. The real loser in this situation is ATT as they have yet to land a high end Android phone (unless you are like me and got sick of waiting and dropped $530 for the unsubsidized N1) and once another company has the iPhone especially Verizon ATT will be left in the cold. A mass amount of people will flock to Big Red especially where ATT just dropped their unlimited data plan. A huge early termination fee is not going to stop people just make them more upset. ATT is playing with fire and they have no back up for if and when this CDMA iPhone isn't so exclusive anymore.
@John Stathakis
This is partially why I'm paying the full (no commitment) price for the iPhone 4. If it comes to Verizon, I'll be out of my AT&T contract by Jan. I'll sell my iPhone, recoup most of my loses & be on a network I actually desire to be on. Be afraid AT&T, be very afraid.
@angermeans
dude you dropped $530 on an N1 on at&t? i'm not iphone guy but a 3GS costs 5 times less than that on contract. I don't get why people don't buy phones on contract. you're paying the same amount for the service anyway and you need service to make calls. if you get a smart phone, there's no reason to buy minutes either because the thing is constantly pulling data. you'd have to really hate apple to be willing drop $530 to make a point.
@John Stathakis
Too bad the exclusivity contract with AT&T Is not over until sometime in 2012... So we wont see AT&T getting off SteveJobs's ePeen anytime soon. At least not in the next 6 Months.
@Tuan X
that's a good idea. truth be told, iphones and ipod touches are renowned for their resell value. once its on verizon though, you'll have a very tough time selling the gsm version unsubsidized.
@John Stathakis
I would KILL for a CDMA iPhone!! Hoping Sprint! but I don't care regardless.
@John Stathakis
This would really mess up AT&T because this would remove their flagship phone. More competition please!
@John Stathakis I think that's why you can get a new iPhone if your AT&T subscription ends in 2010. Then they will have you contracted for 2 more years. Makes sense right?
@JonnyB No. Currently a 2yr agreement due to end Q2 2011. But that can be negotiated anytime.
Of course we know this is true. If they mentioned that during the official unveiling back on the 7th, then most people would hold off from renewing on AT&T. This is also why Steve didn't do a Q&A after the session because most people would have asked him about the CDMA version and the case of the lost/stolen iphone - 2 things I am sure he wanted to avoid talking about.
@John Stathakis
Ohhhh lord. I swear we are going to have to go through this EVERY YEAR until they finally do it. I wonder if the Boost Mobile iPhone rumors will start after that.
It's a 5 year deal people. Please shut the hell up until 5 years have past!
@John Stathakis
DAMN YOU RUMOR!!! WHY WON'T YOU DIE!?!?!?
*hack & slash* *hack & slash*
..... WTF!?!??! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh....
@Plazmic Flame
LOL...I know, we keep getting our hopes up every time there is another rumor :(
@John Stathakis
I'm on Verizon now and I'm leaving to go to ATT cause their network is horrible here. I don't have service at my work or at my house. Two most crucial places ever. I experienced more dropped calls with them then on tmobile.
Gsm feels right at home with a sim card. Fast and easy phone switching to Asian and European grey market cell phones and not be carrier locked. And have the 3G work lol since its on same band...
@John Stathakis Fuck Verizon.
@DoctarPeppar
I just find it very unlikely to happen. Our two CDMA carriers in Canada wanted a piece of the iPhone pie too so they teamed up and built a LTE network and got the iPhone in November 2009. Verizon just needs to hurry up and get their LTE up and running.
@John Stathakis Why would you want to buy the EVO, when even Google says they really arent going to support it anymore? Not knocking the phone, but get something else.
@angermeans I don't want an iPhone. I would rather have Android running on the Evo or the Droid X
@Plazmic Flame
I think it could happen. In fact Q4 would be perfect timing, and would explain why AT&T allowed anyone who was upgrade eligible anytime in 2010 to upgrade now -- get them locked into 2 more years before the more appealing alternative shows up.
VeriPhone!
@John Stathakis
Tighten? maybe CDMA? Stupid.
LTE makes more sense.
But then again, if Apple sold a CDMA phone 6months before VZW rolled out LTE, Apple will still make a ton of cash and force all those VZW customers to upgrade to LTE the following year on the eminent release of the "LTE iPhone". It's a sleezy move by Apple if done, but their MO and past history says they [ideally] would do something like that. VZW customers have been dumbed down for lust after the unicorn. Apple will move in for the kill.
@John Stathakis

The big game changer there would be RIM, Google, etc. pushing open app standards that allow apps to float between platforms. It's both attractive to developers and the consumer for future movement.
@Enellz08 Verizon is giving buy one get one free deals. Thats not how you make tons of money. Thats how you kill your profit margins.
@John Stathakis Nah ios 4 on a 3gs will be better than 2.2 except for flash, which isn't personally important, but it's a valid argument, ios 4 on iPhone 4 is a different story
Maybe so, but ATT has rubbed a lot of phone companies wrong, and when the contract ends they'll be begging for other top phones. You might as well call it Steve Jobs phone network
@Plazmic Flame what are u talking about? There are no carriers running LTE in Canada and certainly no iPhone on LTE yet. Verizon is ahead of most companies with LTE build. Also is like to clarify that LTE is OFDM tech not fucking GSM. Wish people wouldn't speak about what they don't understand.
@recharged95
I think some people are forgetting. LTE and WiMax are data only right now. In their current state, they are not replacing CDMA. Neither technology does not do voice. Networks are looking to make this happen, but realistically, I'd say at least 10 years before they could really phase out CDMA.
@Tuan X
it's actually a bit cheaper to extend the contact, and pay the early term. fee, than to buy the phone outright.
@John Stathakis
What's an EVO?? Is that the cheap phone with the screen problem?
Seriously, what part about "5 year exclusive agreement" is going over you people's heads? Why do you think the world is rumored to end in 2012 anyway?
@wArri -- "Too bad the exclusivity contract with AT&T Is not over until sometime in 2012... So we wont see AT&T getting off Steve Jobs's ePeen anytime soon. At least not in the next 6 Months."
Ya know... contracts can be broken.
Apple makes a product... AT&T is a carrier. But there are OTHER carriers. And that's what scares AT&T to death.
Whether AT&T was the only place to get an iPhone for 5 years... or 3.5 years... they had a good run. But, it's time for Apple to wise up and start offering their products on other carriers in America.
Case in point... there are FIVE carriers that have the iPhone in the UK. That obviously doesn't bother Apple. More carriers means more customers could buy an iPhone.
Fun Fact: There are more customers on Verizon than the entire population of the UK.
@wArri - Exactly!
http://www.cultofmac.com/verizon-no-iphone-in-immediate-future/45516
Even "Ivan the terrible's" henchmen are saying it (in so many words). They are all about anDROID right now!
@Frankenstein Black -- "They are all about anDROID right now!"
True... but why wouldn't Verizon want the iPhone... if they could get it?
Think about it... then they would have the Android market, the Blackberry market, and also the iPhone. Who wouldn't want to have that lineup of phones?
AT&T is scared shitless if they aren't the only game in town to have the iPhone... which means the iPhone is pretty important to them.
Which also means the iPhone would be equally as valuable to Verizon.
@Enellz08 I am not so sure Verizon is making a ton of money off of them. With the buy-one-get-one free campaign going on.
@jahkamren hellz yeah! fuck sprint's janky pre/pixi.. i got one for free and gave it to my daughter.. she's 6 and didn't like it.
@John Stathakis
If the rumor is true, Apple is going to continue to put unrelenting pressure on rivals all year long. Such a move should marginally slow Android's rapid growth in the U.S. for a while. There are so many Verizon users that won't switch carriers for an iPhone, so there should be waiting demand over at Verizon.
@Michael Scrip How many of those five UK carriers use North American CDMA/EV-DO REV. A as their cell technology? The problem is that in the US, there is only one cell company that uses the same technology as the iPhone compared to the UK.
@Plazmic Flame Rumor respawing in 3...2...1...seconds.
WTF?
Seriously, it's not happening. Give it up already. I just as much as the next guy would love them to switch from AT&T, but their deal is too good to switch.
