Droid 2 (or whatever it's called) for Verizon breaks cover once again
Nothing new here, but at this point, Motorola's delicious duo of fresh Android phones for Verizon is leaking like... well, like a leaky faucet, we suppose. We've already got the full scoop on the keyboardless 4.3-inch Droid X -- a beast ready to take on sworn enemies from HTC like the EVO 4G and the Droid Incredible -- and we've seen plenty of details on the so-called Droid 2, too. The latter appears destined to replace the original Droid with a better keyboard layout and ever-so-gently refined ergonomics, but the latest leak from a Gizmodo tipster confirms that the cam's still 5 megapixels and it's currently running Android 2.1 atop Moto's new-look Blur (interestingly, the "Droid 2" name couldn't be confirmed). Apparently it's set for release in the "next few weeks," which would line up with rumors we've heard in the past of a launch windows somewhere between July and August -- so here's the real question: X or 2?

Most definitely X
@Frawley Agreed. Though I'm a big fan of my Droid, the screen on the Droid X is beautiful. Dunno about the new button ordering on the bottom... I'm not really sure why they changed that, a little strange.
@Frawley agreed, droid x has everything evo has (omap is considered better even at the same clock, and you can argue sense vs ninja blur) looks dead sexy albeit no 4g but the coverage is lacking.
I plan to get the droid x when i can even if it means forgoing the keyboard
@Frawley
Damn there is a bigger and better Android device every 2 weeks. In 4 Months, the Evo will be considered slow.
@unseen Is OMAP confirmed? If so, that makes me want it even more! (Just hope the screen isn't LCD)
@Frawley
Obviously the clear choice is the Incredible.
Who the hell wants a Motorola?
@JAYZ1881 I have lost a lot of faith in HTC after the evo disaster..
@Frawley in the preview they said it was likely an omap, we can only hope it is
@JAYZ1881
The Droid X blows the Incredible out of the water.
@Prevacator Aside from screen size there are basically no dramatic differences.
Thanks for playing, though.
@Frawley I'm going to have to agree. I just stopped using the physical keyboard last week, and while this seems to be laid out better, it's still the same shitty buttons. The larger screen on the droid x must make that keyboard a dream. I can't wait till the multitouch keyboard .apk comes out and I can put it on my droid.
@JAYZ1881
Who the hell wants cheap plastic?
@Shooter McGavin
That's what she said!
@Frawley yea, a disaster that is still sold out everywhere....i am pretty sure HTC would love to have another disaster going forward.
@Prevacator I love the Incredible, it's sleak, fast and lightweight. It's hands down the best looking Android phone on the market and it's got the Snapdragon so it's quite fast. The X is too large to be a great phone. It reminds me of the old PDA/pocket computers from 5 years ago.
@jxc Of course it sold out with preorders! I bought the evo as well. It wasn't until we actually got to use the phone that we realized the many problems it has. It was a potentially good phone that went wrong.
@nutbunnies
Actually it has a better processor (built at 45nm, vs. 65nm for the Snapdragon) a vastly better GPU, and if it's anything like the Droid, better capacitive touchscreen that doesn't stop working when you stop holding it.
Thanks for playing.
@seanGadget Except people already consider it slow haha
@Bananarama Just use Swype: http://beta.swype.com
@nutbunnies
Much larger screen with higher resolution, faster 45nm processor with much better GPU, double the memory (16 GB vs 8 GB) and better battery (1500 mAh) are all pretty big differences. Plus it will probably come with 2.2 and isn't made of plastic; Motorola's phones are generally very well made.
@JAYZ1881 People who want quality phones. No faulty loose unresponsive screens who fall out of their housing.
@Frawley There should be a poll! =D
@derp
the original droid was the oddball of moto's lineup as far as button layout. I think moto was hoping for it to be the first official google phone, before htc dragon beat em out, and thus gave it the "stock android" button layout
@derp My biggest gripe is the search icon... if they rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, then the icon will appear with the magnifying glass' handle pointing down in either portrait or landscape orientation- and to me, at least, it would seem more natural.
@jxc HTC had less than 50k Incredibles and 65k EVOs on stock for launch. They are struggling to produce more because they don't have enough displays. So it IS a disaster when you can't produce even 100k units for launch or keep it supplied.
HTC only made around 10k HD2 for T Mobile.
So they are selling out due to mostly very constrained supply. When was the last time anyone other than Apple said how many phones they've sold? Never! Why? We all know...
@Prevacator "Vastly better GPU"
Lolwut? The OMAP3 platform (all of them, including the almighty 3630) uses a PowerVR SGX530, which is most definitely NOT better than the Adreno core in the QSD8x50 platform.
(On sole triangles per second: 14M vs. 22M. That said, the SGX535 (used in the 3GS) and SGX540 (used in the A4 and Hummingbird) are certainly better)
As for CPU speed, there haven't really been any benchmarks to compare them, but I'd have to agree. Based on the sole fact that a 1GHz 65nm Cortex-A8 is only slightly (like a couple percent) slower than the 1GHz 65nm Scorpion core in the QSD8x50.
@Frawley
Si, X
I don't need no stinkin' keyboard.
@Frawley I'd go for the Droid 2. I like the physical keyboard and portability. Besides, the Evo is't really popular for the size as much as the 4G and maybe the Sense UI.
My only concern is that with the Blur UI on top that it will reduce the speed at which updates are released.
@stuffman I never thought about that. You are right tho, even tho it is a small gripe it would make sense.
@beatboiii
Motorola phones have been pure garbage for EONS...
Had a chance to play with one the other day when someone traded one in for an EVO, and it felt like a piece of trash.
@TT
Incorrect, the SGX530 is superior to the Adreno 200. You picked the triangles/s figure while ignoring the SGX's 500 Mpx/s figure compared to the Adreno's measly 133, this is the most important number because most 3d apps are fillrate limited. There are other advantages the SGX has over the Adreno as well. Games run better on the Droid than the Qualcomm QSD8×50 equipped phones like the Nexus One, Evo and DInc. Quadrant confirms this.
Also, the A4 still uses an SGX535, not a 540. The Hummingbird uses a 540.
X.
@young wing
Y?
Z!
@BigJayDogg3
Why that makes no sense at all.
@credo
"x[period]"
"y[question mark]"
"z[exclamation mark]"
Makes perfect sense to me.
@credo
With how awkwardly your sentence is phrased, you should not be talking about how something else doesn't make sense.
@seanGadget
double negative much?
@credo
Nope, wasn't a double negative.
@sean
Just put a comma after the why. Get it now? No? Okay replace why with "I do declare."
X, like its even a competition?
Depends on what the definite specs are for this phone. Then again.. I am a sucker for a nice physical keyboard. Also, that Droid X screen size is too big for my tastes.
@ik1t0
Agreed.
The keyboard is going to be the big determining factor.
If it's only barely better than the Droid, then I'd go with the X, unless that's too big to be pocketable.
Neither. 32 gb iPhone 4 FTW!
@Pure Calculus ftl.
@Pure Calculus seriously? You had to
Droid 2 (or whatever it's called) only because the X is massive. For me, its blurred the line between phone and tablet.
@Special Agent Steve
Did you even look at the pics? The device looks just as large, if not larger (thickness due to the keyboard) than the "X".
I'm definitely ready to jump on the Android wagon next month, and I've been leaning more towards the "X"
@JubbaTheHutt
Did you even take a second to look at the fucking article?
"Held next to my original Droid, it seems exactly the same size"
@JubbaTheHutt
There are quite a few photos of the X, including comparison shots with the Droid, Evo, etc., in the X preview article. It's basically the same size as the Evo, slightly taller but not as wide or as thick. The Droid 2 is more or less the same size as the first Droid.
@JubbaTheHutt
You don't need a comparison. The Droid2 is the same size as the Droid.
The X is going to of course be bigger because of its 4.3 inch screen. We know it is. I don't care about pics because I can use common sense to say "Droid 2 size = Droid 1 size, X is larger than Droid1, therefore, X is larger than Droid2"
ez.
