The Droid X gets real on Verizon (update: 720p video capture, not display)

Looks like Verizon and Motorola are coming clean with the Droid X a little earlier than planned -- it just appeared on the official Droid page, complete with confirmation of that 4.3-inch screen size. Interestingly, rolling over the image reveals a box that says it has a "720p screen," which would be crazy -- especially since the Droid X prototype we played with had what looked to be the same 854 x 480 resolution as the original Droid, although we couldn't confirm it at the time. A true 720p screen res would also be far denser than the 800 x 480 panel on the EVO 4G, so we're thinking Verizon actually means 720p out over HDMI, not anything else. We'll see though -- the official launch event is still set for June 23, and we're still waiting to find out about the slider Droid 2, so there are a lot of potential surprises still to come.

Update: We just confirmed that the Droid X prototype we saw had an 854 x 480 display, so we'll have to see if Motorola and Verizon have a serious surprise for us come Wednesday -- we know at least one Engadget editor who's crossing his fingers.

Update 2: Sure enough, Verizon has changed the ad to read "Captures 720p" instead of "720p screen," so that would basically confirm the 854 x 480 display. A nerd can dream, though! See the revised site after the break.

I've been an iPhoner since day one but had been hearing so many good things about the Android OS and was looking forward to changing over... Ordered an EVO from Wirefly on June 7th, order went through... Then got an email stating item was out of stock and would be approximately 20 days out! I have played with an EVO and LOVE the size of it, probably THE major selling point and the main reason I was gonna move on from my faithful 3G... "Not to mention Sprint would be $35 less a month!

But after all the research I've done on Android and the EVO "Blogs, Youtube videos" The Android experience and EVO's build quality and documented issues ended up wearing on me... I was gonna get the EVO for 30 days to make more of an educated decision but why risk it? I already know how much I enjoy the iPhone and the new polished design and retina display kind of sold me... If only the screen were bigger!!!! Hopefully next year Apple will unvail iPhone 5th Gen with a 4" screen! That would be perfect!

Oh, and Apple, can we make some OS improvements/changes to freshen up a bit? AND can we get an Android type weather native app?!?! Please?!?!

Anyway... Everyoe needs to just calm down and stop throwing expltive at each other! Really, over phones?!?! Get a life fanboys!

Form factor looks a ton better. I like the physical buttons for home, menu back and search as on my Eris I keep accidentally bumping them while typing essentially screwing up whatever it is I am attempting to do.

I like the physical keys as well. I'm using the EVO right now and I keep on hitting the bottom keys by accident. The only thing is the droid x is kind of ugly with that bump. Might wait for the droid 2

@kettyserene Agree on the physical buttons, disagree on Droid 2... Not a fan of keyboards... But to some that's a MUST... So to each their own... This phone would be much better with the hump (although this may keep it from laying directly on the camera lense when set down) and def needs a front facing cam... I personally could care less about an HDMI out... It's going to be the most unused wasted part of any phone that has it... Guaranteed! Although, some might say that about a front facing cam lol

I totally agree regarding the physical buttons... Played with an EVO for about an hour and kept touching the capacitive buttons by accident... Can get frustrating... That being said, this phone does look beautiful but doesn't look to have a front facing cam and looks to be a bit toooooo big! I would be ok with the bigger bezel if it had capacitive touch buttons so you have some real estate as to hold and avoid touching in error but since it has physical buttons, I'd prefer a smaller bezel... I also beleive Moto has better build quality then HTC so all in all... Looks great! Although I prefer EVO's screen/bezel layout with a smaller bezel/widerer screen compared to Droid X...

Ya ok you have 4.3" screen who gives a shit. I would rather not have a screen that big that is still a phone and you have to makes call on it still I would rather not have something that big up to my face!! Furthermore they made it big cuz they probably don't have the skill to put everything on a small device I'm just saying.. COME ON FOR REALLY going with the removable battery. I haven’t heard anyone bring that up except when they don't have anything else to say!! I mean that is another reason it’s so big. If you haven’t notices every droid that comes out (which is starting to be like ever month) it gets bigger and iPhone gets smaller. I mean iPhone gets long batter life, faster processor, better graphic, better camera, and much much more and still can still go down on size. But over here is the droid getting bigger while trying to get a better battery, and camera and some other stuff. They have to make it bigger to try and compete with iPhone. Haha… Amazing camera it shot the same 720p as the iPhone 4 its not like it's any better! O but the iPhone 4 has the advanced backside illumination sensor. Open source apps if you forgot these smartphone are made for general public most of them don't give a crap about open source or not, long as it works and it is easy to use and they have ALOT of app to choose form like 200,000 and growing so ever fast!!! O and that brings me to the other part customizable OS is good if you know what you are doing. But like @Profit said most of the time they screw it up cuz they don't have any idea what they are doing!! So in the next few month when another like 3 more come out its going to be like huge ass big haha!! If the droid ever has 600,000 order in one day they we can really talk. But until then we can just let the public decided what they want and I think they have speak.

Droid™ phone's are Verizon phones i.e. they run on a CDMA network, therefore they are incapable of transmitting and receiving voice and data simultaneously.

In other word's they are incapable of multitasking in the same way as an iPhone on a UMTS HSDPA network is.

I ONCE AGAIN could disagree more. everything you;ve said is based on opinion but when it comes down to it here are the facts that i know, the only actual advantage the iPhone gets from being so small is battery life, while this phone will most definitely be faster and have better graphics than the iPhone 4.While I don't exact benchmarks as of yet im confident at the Ti 3630's abilities as I've seen it trump all 1 Ghz processors while running at 720 Mhz except the Samsung Hummingbird processor. As for camera, iPhone may use generally better sensors, the sensors used on the Droid are amazing and I noticed an immediate difference in the quality between that and the iphone 3GS. Whlie i don;t know if the camera on the iphone 4 will be better or worse im extremely condifdent at the camera on this beast to be able to match up to or surpass the camera on the iPhone 4. as for the removable battery, I find it a pretty bigg deal becasue when i sign up for a 2 year contract i start to notice my battery life go at about the year mark so i like to replace the battery, can your iphone do that? thought not

But then again it like Hp, Dell, Sony, and ect. they all have these replaceable batteries and you have to get some BIG ASS 12 cell to just get up to like 6 hours. When you can buy a Macbook, Macbook Pro and get 8-10 hours out of them depending the on the size and with a life cycle of 5 years!!!!!! So mean same thing here. You just get better stuff with Apple and I mean since you use Droid you really wouldn't understand really good quality. Maybe one day!!!
O and by the way just a little background on my tech stuff I have had Windows for most of my life and i used many different android based phone and use a friend droid for while to just see how it was. and have used many other type of smartphone too. I have used 95,98, 2000, XP, then got my mac after that and when vista come out WELL I just LOL. Before I got my mac I actually worked on windows base computer like fixing them and ect.. So ya I used other tech product but they all can even come close to Apple products its really and truly amazing how much better Apple products are!! So I actually can say Apple is better!!!!!!!!

1. I have and still us a windows base computer. to just keep up with there tech stuff. I only like Xp other OS's just SUCK Ass. But every time I us it i get pissed and it's slow and i have update it all the dam time!! There is a lot of other crap it SUCKS ass. Also like I said before I use a lot of different version of Windows and different hardware brand also! I did repair and tech support for Windows base computer for a long time. But give me Hp or Sony with Linux and Im a fan. it run pretty smooth and not to many problems!!! But this they don't come close Mac's

2. Lets talk smartphone now. So I have used tons of different phone. android base one, then just the hardware company who TRY to make there on OS which are terrible! I have used the droid phones. I didnt like it at all but it is better than other phones I have used. But not the iPhone.

3. SOOO LETS SEEEE….
I have use Microsoft computer most of my life and Did tech repair for people. I like Linux base computer. I have used ALL different kinda of cell phone also. I agree that the droid is better than other phone. minus iPhone

But when they come to comparing to Apple's products like Mac's and iPhones. Nothing can come close to the great integration you get in apple products there OS's are so so smooth and run extremely easy. There both really simple have amazing software that come with them. They hardly have issue. If you want me too I can list all the people I know who have mac and used windows and get them to write what they thing about both and O these people are not tech people at all. So even people that are not techies know what is better. Haha!!! O and don't give that Bullshit that macs are to simple that you can do anything on them. Because most people in the general public just want it to JUST WORK with out any problems and be easy. If you are a techie person then you SHOULD know that mac are very customizable if you know how to. But like I said most people want it work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ex. my mother is in her Fifties. they had Windows Xp computer she would ask me how to stuff all they time and ask me to update it and all kinda of stuff everyday. Got them a mac and she no ask one question at all. They have had there mac for about 2 months NEVR USE one before. She used windows all before that and asked question up to the last day we had. Same thing will iPhones.

I mean DAM if that does't tell Apple products are better then your just a DUMB FUCK!!!!

Well apparently their both suppose to have the exact same processor. The differences seem to be the screen, the Droid X has 4.3 inch and the Droid 2 has 3.7 inch, the camera, the Droid X has an 8 megapixel camera while the Droid 2 has a 5 megapixel camera and also the 8 megapixel camera on the Droid X takes 720p HD video but the Droid 2 might also take HD video but it hasn;t been announced yet

Maybe we'll get 720p - nay, 1080p - when the 4G/LTE version of the Motorola Droid comes out. Hope it comes out by April of next year (but after April 1 so no one thinks it's an April Fool's Joke). I want a 4G Verizon phone, supersized like a scientific calculator, baby!
