ForceTek XIO: the gaming controller that hurts you, not the TV (video)
Forget the Wiimote, PlayStation Move and Kinect; here's a controller that actually makes you feel the games. At E3 earlier this week, startup firm ForceTek was seen demoing its XIO Virtual Gaming System -- a rather fancy name for a force-feedback arm exoskeleton that "provides a controlled resistance" to your arm and wrist movement. The rig sure looks like a great addition for action games -- imagine feeling a virtual basketball bouncing, or your virtual machine gun recoiling, or even the reaction force from a virtual punch. Want it now? Try next year, when the XIO will apparently ship at a "competitive" price comparable to that of a guitar for Guitar Hero. See the controller in action after the break, and try not to wince.

Now to wait for the virtual body suit :-)
@moodmuzik
His robodance is killing me.
@moodmuzik One step closer to true virtual reality.
@moodmuzik now this is something i'd buy
@moodmuzik
This is the future of gaming. Imagine scanning your boy from 36 different angles and having it virtually move within a virtual environment while feeling the resistance. People always cringe at the thought of these types of virtual worlds, but for an hour or four of virtual soccer would be elfin sweet.
People say why not play the real thing, but like, why do it when you can be better virtually. Now don't quit on the real life, but have fun in the virtual world.
@moodmuzik
A virtual body suit could get out of hand real fast. But could also be the fastest selling accessory for young males.
@moodmuzik I'm waiting for the X-rated version.
@OmbreDesigns they already have it. It looks like a flashlight....
and as a young male I can tell you I am not interested in it at all
@moodmuzik. Call it iBody,say it's revolutionary and you will sell it well.that's sad but true.
That could build muscles....
Screw the Wii Fit now!
@DefusedHero
Not so fast.. He seems to be talking allot of donky dung. All systems, Full support for every game without the need of help from the game developers, and it learns your movements.
@Oldarney
I can see what he is saying. You can calibrate it so when you hold your arm out, it can perform an action like raising the rifle scope up, or increase the airplane speed like in the demos. You could calibrate it so when you raise your elbow and rapidly move it downward, it will simulate a melee attack, or if you put your arm to your side, it would switch weapons. It probably uses a couple encoders, gyros, and/or potentiometers to get the arm positions. It would work for many games, but not all of them.
@ThreeDee912
Forgot to add: it's like binding keys on a keyboard in a computer game. Say pressing the Triangle button on a PS3 controller zooms in a rifle scope. You can calibrate the arm controller so when your arm is in a certain position, it will be like pressing the Triangle button. Judging from the video, it probably can also send "pressure sensitive" feedback, like pressing a trigger button on the PS3 controller half way increases aircraft throttle a bit, extending your arm half way will do the same.
hmm...
In Soviet Russia...video game play YOU!
@matt1980
In Soviet Russia you make joke funny.
@Fenikkusu
Seriously though! Imagine a dance-genre game with these things on arms and legs...
Vaporware.
@o TINY o
not ready to call it vaporware......... yet. but will not be surprised if that is what it will come to. all in all this looks pretty awesome, but skeptical about all system support.
OMG!! yes!!!
Pssh, I'm still waiting for the controller that actually kills you when you die.
@Enyoface1
emo gamers....
what has the world come to.
@Enyoface1
It's ok, you have another life.
@Enyoface1 thats probably already in-place as the new electric chair and if you dont die in the game you dont die in real life
@Enyoface1
that might be a new form of torture
lol, if mario dies you die too
if nathan drake dies you die too
if chief dies... oh you get it
@manofchao5 I guess I will have to only play bioshock...
@Enyoface1
When you die in the game, it should taser you until you go into cardiac arrest. Then the device will defibrillate you until you respawn.
One Nintendo Power Glove away from perfection.
now I can slap that grin off the dog in Duck Hunt's face...and feel it.
really nice
No one else will probably get this, but the first thought that came to my head when watching those videos was "This would be incredible with a game like Armored Core".
Imagine the feeling of being in a huge robotic suit, controlling it with precision. Any mech game would do, but the Armored Core series is, in my opinion, the most accomplished robot-creation series I've ever played.
P.S. AC4 failed in comparison, imo. AC3 was the best in its series.
@Dekstar 2 words. Steel Battalion
@Dekstar OMG you 2 rule.
With more work that could easily be the future of gaming. I'd take that over a crappy wiimote, playstation move or xbox kinect anyday!
I had a wet dream about this thing in 1999, after imagining what it would be like to be able to feel the cars I drive in Gran Turismo 2.

Much better video.
So if my arms are broken in the game will they break in real life? Now that would make for some immersive gameplay. I predict very short rounds in street fighter and ufc undisputed.
Well, I'm still waiting for something that let you feel a world of hurt when you got shot in the face. Imagine the irony.
martial arts, baby!
It's not only fun, but a workout. I like it :)
@angelusp
What is invovled in jilling a console accessory?
Poor interviewer. He has my voice. So I know his pain of having a poopy voice
i like this a lot better than kinect and move!
If you tried to actually play using that in a real COD game, you would get destroyed biig time. I'd like to know what the learning curve for it is.
@angelusp
Yeah this is way more accessible than Natal. "Here mom strap on these bionic arms so that we can play bowling. Here dad I bought a third pair of bionic arms for you too." There's a significant element of practicality that is missing from this device. Not to mention that it receives no feedback from your legs or head or hips or mouth like Natal.
it looks cool but also very tiring holding your arm out like that for a hour or two when playing CoD
i love the Power Glove.... Its so Bad...
YESSS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZErvASwdlU&feature=related
im not sure what it does still.. i guess you have to wear it
Now they just need to come out with a Dune game so you can yell, "Muad'Dib" and blow your arm off.
momma said these were my magic gloves
