Nintendo 3DS game cart pictured, wireless ebook reader on tap?
It was easy to get lost amidst all the attention surrounding the 3DS itself, but Nintendo also had an actual 3DS game cart on hand at E3 and, well, it looks pretty much like a regular DS cart (probably a good thing, since the two are compatible). About the only difference, it seems, is that small extra tab on the corner, and a slightly slimmer case that they'll come packaged in. In other overshadowed-by-E3 news, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has apparently told Nikkei that the 3DS' wireless connection could be used to automatically download newspaper and magazine articles (and books, presumably) which, when combined with the 3DS' ability to actively seek out and connect to any open WiFi network, could potentially turn into a Whispernet-like service from Nintendo -- something that Iwata has, incidentally, publicly mused about in the past.

No matter how hard Nintendo try, there's always way to hack and piracy their device.
Digital tumor?
@Edmunn 3D BOOOKS!!!
@techlord
Here's my question... WHY DO THEY HAVE GAME CARTS?
I thought the cartridge days were dead and we were going to digital downloads.
@gracefulspammer
Maybe because there are still consumers who don't have an antiquate internet connection. Or do but still wish to actually *own* their games.
And the PSPGo wasn't exactly a top seller. I think 100% digital distribution in dedicated gaming consoles is still a very long way off.
@gracefulspammer Some people don't want to be trapped into a one store model where there are no discounts ever.
cart != card.
@frysee Incorrect. They are equal. They are both solid state mediums.
@frysee Just like
Jedi = Scum
Cart = Cartridge
@Extinction
Cartridge != Memory Card
A cartridge when plugged in, is physically connected to the system bus, it's an extension of the system's hardware. It's like plugging in a PCI card into your PC.
The memory card, like an SD card, is media. It requires reader hardware and has a file system, but is otherwise independent of the system. It's also a lot cheaper than a cartridge.
DS uses memory cards, Game Boys used cartridges.
@frysee I'm just doing my part to keep the word "cart" alive.
@Raffi256 "Cartridge != Memory Card"
False. They are equal.
@Extinction
They're not equal, I just explained what the differences are.
@Raffi256 He's just trying to flame you.
Why the tab?
@Macc55 Physical region locking! Remember the notches on the original Gameboy carts?
@EngineF Not region locking, system locking.
@Macc55 So people don't try and use it in a DS?
So it won't go into an original DS model. When Game Boy Color-only games were introduced, they changed the physical cartridge so that it wouldn't fit into an original Game Boy with the lock-in tab connected to the power switch. That tab didn't exist on Game Boy Pocket or Color.
Does anyone proof read here anymore?
@yankees368 Hey hey hey! I'm are plenty smart.
@yankees368 Be nice, he's canadian.
@yankees368 Proofread*
@ReginaPhalange doh!
I'm glad Nintendo has never succumbed to the sexy, feminine wiles of optical media for their portable devices.
So much F A I L. Digital downloads would of been so much better. Who wants to carry 10 games plus system.
@anotherworld Because the PSPGo was such an amazing success?
@anotherworld You ever heard of the PSPgo?
@eisbehr Ever heard of something called "new handheld"? Pspgo failed cause of a few things.
1. It's not a new hand held.
2. Sony screwed it's customers with old UMD.
Is Pspgo would of been psp 2 with digital downloads it would of been a success.
@anotherworld who wants to carry 10 games + a system? 2 million DSi XL owners. That freaking handheld introduced NOTHING new and outsold the PSP Go by a lol-wide margin.
I was praying that maybe Sony would announced a PSP2 in their keynote, but alas were un-answered.
@anotherworld
Can I please borrow your time machine when you're done with it?
@anotherworld
DS cartridges are tiny. Carrying a few of them in your pocket is hardly a burden.
@anotherworld
Personally, I like buying physical games. Holding games feels good
Ebook reader (ha): The Nintendo 3DS (ha) will beam text right into your retina.
Don't forget these carts can hold 2GB at launch, they will probably increase with time as it seems every Nintendo cart has. Considering the GC had 1.5GB and the PSP has 1.8GB with a dual layer disc.
@reallynotnick
*that should be plenty
wow, forgot to finish that sentence...
@reallynotnick
Yeah, I'd say that a 4GB card down the line is a given. Perhaps a 8GB later on. That's not much less than a dual layer DVD.
2GB carts seems plenty big for most portable games. Unless there's going to be a ton of video and voice on the game, like with maybe Final Fantasy or MGS ports.

It looks like an SD card is inside
The 3DS. Downloading and printing money in 3D!
Price?
Date?
Backward compatibility?
Until those questions are answered...I don't want to hear any more. :)
I'm already curious to play with the 3D camera. I skip Nintendo iterations. The last one I bought was the DS Lite. I skipped the DSi and the DSXL
Backwards compatibility with DS games was confirmed in the original press release.
@HektikLyfe As soon as I saw that Dead or Alive was confirmed I was sold. Ayane + 3D = YES.
