Palm confirms new devices, webOS upgrade
Ever since HP CEO Mark Hurd said he wasn't interested in smartphones, it's like the company's been making up for lost time -- first by denying the exec's predilections, and more recently by actually asking us to speculate wildly. Now Palm's Developer Relations team has reportedly stepped in to confirm that speculation, telling devs that future devices and a new version of webOS are on the way. While there's no knowing if those devices are smartphones or when we might see them, we're told to expect a "very exciting" next year.

HP is not interested in it but Palm is
@raiden8383
:o
@raiden8383 New WebOS device?? Didn't Sprint had something in there roadmap called the Palm C40??
Did he say NEXT year? As in not this one but the one in 6 months and then some? Argh :-/ They obviously read engadget but don't know the meaning of "NAO".
@raiden8383
wow. I just hope the new phone is as good as the EVO or iPhone 4 as far as build quality. The Pre didn't do as good as it would have if it wasn't for all the build issues like the "oreo twist" and the scratch prone screen.
@raiden8383
Why wouldn't HP be interested in a Upgrade to the Palm OS. Especially when they may use it in tablets and other devices. They'll need something to keep up with android at the very least...
@PlatinumSkeet um PalmOS and WebOS are completely different.
@gargle
Actually, he said "...I think, you're going to find the next year very exciting.”
THE next year (from this point forward), as opposed to 'next year.'
@raiden8383 HP is not interested in it but WE DO!!!!!
@raiden8383 that's like saying neil is gay but patrick harris isn't.
@benthe1 hmm, have had my pree for over a year now and none of those issues... You must be one of those people that read stuff online and then pretend that it happen to you!! EVO build quality? Like the glass from the screen popping up? Or the battery lasting less than the pre's? Ya...
@robdmau
I have two original Sprint Pre's from day of release. Both Pres look like new, never had any hardware issues. I just picked up an Evo, and it is built solid. Sign me up for a new WebOS device.
After what CEO Hurd said, I'm not getting my hopes up about a smartphone. They clearly used the word "device" instead of "phone."
@robdmau Your kidding? My 2nd Pre twisted so bad I tried to get it exchanged, which Sprint wouldn't because it was "normal".
I had my 1st about 2 weeks before I knew I should have a screen protector and it had pot marks and scratches. I takes very good care of my phones.
The Evo its rock solid. All phones will have some quality issues. The Evo isn't in the same ballpark as the Pre, not even the same game build wise.
It will be "very exciting" next year to see how HP tries to compete with companies that didn't take a year off of releasing great smartphones. Good move letting iPhone, Android and Windows 7 phones get a nice long head start before coming out with newer WebOS phones.
Lets just hope they can catch up to the competition!
@Xent lets hope they don't fail, I was looking at the os on the pixi and I think there's a lot of potential on it, I would like to see a much better, more defined web OS, on better devices.
@Christianojedavzw better devices? Really? It's people like you that I just laugh at.. Hmm pre has the same processor that the Droid has (pre came out 1st), the only processor better is a snapdragon right now... Keyboard is small but SO MUCH beter than any other out there! No reaching for keys or anything, all right there! Friend has an EVO and I blew him out of the water with a 500MHz, year and a half old palm pre... He could not keep up with anything unless it was loading pictures or anything that was sole on CPU! He tried to take a pic, send via text, upload to facebook, check the latest world cup score, send a tweet and then make a call and play and game at the same time!! Pre had no problem at all! Nothing wrong with hardware, just BAD marketing!
@robdmau
Chill out, dude. I think he was saying the Pixi sucked, not the Pre.
Either way, I'm still pissed about the whole "we're not in the smartphone business" statement. When the CEO says that, no amount of back-peddling can reverse it.
@robdmau "...pre has the same processor that the Droid has (pre came out 1st), the only processor better is a snapdragon right now..."
Processor speed is not the only criteria for being a good processor. The thorughput architecture also matters and Snapdragon is not really good when it comes to that.
@Xent
That's my worry, WebOS being stuck in the mud. The only way they can get out of this one is to reveal a new phone every 2-3 months. It's aggressive, but probably the only way to get people excited again and get the damn things sold.
@robdmau that's a bunch of bull. But thanks for the laugh.
@robdmau
I think its safe to name you the brooklynsfinest of webos... every os has to have on tho so don't feel bad
oh shoot, i was banking on the coffee machine app store idea,
WebOS on phones? wheres the fun in that!
@Zylam ya kinda like google in a chevy! Lol nothing like a horrible OS telling a horrible car that the window won't roll down!
@Zylam
And NEXT YEAR?! My Pre is life support and there is no way it's lasting until 2011. I guess it's take my chances with the EVO or wait for another Sprint phone to drop. I will miss you WebOS.
Well it'll be nice to see some new WebOS devices out.
I hope Palm makes some more smartphones because I'm tired of seeing just the Pre and Pixi with the OS.
Not to say those are bad phones,it's just nice to see an OS on some different handsets.
They could start by making the lil light on the front of my laptop not flash when it's on standby... then they can make some smartphones.
@jeremynmo I'm sure that's next on their to-do list.
@jeremynmo They're still for a multi-million takeover first in order to do that. After they've found a suitable company to buy, it'll take 6 months to actually buy them followed by making a statement that they'll 'be removing the lights from many of their devices' and then they'll actually do nothing.
@versp A boy can dream.
tell HP "fuck yaa!"
@WillSmith
Will Smith doesn't use the "f" word.
If you're going to call yourself "WillSmith" and use his picture as your avatar, at least stay in character. Dayum.
webOS has great potential, let's hope they beef it up and get some decent marketing going!
I hope that their smartphones will not suck in quality like their computers and printers. I went through 2 HP Pavilions, 1 printer, 1 scanner and a PDA (ipaq). They all broke down due to poor build quality.
@bathellfire
those 2 HP Pavilions, 1 printer, 1 scanner and a PDA (ipaq) had another thing in common other than who was the 'manufacturer'
perhaps poor quality is not the real cause
@balthazar
Oh snap!!
@bathellfire after all those products, I'm going to have to say user error! Let me guess never had an issue with an apple product right?
@bathellfire after all those products, I'm going to have to say user error! Let me guess never had an issue with an apple product right?

@robdmau I also have an Acer which has no problems, and i got a Compaq laptop from 1997 (my dad's old one), before Compaq was bought by HP - still works fine. And yes, I also have 2 Apple laptops and 1 Mac Mini which work fine.
In regards to printers, I have a Samsung all-in-one laser printer and Brother in the office - they work great too.
So it's not me, it's the quality issues with HP products. Google it, you will see that i am not the only one who has issues. And I am not an Apple fanboy, since i have PCs as well, and i like them, cause they work, unlike my HP pc's.
@bathellfire I don't know if you use you laptops as base ball bats or what, but both hp laptops I've owned have been rock solid
@Aeolus You on dial-up?
why cant i just have a blackberry bold with WebOS on it? i would also accept WinPho7 but would prefer WebOS
@SteveyAyo umm, you can, pam pixi, thiner, lighter, best keyboard out and webOS
@robdmau
LMAO I THOUGHT PALM FANBOYS WERE EXTINCT. STEP YOUR PHONE GAME UP OLD ASS PHONE AND YEA I'M YELLING
@robdmau um Plam Pixi is not the same as a blackberry bold and NO it doesnt have the best keyboard out... i want RIM to start licensing WebOS or WinPho7 ASAP
@jeremynmo No, he telegrammed it in.
Palm need to
- Release WebOs devices in all of Europe, especially Northern Europe.
- Release a device with a 3.7-4.0 inch touch screen
- Make it more "profitable" for app developers to creat appz on WebOs (90-10 % ratio)
@tvoben
I agree with your points, except for the 3.7-4.0 inch screen. Bigger screen maybe, but honestly the current size on the pre (3.1) isn't terrible, and I can't see them increasing it beyond 3.5 without making the device ginormous and un-pocketable. And if you're implying sacrificing the hardware keyboard... I sincerely hope the palm designers aren't listening
