Palm confirms new devices, webOS upgrade
Ever since HP CEO Mark Hurd said he wasn't interested in smartphones, it's like the company's been making up for lost time -- first by denying the exec's predilections, and more recently by actually asking us to speculate wildly. Now Palm's Developer Relations team has reportedly stepped in to confirm that speculation, telling devs that future devices and a new version of webOS are on the way. While there's no knowing if those devices are smartphones or when we might see them, we're told to expect a "very exciting" next year.

@mittortz I agree. They did name themselves Palm afterall.
HP sucks at everything, Bets on how they will ruin WebOS? I mean print drivers are over 300megs , really now
@Hydra
not the new printers.......new printers have 64mb built in memory so that the driver is built in no more looking for drivers online or having a disk.
@Hydra
It seems you've been downloading the full driver package w/ all OS drivers, including optional software, instead of the drivers only.
@jeremynmo hahahaha
Well, they will have the same challenge as WinPho7. The wall is pretty high already with phones like the Nexus One, Evo, and iPhone 4 on the market. I hope with the capital backing of HP, they can be aggressive in the pricing without cutting corners on the hardware. Oh, and why not update the Pre Plus with penta-band HSDPA, and sell it unlocked for $300? With the extra RAM, I'm sure Palm can squeeze more life out of the Pre Plus.
"Next Year".
*sigh*
I hope they use glass this time...
PrEVO.. a giant phone running on 4G. Wait, wont LTE be out pretty extensively by mid 2011. Scratch that. I guess, I'll just take a faster, better camera, more internal memory, more ram, better battery, and video out(micro usb to hdmi), Pre. Can we call it the "First"? That way the non-slider can be called the "Fairy", lol
@jeremynmo I'm surprised none of you figured out I wasn't serious.
I think WebOS has the most potential out of all the mobile OS to translate well into general purpose consumer electronics. It's got enough there to power a tablet and as HP is doing, translating it into printers.
There's a chance here (provided Hp puts full support on it) that WebOS can potentially achieve what Android is aiming for. And unless MS rolls out a tablet tailored OS, I can see WebOS being the OS "for everyone else not using an iPad".
@ounkeo I loved WebOS but they missed their best chance. Android its crushing, it'll be hard to play catch up now.
@fr4nk1yn
True, but if HP plans on using WebOS as their device OS on everything but their computers, WebOS automatically has a built in install base. Instead of webos fighting it out with Android, iphone and wp7, Hp can deliver it to users on other device types.
I have a feeling that will be HP's strategy. They'll just put webos on all their hardware (except computers).
I can assure you that none of us took you seriously.
@summerboy18
Because Apple is the master of being the nicest, most open, non-proprietary and un-douchy company you could possibly hope to meet. amirite?
I hope this isn't like Hammer's software "update" to Tony Stark's suit.
@d0mth0ma5 Doesn't seem to be the case.
@Joules
Um, what the hell does Open have to do with anything? LOL... You guys are insane
Nice = letting the TWnese put a skin over your OS??! The f*ck?
@summerboy18 and this guys swollows!
@robdmau
LMAO I THOUGHT PALM FANBOYS WERE EXTINCT. STEP YOUR PHONE GAME UP OLD ASS PHONE AND YEA I'M YELLING
There's only a week till iPhone 4 so they better make it quick for me.
Will new devices be branded HP or Palm?
Oh yeah, they will be smartphones, but integrated with a 12 lb. printer, which will limit their portability a bit. Just a tiny bit.
Mark my words: Palm is the new Amiga. HP will rape the Palm brand until it's dead, then sell its rotting corpse to some obscure European company for some additional raping. I expect in 5 years to see some shady German company offering "WebOS phone DIY kits", providing, with some assembly required, a phone with Palm Pre performance at Vertu Constellation prices.
Wow next year. Too late for next year.

sweet...more devices so HP can have more targeted ads
You've obviously never used an HP server before.
I have 3 palm pre's that are ready for full upgrade between 11/10 and 4/11. I plan to upgrade to a new web os phone w/ 4g. They should be released sometime in November '10.
'Carnak says...'
OCTOBER
Palm screwd up big time.. The Evo shoulda been the C40 and last week most people would be using a palm phone instead of this android trash I'm returning. Andoid sucks it just has great hardware. It's either webos or iphone os everythingelse is garbage. Let me put my flame suit on..
@young hov 718 dude... don't lay the hate on my little green robot friend...
I just hope they find 2 really good people to replace the guys that left. You know the UI designer and the other guy forget what he does. That way they can be balanced again. I fear the worst if they arent at their best in terms of quality programmers and designers.
WebOS 2.0?
Please?
Can't wait for webOS 2.0 (or whatever) and a new higher performance phone. :-)
NEXT year? Not this year? Pathetic.
Maybe they're trying to use a more Applisk strategy by keeping things quiet
I'm not really excited about Palm anymore.
