Hori's PS3 MMO Controller is large and in charge
With a name like "PS3 MMO Controller" there's probably not much more that you need to know about this monstrous creation from Hori. It isn't exactly Final Fantasy themed, but seems to be targeted for those who will be chocobo breeding in XIV. Its main component is, of course, the big white keyboard, but there's also that extension on the left side, replicating the left portion of a Dual Shock and looking like something found on a Battlestar Galactica set (the original, natch). On the right side of the keyboard lies the other analog stick and full complement of buttons. We're thinking we'd rather tackle the denizens of hell for real than attempt God of War 3 with this thing, but for the massive crowd it should do quite well -- whenever it actually ships. Hori didn't have a price in mine just yet either.

White! gross!
@Brando Comment fail.
@Brando
seriously, that thing is ugly. Not sure if it's the camera or my screen, bur ut even appears to have an off white color to it.....yuck. I want to apologize to PS3 owners for this company it's so bad.
Should have bought an xbox!!!! (I'm kidding, I'm kidding, lol, put your flame torches away!!)
@Brando Some companies prioritize function over form, you fools! if you want style, go to fucking armani.com
@Ignoramus
you don't happen to drive a Subaru do you? Lol
Looks like something out of the 90's. Still, interesting design.
More like Commodore64 controller ?
Get FF XIV on PC!
"large and in charge"
That's what she said
Should have just called it Horrid controller.
if you are going to play a game with a keyboard on console why then don't you play it at you computer.... Nowadays you can get with 300£ pretty decent stuff to upgrade. Having a keyboard with a console fails the whole concept of console gaming.
Ahh remember the ps1
Looks like my girlfreind, white trash and many crevices.
very few will be playing their PS3 games at a desk. make something lap friendly!
My dad called, he wants his early 80's IBM keyboard back.
I bet this thing weighs more than a ps3.
the main reason for playing a console is playing without a keyboard, and instead with a controller, wtf is up with these guys ? people should be moving forward not backward, and OMG it looks like my first keyboard that I have ever bought, shame on you sony....
you're giving more reasons for PS3 fan boys to... err.. convert to... something else
I know I'm gonna be in oblivion, but someone needs to smack those people with a frying pan!!
@Man on earth
Sony did not make this. Read the article next time...
@Man on earth
So basically you are implying that a controller is much better for gaming than a keyboard and mouse. You have obviously not experience keyboard and mouse gaming.
With some mice from razer, logitech, microsoft etc...
Pin point precision.
Perhaps it would be wiser to note in the article that it's still a CONCEPT.
The real thing wouldn't look this ugly.
Boy that's fugly.
But honestly, if you're going to play an MMO, use your PC. I've tried those "console" mmo type games before and it's bloody horrid.
I also tried final fantasy (the mmo, when it was released for PC) on my PC and it still had the console specific UI and man, it was seriously unusable even by UI standards for that time for PC gaming.
And I know console and PC gamers like to argue about usability and control/finesse of their respective machines, but this is not something you can argue. Sorry. You can't. PC's are better for MMOs in every way imaginable.
That's really, really, terribly, extremely - you got the point - UGLY!
They did something like this for the Gamecube which looked really neat. Slimline keyboard, slapped between two halves of the GC controller. So... why couldn't they do that?
@Ritualnet
So someone beat me to Hori's GCN full-size-keyboard-in-the-middle-of-a-gamepad controller (developed for Phantasy Star Online) after all.
The key difference with this PS3 keyboard/controller, though, is that the left half is completely separate instead of attached like the right half. The GCN keyboard controller still had both halves attached-official Nintendo controller look to it all, at that. It makes me wonder why the left half is separate...Sixaxis functionality, possibly?
hello ...
i agree, this is not beautiful. but it's a choice, either you like it & use it, or you don't. people tend to complain that it's hard to play some kind of games with a classic controller, so some manufactures bring along Keyboard / mouse support & some still find it bad ... pfff this is typical human reaction.
The Hori keyboard isn't the 1st & unique solution, others exist too, i've even seen wrappers, that allow any USB keyboard to be connected via a special connector (XPS) & have controller key mapped to the keyboard ... so totally configurable.
the only problem with keyboard / mouse play is distance, when the PS3 will support Bluetooth KB/Mouse for gaming would be great.
too bad there will always be the unsatisfied ones ... or maybe some are scared that the console becomes too good for PC based game too !!!
btw i'm a PC & PS3 gamer, so feel like i have the best of both world ..
cheers!
I have only one thing to say to this.
OMGhideititshideous!
