3G video call on Fring for Android: bringing HTC EVO 4G and Dell Streak together (hands-on)
Consider this: you may have an Android phone with a front-facing camera, and so do your distant loved ones (yes, friends count too). Now slap that free IM app Fring onto your phone, and the once-dormant chat camera shall finally come to life -- right now only the Streak and EVO 4G are supported, whereas the others (like the X10) will have to rely on their main cameras. Still, Fring also supports dual-camera Symbian devices plus Skype video calls to and from computers, and since it isn't locked down to any particular connection method, users with unlimited data allowance get to make free 3G video calls! Take that, FaceTime. Read on to watch our very own transatlantic banter.
Oh sure, we shouldn't be getting all that aroused about an age-old technology, but given the massive video quality improvement -- clearer picture with more tolerable lag -- and the aforementioned affordability of mobile data, it seems like 3G video calls might be able to make a comeback. That said, with each minute of Fring video sipping up about 1MB, do watch out for your carrier's fair use policy. We're sure you kids will behave, anyway.
Special thanks to Sam Sheffer for additional work on this hands-on.

@el3ktro
Nobody uses it, not even me, even though i have a bunch of free minutes. The fact is that it's stupid to hold your phone up in front of your face, especially in public. Not even Apple or Fring can fix that, vdeo calling will be a forgotten feature in 1 year, just like what happened here.
You can do this with the Incredible today only it's awkward because the camera doesn't face forward. It's fine for conversations where the video part is only one way. Useful for "Do you think dad would like this for father's day?" video tours through the mall.
See? It doesn't have to be "magical".....just has to work.
oh come on Americans, i can't believe you're so impressed with video calling. And you even need an app to do it because the carriers are too incompetent to support the international standard version of video calling.
@GGG It's more about being able to use your free data connections (be it wifi or unlimited 3G data), so not costing your airtime.
give it a couple of months ( probally weeks ) someone will work something out on cydia that'll let us make video calls to other phone's , im jailbreaking as soon as i get mine , anyone else ??
@redrum801
...or you could just download Fring from the App store to an unjailbroken iPhone, seeing as how video calls over wifi have been supported since November last year and over 3G since February this year.
Skype will also probably support it on the iPhone but they are pretty slow at introducing new features, they only just released support for calls over 3G.
Just a question but technacally the moto "backflip" does have a FF camera so can video chat work with that?... Just a Q tho.... I have a iPhone lol
@Robby
No, but the Galaxy S which is coming out on AT&T does (and has crazy high specs to go eith it)
hey tiny evo im the DELL STREAK IM KICKING YOUR ASS
Fring dominates over FT. Shocker.
FaceTime is worthless...WFI only.
I`ll use a notebook on WIFI !
hey people out there, fring will be available also on iPhone 4 and it will works the same way.
Tested and confirmed working on rooted cliq, g1, nexus 1 and unrooted evo4g, mytouch slide, cliq, droid incredible, droid eris

People were shocked at teens/tweens sexting...
This goes to a whole new level.
Look, I really don't see why we have to compare this to the iPhone. Engagdet: "Take that, Facetime."
But seriously, For iPhone users their stuck with Facetime and if you have an Android device with a front facing camera you can enjoy Fring. I can sorta live with the Wifi only but, iPhone-to-iPhone is a killer. However hopefully the iPod touch will incorporate a front camera. I have a HTC Desire so I'm screwed! Haha.
