California considers electronic ads on license plates, we consider never moving there
Driving in California could get a little more annoying in the coming days. The Legislature of the state that brought you Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt is now considering a bill which would allow the beginning of research into electronic license plates for vehicles. The new-fangled plates would look just like regular ones when a vehicle was in motion, but would flash awesome advertisements and other messages when stopped for more than four seconds. One San Francisco based startup, Smart Plate, is already hard at work on developing just such a device, but they're not in production yet. The measure is seen largely as a money making scheme for California, which -- like nearly everywhere else in the world -- is heavily in debt after several years of hard partying and irresponsible shopping trips. Parties interested in advertising on the plates would apparently contact the California DMV directly (then wait in line for 12 to 14 hours before submitting their preliminary application for ad space). If approved, the DMV will be required to submit its research and findings to the Legislature by January of 2013. Here's to the future!

more ways to warn people of ZOMBIES AHEAD
*sigh* You make it REALLY hard to enjoy this site, I come here for good tech news and journalism, instead I get snarky 'state bashing' just what the fuck is your problem? I could come up with two DOUCHES from whatever state you're from too, doesnt' mean I'm blasting it every chance I get. Laura June, just fuck off.
@aeonjoey Lol, wow.
Try leaving and not coming back if you don't like the site. What is so hard to understand. "Dur, I hate this site because it offends me. I'll come back tomorrow and keep posting comments about how insecure I am, duuurrrr."
@aeonjoey it's just a joke. feel free to make fun of pennsylvania anytime. i won't mind, i promise. :)
@aeonjoey Saying "Please don't make endgadget like Gizmodo" might of been a better way to say that...
I am sure the state will also levy a carbon tax on each car for using extra energy to power the licence plate.
Great, yet another way for the state of California to spend more than they bring in. The problems in California (and everywhere else) isn't the lack of revenue - its the overextension of public programs that politicians love so as to buy the votes needed to get elected and re-elected. Terrible idea...
I imagine a huge backlash if this actually went through. I don't see this actually going anywhere however.
This already sounds like a bad idea... First ads, then let the hacking begin....
At the very least, it can provide some comedy... Worse thing... hack these plates so you can change the license plate at will... Imagine what you could get away with...
After pot is fully decriminalized in California, at least the ads will sometimes be funny.
It's California. They'll cash in on ANYTHING.
Wow, their state really is broke if they're resorting to that...
Ridiculous. People are already too distracted while driving. They can't even drive by an accident on the other side of the road without creating a hazard on their own side. No thank you. Next will be animated bumper stickers and personal messages instead of the finger. I see more traffic and accidents coming.
@gedster314
I hate rubbernecking so much. All of a sudden the whole highway grinds to a halt because some asshole decided to slam on the breaks to see what's going on on the other side.
I was positioning to buy a house here in the San Diego area and now I'm not. I'm going to take my buddies advice and buy some land and build a nice place for the same price.
Oh, and I won't have to deal with all the Californication that's been going on.
Oh that land and place would be Oklahoma.
