iOS 4 now available for your iPhone 3G, 3GS, newer-generation iPod touches
Right on time, Apple has unleashed iOS 4 for owners of the iPhone product codes 1,2, 2,1, and 3,1 -- in other words, the 3G, 3GS, and yet-unreleased iPhone 4. Owners of more recent iPod touches are also in luck. Interestingly, the build is 8A293 -- the exact same that was released to developers before as a GM seed -- so Apple apparently found no showstoppers pressing enough to necessitate a new build before pushing it to the public at large. It's coming up in iTunes now, so go on -- what are you waiting for?

Yeah the info is just a little lacking so far. :)
@Ops

@djt Just connect to iTunes and check for update
@Ops Cant wait to see it for the iPad
@Ops
Search for updates in itunes!
@Ops
I think I'm gonna wait a bit for a jailbreak. Unless the jailbreak methods for the betas still work then I'll be good to go.
@Ops I'm running the GM and it wouldn't give me an update.. i clicked restore, and when it started downloading ios 4 i unplugged my iphone.
@Ops
No jailbreak = No dice.
@grydlok
not if you planning on jailbreaking ;0
@Ops Server overload? lol

I have a droid but I'll be updating my dads 3GS later tonight. Can't wait to try it!
@Ops
really disappointed that they didn't feel the need to update anything...had the gm on my 3g for about 2 weeks now and there are a slew of bugs, especially with mail/gmail and calendars

@grydlok
Fuck itunes 9.2...JB FTW.
@potretr
Someone post the iPod touch 3G Download :)
@Ops - Where the hell is the Ipod touch 9th generation with A4 CHIP and stufff.....................? Thank you.
I like how they called it a multitasking user interface, as that's pretty much the whole multitasking part.. a fancy app switcher, with huge letters "Done the RIGHT way!".
@Ops
Does this mean I will get wallpapers on my iPod Touch? I bought it January 2010, that better be "newer" enough....
@Plazmic Flame
I believe the 3rd gen only applies to 32GB and 64GB ipod models,
although I could be wrong.
@Plazmic Flame depends how much you paid for it 8gb = no dice 32-64gb = party time.
@potretr I got the update at 2.5MB/s (20mbps)
hardly slow
@rob47
Are you fuckin' serious?? I have the 8GB model... holy hell!! Stevie J... your getting a email in 3... 2... 1...
@Plazmic Flame I'm no fan of the what's old is new again rebranding of the lowest tier iphone/touch. However, it's been a long while since they started that policy. Moreover, while it makes my skin crawl to be an Apple apologist it's a rather new phenomenon to allow continual updates at all and they're never guaranteed. If you wanted to protest rebranding deception you've missed that boat.
I don't doubt there is some motivation to sucker punch you and tempt an upgrade. But with the older hardware you might be hating life. I'm sure the jailbreak community will have you covered soon if you want to go ahead.
@gargle
I thought iOS 4 wasn't for the iPhone 3G. I thought it only covered the 3GS model. Weird.
"Multi-tasking done right." haha. That's the exact same way Windows phones do it. I believe that WebOS and Android do multi-tasking better. But that is just my opinion. Maybe that's why iPhone's battery life is better than Android and WebOS phones, but as far as actual multi-tasking performance, I like the other two.
@benthe1
One thing to note people
If your running a jailbroken firmware, you will not be able to restore to fresh 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 with iTunes 9.2.
You will need to downgrade iTunes to 9.1 in order to restore to fresh firmware, and then you will need to upgrade iTunes to 9.2 again to restore to iOS4
So again, Restore to fresh 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 with iTunes 9.1, then restore to iOS4 with iTunes 9.2.
Doing anything else will result in an error.
This does not apply to anyone who is not jailbroken.
Really sucks not to have the wallpaper on the home screen with the 8GB model that I bought in January 2010.. ffs... folders are welcomed though, less screens to scroll through. Doesn't look like I have orientation lock either... ugh, was so looking forward to that for reading in bed, hate when the damn screen keeps flipping.
@drh
can u please tell me how to install on my iphone since the itunes download has not been doing anything for me
@Plazmic Flame Same here dude. I have an 8GB and I'm pissed. I updated: No multitasking, no wallpaper, Pandora doesn't play in the background. I could go on but I won't. I'm am utterly upset
@rob47 dangit. i have an ipod touch 8gig that i got august last year. hopefully theyre releasing it for that soon
@Plazmic Flame
You must have bought the 8GB model which was a 3G model only. Did you not know that it was a 3G and it would obsolete at any given time?
@potretr Could you put ios4 3gs in a 3g?
@Plazmic Flame
this is the part that pisses me off. my iPod is BRAND new but because i didn't shell out an extra $100 they're slamming the door in my face
@Shlooky
3G as in 3rd gen touch. Not iPhone 3G.
all 8GB touches are second or first gen, they never got the upgrade that the 32 and 64 did
@benthe1 Uh, no. Windows phones do multitasking like Windows desktops. Multiple programs running simultaneously. Always have. That's why we have memory management issues and short battery life, but it is also why I can run Skype, Nav, e-mail, music, etc. all at the same time.
@benthe1 haha have you seen how it is done on the iPhone? its so intuitive. just how easy it is to switch at the same time everything being in the same exact spot you left off as well as it "sleeps" in the background so it doesnt drain your battery. so im not sure how that makes the other better haha. but what do i know
@benthe1 Android does multitasking in a way that DOS use to do, TSR, Terminate Stay Resident.
Let the party begin
@ssgadget
I too am waiting for the jailbreak. I need Winterboard
@grydlok
Jailbreak ftw!
I got already its sweet
292.1 Mbs of it :D
I know my comment is going to be deleted... but why not try to complete the article before posting it.
@KrazyCalvin
Because BGR and Gizmodo broke the story with full articles
@grydlok They didnt list that as the source... there was nothing in this post for the first 5 minutes it was there. I like my informations complete.
Just installed the Pandora multitask app... YAY
This isnt for the ipad yet, right?
@Hurting Now
Not until "Fall"
Devs didn't even get a preview yet.
@Hurting Now No. The OS is probably the same on both devices, but the iPad uses different layouts and graphics for the same features.
