iOS 4 now available for your iPhone 3G, 3GS, newer-generation iPod touches
Right on time, Apple has unleashed iOS 4 for owners of the iPhone product codes 1,2, 2,1, and 3,1 -- in other words, the 3G, 3GS, and yet-unreleased iPhone 4. Owners of more recent iPod touches are also in luck. Interestingly, the build is 8A293 -- the exact same that was released to developers before as a GM seed -- so Apple apparently found no showstoppers pressing enough to necessitate a new build before pushing it to the public at large. It's coming up in iTunes now, so go on -- what are you waiting for?

is it just me or is it taking ridiculously long to back up the iPhone and update?
just updated to iOS 4. now my iPhone 3G can't connect to itunes!! (error: your iphone is already activated you may disconnect this iphone now) help!
DO IT. Now. Not much different on my touch though. *sigh*
This is the buggiest upgrade EVER.
If I am typing in another window it just has a mind of it's own and switches focus from the app I'm in to iTunes and closes the backing up progress bar...
Screw this, I guess I'll live with this version on iOS until the Dell Streak is released.
I try to update my 3g and my Macbook Pro starts to die. Not a good sign... Trying to save my MBP's life. If not, I might just go back to using a stone tablet and chisel.
so i downloaded 4.0 on my iphone 3g.... and dont really see any of the new features i know i cant multi task, but should i still be able to do folders and such??? my device and itunes both say i have 4.0 on my debvice... but on my iphone i dont see any new buttons or anything??
@golfer95 Do you even know how to set up a folder?
me and my first gen iPhone are going to feel left out for the next few days until the 32gb iPhone 4 arrives in the mail. I've been using iOS 3 for the last year anyways though, so I think I'll be ok. :)
I have finally updated to 1os4. It took like 3 hours but its pretty cool with all the threaded emails. Ill have to mess with it to see whats all new on my 3g. wish i had home wallpaper and multitask thp. My 3g seems to run smoother.
If only this update included AVRCP on the Bluetooth stack. Really, Apple, is it that hard to finish this? Play/Pause work, but not Prev/Next.
i've done the update and now its taking years too boot.. what's happening?
@Ren021 Ok I just reset it and it was fine again..
I'm confused. Are people on the newer iPod touches that downloaded the new iOS4 supposed to be able to do Wallpaper (like on the iPad) and make folders? I can't seem to get mine to work. Can someone send me an email at MaliSS06@aol.com and tell me what I'm doing wrong???
Thanks!
~Niki
@MaliSS06 Gen3 models are able to do wallpapers. Gen2 and 3 can do folders.
It kept hanging at the backup portion of the upgrade, so I took everything out of my phone (apps, pics, video, music, etc...) and then reset all the settings. Upgrade went off without a hitch.
Does anyone know if you can jailbreak and unlock for T-Mobile with this new update? I have AT&T but at am getting ready to sell my 3G and it wouldnt fetch a lot of money if it werent unlocked.
My iPhone 3G has been at the "Restoring iPhone software..." stage for well over an hour now. Is that normal?
Pleasant surprise... if "Sleep iPod" is selected as the action for timer countdown, it pauses Pandora.
Nice.

THANKS JACK FOR YOUR OH SO KIND WORDS BUT I BET YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO BURN ON EVERY BIT OF NEW TECHNOLOGY WELL I HAVE NOT.GET A GRIP COMPANIES LIKE APPLE ARE PROFIT DRIVEN AND BASICALLY DONT CARE ABOUT CUSTOMERS.MAY BE I AM JUST A BIT MIFFED AT PAYING SEVERAL HUNDRED POUNDS FOR TECHNOLOGY THAT WOULD AT LEAST BE UPGRADEABLE.ALSO WOULD LIKE TO MENTION THAT IF YOU HAVE A IPOD TOUCH 1ST GEN AND YOU GET VERSION 3.1 SOFTWARE FROM APPLE WELL YOU GET ALL SORTS OF PROBLEMS THAT CANNOT BE FIXED.CONTACTING APPLE ABOUT THIS WAS A NO NO,THEY SEEMED UNINTERESTED .THEY ARE ALL ABOUT NEW CUSTOMERS AND ARE FORGETING THEIR LOYAL AND FIRST CUSTOMERS.APPLE AT THE MOMENT ARE ONLY INTERESTED IN THEIR NEW IPHONE 4 AND NEW SOFTWARE.
Wow MULTITASKING? Already? But we're still 2010? Good job Apple!
What? No 15 bucks to upgrade your software? Boy oh boy.
I'm assuming it's because of the data traffic that's why it took me 1.5 hour to update my ipod touch... but to my other device it was a walk in the park.
For those who are asking for the iOS 4 for iPad, if I'm not mistaken they (Apple) will release the iOS4 for iPad this fall.
@drh Select your device in itunes. Using a mac, hold down alt while selecting "Restore". You will then find the direct download in your files and a prompt will verfy that you are installing 4.0
I was extremely excited to install the IOS4 on my 3G. However, I'm sad that we got left out of a couple of the great advances, including the set background picture and multitasking. Hmph...
After installation of the IOS4, I've noticed that my phone is super "laggy" and the App Store crashes anytime there is more than one application being downloaded/installed at any given time.
Your iPhone is already activated. You may disconnect this iPhone now.
This is driving me mad.... Nobody any idea how to fix this ?
