New Xbox 360 has red dot of death, instead? Not quite
RRoD may be gone by omission, but that doesn't mean your new Xbox 360 won't occasionally give you the evil eye. Case in point: this 250GB unit spotted over at NeoGAF, which has a red dot smack dab in the center of the power button. What message is it trying to convey? Find out after the break.
Microsoft's leaving nothing to chance -- this Xbox 360 takes care of itself.

This is why I bought a PS3
@MEH
got any game on that Grill?
@MEH Because yellow is so much better then red?
@MEH
You picked a PS3 because it doesn't take preventative measures to protect your investment?
GOOD CALL!
@Jollybee If you are referring to it getting hot, I don't mind the heat lol, what I love is being able to leave it on for days in a row, it getting really hot, and still working just fine 3 years later.
@ThePCRehabLLC I got the original ps3, i get no yellow lol
@Jollybee
I bet he has plenty, in fact, hes probably excited about Gran Turismo 5, the worlds most advanced and realistic driving simulation game.
Thank god its only for the PS3 though eh, because then you wouldnt need 27 CDs to switch between just to play it (on the Xbox 360 that is)
Have fun getting pissed off at your shooting games, because I know thats the only thing the 360 is known for.
@cubs223425 Got a ps3 because its the most reliable system, with the most power under the hood.
@Jollybee
I bet he has plenty, in fact, hes probably excited about Gran Turismo 5, the worlds most advanced and realistic driving simulation game.
Thank god its only for the PS3 though eh, because then you wouldnt need 27 CDs to switch between just to play it (on the Xbox 360 that is)
Have fun getting extremely angry at your shooting games, because I know thats the only thing the 360 is known for.
@MEH
I bought a PS3 because I thought I wouldn't miss my 360.
I want my Halo back.
@MEH
You stated that this is why you got a PS3. This is the Xbox protecting the buyer's investment. It is Microsoft understanding a previous problem and attempting to help itself and its customers.
Also, that power is pointless if you have a weak online system and community and a console whose best talent is playing overpriced DVDs.
@uckApple
Really? Because they have one of the most successful racing franchises on the 360 as well, and it's probably right up there with Gran Turismo. It's called FORZA MOTORSPORT.
At least Microsoft doesn't have to rip off the Wii to push products.
@cubs223425 The new xbox is an over priced DVD player that auto shut downs after getting too hot cuz it cant fan out its own heat.....sad product really.
@cubs223425
Um, Gran turismo 5?
Have fun playing your tiny Forza game..
@uckApple
I don't get your response. I acknowledged Gran Turismo and said that Forza is also a successful racing franchise (hence the 4th installment being unveiled).
All you did was say (paraphrased), "Gran Turismo." What you said made no sense in terms of a rebuttal.
@MEH That's fairly narrow-minded and shallow. Next time purchase yourself a super-computer for a hundred thousand dollars. They tend to break less and are more bang for your buck. Not too many games for it though!
Just teasing, you shmoo.
@uckApple I have a xbox 360 and forza 3. At least I didn't buy a console to play a game that has no release date. i also don't buy a game preview for $60. @MEH good luck waiting for that GT5....lol
@uckApple
Oh, and the 27 CDs comment was moronic.
1. The Xbox's games aren't on CDs.
2. DVDs are less than 7 times smaller, so, congratulations on over exaggerating to try to make SONY look better.
3. From GameSpy: "Games will come on dual-layer DVD-9 discs. While the media is the same as that of the current Xbox, the usable space on each disc is up to 7 GB."
So, yeah, good call all around.
@cubs223425 yup cause they copy PS eye
@cubs223425
ya, so the ps3 is gaining motion controller support come september.
have you ever heard of something that is called EyeToy? wow it seems like microsoft is ripping off of last gen hardward that was started with the ps2. A little late-er to the game i would say
@cubs223425 DL Bluray is 50GB+, i think 7GB is wimpy there. I also paid for a product that has more openess, i can watch youtube on my ps3, as well as play great games across all genres, and also it is the same price and has FREE ONLINE. So what now. There is absolutely NO reason to buy a 360, the games cost approx the same too, but the ps3 uses Higher quality games. There is not a reason to buy a 360 other than Halo and maybe you friend has it cuase he bought it before ps3 or wii came out. That is the only reason 360 is winning the console race. I honestly can't think of one reason to own a 360, and btw i own 2 PS3s Original, and slim, as well as a 360 wich i have used before, but have not touched for over a year, my wii......well thats a wii.
@lilnate
Yeah, except the part where the Kinect has voice capabilities and can do multiple things of use. What did that EyeToy play, other than a few minigames that no one cared for? I don't recall that PoS being successful in any way.
You talk of the last-gen EyeToy? Well, guess what: it's a part of the PS Move as well, so while you call the Kinect a rip-off of old tech, you are defending SONY, who is combining ripped-off tech with old tech.
@MEH the nerve of you talking like sony has brought innovation to the gaming industry. theyre the walmart of technologies. also copied nintendo down to the controller joystick. microsoft took the opportunity to put a harddrive on xboxes while you were buying 50 dollar 24 meg memory cards. if microsoft never came out with online, harddrives on consoles, u can bet sony would still be charging you memory units for that price. sony has no innovation. it has been copying nintendo, sega, and now microsoft and IT copies to survive in this industry. and also the name brand Playstation, which is now a dying name brand. xbox is becoming a mainstream and household name. get your priorities straight and keep playing your third rate games. seriously. how can sony go from first place to third? no rly xplain yourself. Xplain yourself.
@fowenati
Yeah, Xbox LIVE costs money, but SONY is adding in their PS Plus crap, which is ALSO $50 and offers much, much, MUCH less than Xbox LIVE.
If that PSN was so special, then people would flock to it because its free. If you want to brag of a free online gaming community, go to the king: THE PC. PCs destroy the PS3 in terms of game selection, gaming community, value, and potential.
SONY also took away its open source HDD formatting, which is a big reason why some bought that console. Blu-Ray is cheaper to get for a computer. The online system on the PS3 is nothing to write home about.
The game selection on the PS3 is in no way more innovative or better than what the Xbox 360 has to offer. Both offer a couple of exclusive shooters (Halo/Gears and KZ/Resistance, which I have heard nothing of another installment...). Both have a highly successful racing franchise (MS actually has PGR as well, which is a decent game, but I think Forza will swallow its consumer base). All SONY has on the Xbox is first-party sports games that really aren't very good.
Anything the PS3 could POSSIBLY do better than the Xbox, the PC can outpace in power saver mode.
In no way can you call either system's games higher quality, as the quality of a game is completely up to personal opinion.
@MEH
Good call on the PS3.. There's so little to actually do on one that it couldn't possibly be used enough to actually overheat ;)
I kid I kid.... Own and love both. Can't wait to get the new Xbox!
@(Unverified)
I have to disagree here. The PS3 has a lot of strong points. It is not a dead system, and it never will be. Part of that is due to the Xbox brand never catching on well with the Japanese market, so they will forever go to the PS3 for shooters, most likely.
The PS3 made the right call with Blu-Ray and putting that drive in, along with a strong set of hardware. They just did too much and lost BILLIONS in the process, and scared consumers away with its price tag (especially with the Wii so cheap at launch).
Their console itself has a few new things to bring to the console game (Blu-Ray, cell processors), and the controller setup was much more original when compared to Nintendo's.
However, it has copied a lot, but that in no way means it is a dying brand.
@(Unverified) Lets see, we had Online in the PS2 as well smart one.
Sony started Blu Ray
Sony Made the Camera idea first (PS EYE) leading to the Wii and xBox Kinectic (or whatever)
We have the closest thing to an OS on our system
Sony has the highest tech hardware, "who cares if we werent first, we are the best."
Want to go farther than games? Lets see, TV, walkman, CD -players, radios, speakers, headphones, batterys, cameras, then they got the Media, Sony Pictures and their studios, and they had an influence on pretty much every electronic EVER
@MEH
Wow. I thought Apple fanboys were annoying. Seems we've discovered a PS3 fanboy.
Fight, item, or run?
Fight!
I have a Wii. I play it from time to time when I feel like it. It's a fun little device, not powerful in the least, but I enjoy it.
For my serious gaming, I turn to a device that is upgradable, cheap, fast, and fully-featured. My gaming PC.
I'm not hating on any console (heck, I'm trying to find the funds for that smexy new Xbox and the PS3 is just about the best Blu-ray player in existance). I'm just putting you in your place. STFU fanboy, while the rest of us talk like grown-ups.
Back on track: Good on Microsoft for putting in a failsafe. Certainly takes the guesswork out of taking care of the console.
@cubs223425 id love to see a pc match my ps3s ability to play games in 3D at 1080P (i played today at the sony store in my mall, and its fucking awesome) at a price the ps3 is. People ARE flocking to PSN because it is free and the plus service is NOT REQUIRED, and honestly what do u do with live? play games and thats it, as well as messege, and the basic psn does that so what gives? xbox costs more. What makes live so special? Blu ray for a computer is at least 100$ plus the comp and a gfx card that can handle it so ur wrong there. The Picture quality and grpahics on a PS3 are MUCH better than a 360 hooked up to a HDTV (even my lil cousin whois a 360 fan said holyshiiit, then said hell no when he found out its a ps3.) PS3 AND 360 have good sports games, and in terms of games Halo is old now, and needs a rehaul and MW2 the main game now is on both and it has slightly better gfx on ps3. It all comes down to this.
BluRay > DVD
Free Online > Not free
Flash Browser > nothing
3D > 2D
Very Good Graphice (PS) > pretty good Graphics (360)
Online Experience depends on the users opinion, i never used netflix and dont plan on it, and all these subscription services i dont care for.
Ps3 is much more stable and has much more support for things
@MEH Same here I have 2 ps3 fats and a slim no problems with any of them
and I got one fat at launch day
@cubs223425 no, microsoft instead rips off sony's products to push their own (read: kinect=eyetoy)
@cubs223425 "At least Microsoft doesn't have to rip off the Wii to push products."
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/splash/k/kinectsports/default.htm
to everyone who has chosen to put the words 'copy' or 'rip off' in their comment..
innovation ≠ imitation
innovation is what makes things successful:
executing an idea more swimmingly than somebody else might have.
success > originality
sony did the eyetoy way back. nintendo is doing their motion controller thingy. microsoft is doing the kinect. sony is doing the motion control thingy. it's a big cycle. competition. options for consumers!
i wish people would stop arguing and defending the consoles or products they own.
if you loved it so much, why aren't you on it playing a game?
done playing? draw a portrait of the console and hang it on your door.
can't draw? write a free-verse poem about it.
take it for a walk.
polish it.
personally, my ps3 and dsi are going to bed with me tonight. :3
... but can it play Crysis 2 without shutting down just before a save point?
@uckApple You realise your name spells auckApple, which doesn't really make a lot of sense?
If you'd used the name pplesucks then it works because everybody quoting you would write @pplesucks, which I think is the effect you want to achieve.
@fowenati Ok, you win the award for ignorance, I swear these Sony guys are drinking the Apple water. Get off your high horse, and since you think everyone copies Sony, and that Sony is so original, I will demonstrate beyond a doubt that Sony is not original by your own terms, and I will even use the same examples that you gave. Also just in hopes that next time you will research before being an ignorant fanboy, I will show how Sony copies other companies. I dare you to respond with a factual or educated reply. You should feel really lucky, I don't usually post to people with adolescent intelligence levels.
First wrong statement you made "Lets see, we had Online in the PS2 as well smart one."
Well than must be the Sony PS2 copied the Sega Dreamcast, considering it was even in the same generation of console as the PS2 but yet EARLIER! And I am not even going to go into detail about the third party modems that were available for the Sega Genesis and SNES (for example XBAND).
Second comment "Sony started Blu Ray"
Sony did not start blue-ray alone, it was actually a joint effort betweeen Sony and their old rival Phillips, along with other financial backers. Using your opinion that Sony does everything original than I guess you would hate to know that Sony was developing Blue-ray with Phillips from the invention of the practical blue laser diode that had just been invented by Shuji Nakamura, yah Sony is totally original right? Also remember aside of blue-ray, Sony also gave us Betamax.
Your third comment is just obscenely ignorant "Sony Made the Camera idea first (PS EYE) leading to the Wii and xBox Kinectic (or whatever)" First off you really didn't think that Sony's Playstation move wasn't ripped right off of Nintendo's Wii console? Secondly, webcams have been used in the same way for years prior to the eyetoy, I guess if I was as desperate as you to prove a point then I could also bring up the Gameboy Camera!
Your fourth comment "We have the closest thing to an OS on our system"
Must be Sony is at the copy cat game again and not being original (shame on them), the Dreamcast ran off of Windows CE OS.
Your fifth comment "Sony has the highest tech hardware"
Since when does that matter to Sony, or even the console race. Throughout all other console generations Sony was the least powerful console (PS1, PS2) but yet won the race. Very rarely does the most powerful console win the race (one exception was the SNES beating the Genesis) but usually the console thats first to market wins the race do to their larger game library and support from programmers that have already learned to develop for the system.
"Want to go farther than games?"
Sure we will, the TV was not even close to being invented by Sony, I'm not even sure Sony was around during the invention of TV, does that make Sony a copycat? The walkman was not the first portable cassette player, the first one was Stereobelt invented in 1972. The Compact Disc was also a joint venture between Phillips and Sony.
I'm not even going further into the things you listed as every single one is wrong, but its really funny when you state "they had an influence on pretty much every electronic EVER" when actually every electronic ever has had an influence on Sony!
Now that we got your lies out of the way, let me show you some designs that Sony has copied.
The digital pad was introduced by Nintendo on the original NES
The analog controls were reintroduced and made successful by Nintendo with the N64. The PS1 was already out at that time so Sony rushed to put analog on their controller because Nintendo did it, thats where we got the Dual-Shock from, so Sony, thank Nintendo.
Oh wait, another Nintendo invention Sony was first to copy.... the rumblepack! Along with knocking off the analog, Sony also introduced vibration into their controllers much after Nintendo had.
Speaking of Sony robbing Nintendo, the whole design of the controller for the Playstation is just a SNES controller with 2 extra shoulder buttons and handles added, Sony copied the shoulder buttons from Nintendo, and the 4 button layout was exactly the same as the SNES, so after all these examples, basically Sony has never made an original controller!
I'm not gonna keep going, this could take way to much of my time, anyways the point is being a fanboy is fine, but just don't be ignorant! My console of choice..... I'm not a console gamer, I'm a PC gamer, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for SNES and NES!!!!!!
@MEH
You guys are all stupid, it is ridiculous to say that either the PS3 or the Xbox is killing off the other. The graphics you get for games released on both platforms are almost identical and the only determining factor should be what your friends are all playing on.
@uckApple Lol!
@Unverified User
sure is troll in here
@cubs223425
It seems to me that designing a feature that detects overheating is to accept that the issue always existed and is a considerable one at that. And if history has anything to show, the comparative failure rates of each system is drastically different. I say that it's better to design and build a machine that doesn't have that problem so that such a feature is not necessary. Enter PS3 slim. While failure rates are expected, I haven't seen any recorded incidences of them doing so due to overheating. If there are, they are few and far between and I have yet to find the Engadget article that says otherwise.
@MEH Ahhhhh nerd rage. What would the internet be without it....Oh that's right...perfect.
@nanascho yeah lets give the ps3 slim a bit. remember when the phat ps3 came out? it was all good then a year later ylod started to happen, then it hapend more and more.the 360 is a piece if electronics, so itrs gona have problems. put atleats with the 360 Microsoft used to send u a box fix it and send it back for free. Did sony do that? nope. And now that sony removed otherOS i have no reason to turn it on cept to play grand terismo 5 when it comes out and a ps2 games.
@MEH yeah you get the YLOD which sony charges 150 to fix.. been their didn't do that
@uckApple That made absolutely no sense 27 discs? Why would you need multiple discs?
@That guy 2
I still think RROD sounds cooler than RDOD! :(
@ThePCRehabLLC Because it's failure rate isn't setting new records?
@cubs223425
Not to hate, but you can't seriously call buying a game console an investment :p
@nanascho:
Did you know that iPhone contains such feature. If the device is too hot, you can't use it and it tells you this. It's been there since the beginning. It seems to me that such a feature is a good idea. Why would you want to continue using a device that is overheating when the device could simply tell you it's too hot and needs time to cool?
Is it a design flaw? Depends how you look at it. They could have used liquid cooling in the 360 and we wouldn't have any issue...but how much would that have cost?
I'd much rather have a feature built into the system to prevent damage being caused due to overheating. In fact, I wish ALL my electronics came with such feature, as a safety precaution. It just makes sense.
@tklr08 same here :-(
@fowenati
Wow, even your 'lil cousin' was surprised? That really says something. He's probably what, 13 or so. Good point.
Live is an enormous online community, that PSN simply could not ever catch up to, and if you think they can that's VERY optimistic of you. There's no denying that MW2 is huge on every platfor, but come on, it was basically made for Xbox Live. (not really of course, I know how many people on here take every word too seriously)
The reason that Live costs money and is better than PSN is because PSN is a mash up of different servers usually hosted by the games themselves. For example the first time I played an EA game online with my PS3 I needed to sign up for an EA account. Live uses Xbox's servers to host the games, so you get a much richer and unified experience. Sending messages, chatting, inviting friends to your game, it's all the same no matter what you and your friend are doing, streamlined and unified. You're paying for Microsoft's/Xbox's servers. I used to hate trying to invite friends into my game with my PS3. I always said, as did my friends, if PSN was half as good as Live we'd pay for it. Now we can... and if we're lucky, it'll be half as good.
That's why on Live you've been able to voice chat with a friend while playing two separate games, as well as other similar things that the PS3 cannot or could not do until recently. And I'm glad to see them slowly offering their customers those options. Just about anything you need to do on a 360 you can do while in a game. When I got rid of my PS3 (because I never used it) you had to exit the game to access your Homescreen. At least they got that working the way it should.
I will say I REALLY wish the 360's dashboard was as fast as the PS3's. Sometimes it feels like you're waiting forever for your friends list to open. It's gotten a little bloated. Even after this long, I much prefer the old dashboard to the NXE. PS3's Homescreen is perfectly minimalist, as it runs as smooth as a dream.
Ps, Don't forget about Inside Xbox, Insider Moves, IGN Strategize, GwF (I watched a relative of mine play MW2 with Ozzy a couple weeks ago) Gamer Spotlight, and the rest of the community that proves you get what you pay for.
@MEH Finally - Microsoft has publicly admitted to the reliability of their console. Notice they didn't fix it, but gave it an auto shutdown because it was cheaper to do that than solve the array of problems.
