Nintendo 3DS will launch 'in all major markets' by March 2011, design still being tweaked
When Nintendo of Japan first announced the 3DS (think: way back in March), it promised a release of the portable by the fiscal year ending March 2011. Given the DS and DSi's six-month global rollout window, however, we weren't sure if that applied to the world or just the company's backyard -- sure, we've heard rumors of a UK release in October, but nothing's been confirmed. Cue Nintendo of America's president Reggie Fils-Aime to give a definitive answer: "The one thing, for sure, is that we will launch in all of our major markets by March 31, 2011." Well, that about settles it in our mind. Fils-Aime also clarifies that what we saw on the floor is not the final design -- something that was mentioned during the press conference -- but we wouldn't expect anything more than slightly altered button placement (for its part, the official site lists "look," battery, pre-installed software, and supported languages as TBA). But hey, if you want to believe a third screen is possible, don't let us stop you from dreaming.

:(
@himynameisnathan
the design does need to be tweeked a little. the power button is gonna get hit a lot by large hands and the headphone jack in the center doesn't look like a great idea. but it does look pretty awesome especially in that red. and if can REALLY render that video of that ninja thing. i'll definatly wait.
@Stupidity Hazard The power button is only an issue if it is sensitive and registers a press for a quick press as opposed to needing to be held down for say a second or two. Nintendo aren't idiots and I'm sure they aren't going to put an overly sensitive power button in a prominent place.
Bloody hell! So you say this white hose connects to the keg?
Yes Mr. Reid, we call it force beerback.
@himynameisnathan: can't get over Paul's face. And the glasses. that picture was the best part of E3.
So Reggie pretty much re-stated what was already known (by March 2011). What is different?
Does it come with a hot chick chained like Paul Millers?
:(
@himynameisnathan. Perhaps you think you're being treated unfairly
Damn, two sad faces.
You must be really upset.
@Nintendo Tim He wants the bottom screen to be the same size of the top screen. At least I do. :(
@Tuan X
I do too >.< Just looks... Wrong.
But I think I'll still be buying one; PSP graphics in 3D? Count me in.
@Lord Vader
I am perfectly happy as I bought a new dsi off of the Rebel Underground Market (some call it craigslist...) for $130 w/o tax. Perfect time and price! :D
Still no price.
@HektikLyfe I imagine the final specs, form factor and price will be announced at TGS this September. Long wait.

@Zeroexe43. NOOOOOOOOO. My Roar of Pain and Loss has been turned into an Internet meme. NOOOOOOO
@Zeroexe43
ahem, once in a day is quite enough :) besides, this isn't a dire situation
@cwalters74
Yeah i am aware of that, but i feel like it fits many situations, and this was the worst gadget news ive heard in a long time
HA ! i KNEW IT NOT THIS YEAR, I WIN!yes all caps is necessary nobody believed me and im right
@Aceyriot
By march is not necessarily in march. So hopefully you lose, this would kill at the holidays, not so much after everyone has already received their kinect/move/vintage action man.
@wolfticket II Agreed. The holidays is when we will see it. They will probably announce a price point and release dates(s) at that conference Nintendo has in October every year.
@bob1000
Yes, hopefully along with new super mario bros wii 2. Coop in my house is dull in the wake of completing the original for the 3rd time :'(

lol @ dude in the pic
@infamous1 You do know you're referring to Paul Miller as "dude in the pic"?
@infamous1 How could you have missed this picture? For some reason lying outside the realm of good taste this pic is now a staple of Engadget
@Leobons
Why is the dude wearing glasses inside?
lol @ the guy in the pic!
"zomg.. so many dimensions!!!"
Have they announced if it will play DS games? I recently got a DSi and not having the option to use the very few games i have would make me not even bother.
I only got the DSi for Dragon Quest 4 because it's nostalgic and I had it on Nintendo when I was little and loved it. But after getting a DS and a Wii, I highly doubt i'll bother with Nintendo anymore, just not my type of games anymore. And I've become a trophy/achievement junkie...not having that stuff on a brand new console seems like a huge mistake to me. It's stupid but makes playing games a lot more fun and rewarding.
@acidsamuraix They do play DS and DSi games.
@acidsamuraix You might be SOL regarding downloaded games. So far they don't transfer to new systems.
I love that you keep using that image of Paul Miller (PDE), Engadget. Please keep it up, because it's hilarious.
@Dignan17 ... and misleading.
@TareG
Only if you are a stupid troll that hasn't read any articles about this device.
If they're competion is the iPod touch then they best get it out by September. Or steal the mind share right before the CHRISTmas( or other gift giving holidays) shopping season starts.
Posted this on GFAQs, but I'll post my speculation here too:
I'll bet that it is going to come before November 26th, because they will want to take advantage of the Black Friday sales. The month of July is out quite thoroughly because of the fact that a definite date would have been announced if that were the case so they could capitalize on sales at that time. They are likely to use a month that will capitalize on strong sales, which really eliminates August too, making likelihood of October to November (when the rush is more thoroughly going to pick up so they can have a strong launch month in their financial reports.
So we are left with
October-November 25th.
I'd eliminate November 25th due to Thanksgiving and we have
October - November 24th.
Using past console release dates as a guide to further narrow that down,
Nintendo Wii launched on November 19th, 2006 which was a Sunday.
Nintendo Gamecube launched on November 18th, 2001 which was a Sunday.
Nintendo DS launched on November 21st, 2004 which was a Sunday.
Eliminating it down to Sundays (and Wednesdays, which are a popular disc-based game release day) we come up with these dates:
October 3,6,10,13,17,20,24,27,31
November 3,7,10,14,17,21,24
From there, we will apply the fact that systems tend to be launched in mid to late November to narrow the dates further.
November 14, 17, 21, 24
November 14th and 21st are Sundays, with November 17th and 24th being Wednesdays. Not only is November 21st on the week of Black Friday (huge sales boom!), but it is the 6th anniversary of the DS, so that is what I'd bet on the release date being.
@Elaith
You could saved yourself from all this jibber jabber and read the article. Cuz it says...
- Cue Nintendo of America's president Reggie Fils-Aime to give a definitive answer: "The one thing, for sure, is that we will launch in all of our major markets by March 31, 2011."
@Stupidity Hazard I did read that, and it is still a "By this date" rather than "On this date",
@Elaith
Good work sheriff
@Stupidity Hazard His response is much different from what you said. He thinks it would launch this year and if so it would be those given dates.
@Elaith
I'm pretty sure 'by March 2011' does not mean November 2010, no matter what way you slice it
@Elaith
Except you can't launch a console without games. Now, I don't know how long the 3DS SDK has been in developers hands, but when you rush games before they are finished, that's when you get a launch like the original Nintendo DS where there was maybe 1 game worth owning and everything else was a collection of minigames.
Besides, I forsee Nintendo wanting to have 1 last year of major DS game sells before relegating it to 2nd place in their handheld lineup. Remember that while the GBA sold for quite a while after the DS was released, it was never the same in Nintendo's eyes after the DS' first Christmas.
@Elaith Whether or not you're right, you get +1 for being thorough.
@Jeff Kibuule
It will still play DS games.
Nintendo seemed to already be along on a couple of games, I'd bet they could have at least three ready by Christmas, which is the most people would buy at launch. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bundle with one or two 3d movies as well, probably Pixar movies or something.
I expect the 3DS in Japan and US by end of November, then launching in Europe and elsewhere early 2011.
@suicidebob
They add the qualifier 'In all major markets', which implies that some markets will get it earlier.
I DIDN'T THINK YOU NEEDED THE SPECIAL 3D GLASSES LIKE THE DUDE IN PIC.
CAPS LOCK FOR RESPECT TO THE VIRTUAL BOY.
@Shatter
Those are sunglasses.
@Zomic13
REALLY? R U SURE?
@Shatter
Yes, he's trying to see the light that shines before his eyes.
