Nintendo 3DS will launch 'in all major markets' by March 2011, design still being tweaked
When Nintendo of Japan first announced the 3DS (think: way back in March), it promised a release of the portable by the fiscal year ending March 2011. Given the DS and DSi's six-month global rollout window, however, we weren't sure if that applied to the world or just the company's backyard -- sure, we've heard rumors of a UK release in October, but nothing's been confirmed. Cue Nintendo of America's president Reggie Fils-Aime to give a definitive answer: "The one thing, for sure, is that we will launch in all of our major markets by March 31, 2011." Well, that about settles it in our mind. Fils-Aime also clarifies that what we saw on the floor is not the final design -- something that was mentioned during the press conference -- but we wouldn't expect anything more than slightly altered button placement (for its part, the official site lists "look," battery, pre-installed software, and supported languages as TBA). But hey, if you want to believe a third screen is possible, don't let us stop you from dreaming.

@Soletaken
THE FUTURE OF NINTENDO IS TOO BRIGHT!!!!!
Hoping to see Twitter and Facebook support here, and maybe some support for sites to upload. Picasa or flickr? This would make the ds my device to have again!
The top screen looks wrong, It would be nice if they make both screens same size.
So it could as well be next week for some markets. By march isn't in march. Hey a Guy can dream, can he :)
WHAT?!?!!??!?!?!
In 1 year???? That's way, way, way too late. I was expecting Holiday season 2010, worst case scenario.
The delay will only be warranted if...
1) The parallax barrier screen is replaced with lenticular lens screen (120 degree viewable 3D)
2) We get a second analogue nub. With 3D on board, FPS games will be incredible... if we have a second nub.
@TareG You can use the touchscreen instead of analog stick, like in Metroid and COD for DS.
@Cheesus Crust But the touchscreen is not a proper alternative to an analog-nub.
@Khalid Shahin
Actually guys, the idea (as said by Nintendo reps) was that for FPS games, the gyroscope will kick in... movement will be magnified in game of course, so you don't have to turn 180 degrees to look behind you.
But then again, just add a second nub and make our lives easier.
@TareG
God I hate those gyroscope games. It's not big or clever. At least they are thinking slightly more creatively and not just remaking another 80's marble sim, because we just dont have enough of them. We Love marbles! Yahooooo. The new Fucking yoyo apparently. And monkey ball, sod off mate, just sod off.
@Khalid Shahin a handheld is not a proper solution to a home console...we can't expect typical fps games, especially with a company like nintendo, who is clearly trying to do things differently
@satbir
Except that Nintendo made one of the best FPS games on the DS...
Who wants to place a bet that Sony magically announces the true successor to the psp by march 2011. I'd put all my future life earnings on it
If everyone remembers correctly they massively changed the DS design from E3 to launch.
Didn't they announce a bit early then?
Damn right they need to change the design. It's much too good looking for a first-release Nintendo handheld. They'll have to ugly it up so they can sell us a sexy one in 2013.
Translation: In Japan by Christmas, In US and Europe by March.
@d3sc3nd3ncy +
@d3sc3nd3ncy
They didn't do that for the Wii or DS, so why would they do that for the 3DS?
Sounds like they're doing a Q1 US release like I expected. Can't blame them. The DS still sells like hot cakes here, but it's pretty much dead in Japan in favor of the PSP. I figure we'll see a late Q4 Japan release because of that.
Design still being tweaked?
Don't make it TOO nice Nintendo, save some frivolous yet oh so desirable cosmetic changes for the 3DS lite.
BREAKING NEWS!!!
Inspired by Sony, Nintendo will be redesigning the 3DS to look more like the Hitachi Magic Wand massager.
Here's a scary thought: those aren't 3DS glasses. They're just glasses that FuturePaul wears all the time. Which is unfortunate. :S
I find the headphone jack placement in the middle problematic. I wonder why they decided to change it for the show, and I really hope it goes back to about where it was in the final design.
@Gamoe2
I've heard a few people say that, but I don't understand why. Could you explain?
@Zomic13 If the audio jack is somewhere on the side it's effectively out of the way. You can even put it in your pocket that way if you wanted to. But on the front the audio plug just comes out at you. If you're playing in bed or on a sofa lying down it could literally come between you and the device.
It's clunky and impractical in some situations and on top of that I find it aesthetically displeasing.
They need to make it left hand friendly. Dual analog sliders please.
Cool. I'll be getting a Nintendo every year since 2009.
