Samsung Acclaim arrives in US Cellular stores July 9, we're sure somebody will care
Looks like we have a small band of US Cellular fans among our numbers, as we've received a slew of tips letting us know that the national carrier has dropped an official release date for the Samsung Acclaim. This most mundane of Android sliders will arrive on July 9, and... well, that's it really. US Cellular hasn't seen fit to entice us with any actual specs or even an Android version, though information floating about the interwebs suggests it has a 3.2-inch HVGA screen and a stock Eclair installation. We'll just have to wait until somebody at Samsung swallows the shame of being associated with the Acclaim and finally gives us some official details.

awww the moment in US cellular hands now
The Windows 3.11-esque wallpaper really does wonders for the interface.
I'm a huge fan of paying more per month, higher cost for replacement phones, dealing with roaming pretty much and having weakest phone lineup this side of Cricket. Who wouldn't be excited about this release?
What engadget forgets is that some people are gonna stay with their carrier regardless... I have a buddy at work that has been insisting for months that "US Cellular is getting a droid" (ignoring that DROID is a moniker Verizon uses) he refuses to go to any other carrier, this will blow him out of the water compared to their current crap lineup.
In response to the latter part of your title: not me. Anyone else?
I noticed the front page of the U.S. Cellular site shows a promo for Android and links to this page: http://www.uscellular.com/android
Well, the good thing about this phone is that its running stock android instead of a skinned update-delaying version of it.
@jayy337 yeah all it has delaying updates is the inept Samsung
(Depressive sigh) why god why
somebody will care... anybody? hello? anybody cares? hello? please! take it for free... heeellloooo?
(dead silence)
This would be a quite significant Android releases if it simply supported end user OS upgrades.
It looks like a Samsung Seek running Android....
Nice job carrier fanboys--now I've seen it all. Because why care about little companies when we can all keep handing fistfuls of dollars to Verizon and AT&T yeah?
This phone looks like garbage, but US Cellular has announced two upcoming android phones, and it's rumored that the second will be the HTC Desire--an old news phone I guess, but I'm excited for it.
Looks like a nice phone, but seems like a little to late for the carrier...
Under spec'd or not, it still has a much better physical keyboard than the iPhone 4 does. :)
US Cellular unfortunately is probably the top carrier in my area. I have a Droid on Verizon, but all my company's work phones are USCell BBs.
For the past month, when I go into the US Cell store for my work phones, I always ask about Android phones and they keep telling me that they are getting the Droid in July. They may not know the difference between the Motorola Droid and a regular Android device(Like normal people), but she kept insisting it was the "Droid" by Motorola.
If its true, USC will finally get a decent phone. Not that I care at all.
@sethmo
Besides the Desire and Acclaim, the third phone is very heavily rumored to be the Milestone, which is the equivalent to the Droid.
@Sponge
The Milestone isn't exactly like the Droid, though it is very close it has a few important differences, one being it's GSM radio, secondly and sadly is it has a signed bootloader which means no direct flashing of custom roms that is popular with the Droid.
ME ME ME except I already knew that... My dad works there... were getting the HTC Desire to! Now that phone is awesome
I appreciate the coverage of my carrier, but the sarcasm? Not so much.
@Atheros
Hey, apparently they have better Android options than AT&T right now.
I'm stuck with US Cell for now via work because of their amazing coverage. Been very happy with my Tour but the loud and consistent drum beat of Android can't be ignored.
With that said, this phone looks like junk, the Desire on the other hand is looking very nice. Of course because its USCC it will likely take several more months before I can have one in my hands :(
They have a contest to win some of them for free at http://www.textrules.com/acclaim/
They list some of the specs as:
* Android 2.1 Éclair
* 3MP Camera
* 800 MHz Processor
* 3.2" HVGA TFT Capacitive Touch Screen
* Stereo Bluetooth
* Wi-Fi
If it wasn't an HVGA screen then people wouldn't be saying what a low end phone it is, 800MHz should make for quite a snappy Android experience.
And as other people have mentioned they are also getting the HTC Desire in August, which will satiate the people who need a superphone.
Here's the thing with US Cellular (their HQ is across town). Yes, they have crap for phone selection. Yes, they have crap for coverage across the nation. However... Because they are a marginal player they spend a lot of their money on customer service. They have THE best customer service of any carrier, hands-down. Their rates are competitive as well, and if you don't leave town a lot and your town is covered they are a pretty good deal.
Some people ride bikes, some people drive Hummers and some people walk everywhere. Diff'rent strokes.
This is what is going to make iOS devices win -lackluster, boring hardware that feels like generic oatmeal.
Pretty much the same boring fat ugly phone as the Sprint Samsung Moment
Demand will exceed supply.
Just excited and waiting for july 9th when i touch this new piece.
Anyone think verizon users will be able to pick this up on ebay and activate it without any data plan at all????
If that's gonna be possible, Im gonna pick this up. Better than paying $30/month for something i'll never use.
This looks just like the Moto Cliq.. And I already have a Cliq..
Thanks Samsung but no thanks.
I'm SO excited!!! I wish I could say in what way I'm excited, but this isn't Gizmodo.
I got one for my wife, and it is a sweet little phone. Has a real wallpaper (photo) not the lame pic shown. good horizontal slideout. Android not as easy to use as my Palm Pre, but faster to launch. Great screen, decent camera. Has good phone function/sound/reception. Whether or not it is a powerhouse running games I don't know, but could care less if it runs useful apps decently, which it does.
So for people who don't live for their phones, I think it's a nice little smartphone. And beats carrying around a brick like the EVO 4g or Droid X.
