SlingPlayer Mobile for Android ready to entertain you for $30 starting tomorrow
After a public beta spanning a couple months, Sling is rolling out the latest piece of its expanding SlingPlayer Mobile portfolio this week -- this time for Android, plugging the biggest coverage gap it currently has. This is the same app we recently had an opportunity to check out, but since that preview, we're happy to report that it's been massaged into a more stable, more usable setup -- gone are the disconnect crashes we'd had before. Furthermore, Sling claims they've specifically worked to improve load and response times with this version, and we have to say that the effort is noticeable -- this definitely feels like the fastest SlingPlayer Mobile we've used to date. It's officially available starting tomorrow from the Market in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the US for $29.99. Follow the break for the full press release.

@JonnyB Oh crap, I'm headed to Fry's right now to buy my slingbox!! I had the original one before & absolutely loved it, so I have no problem dropping the money down for this!!
@JonnyB
using this on Att (iPhone) is murder
fyi.. its up on Android Market right now. Definitely the BEST version of SlingPlayer mobile... and yes, I have all of them. Cant find the favorites channels shortcuts though.
@HerbieDerb
Sold out?
Tell me numbers, real numbers.
(Im not an iCrap fanboy)
@JAG Go do your own research
Is the price by the month or just one time?
@2FR35H Once
@2FR35H are you sure? is it on the press release? that would make it really cool
@TikiTeko
Android market doesn't have subscription based apps as far as I know. It's a one time deal.
So, wait: Upwards of $100+ for the box and then another $30 for a damn piece of software to utilize it?
No thanks.
@dragonfli I don't have slingbox or the app, but it's because it's a very advanced app, lots of time and effort to develop, plus amazing features
Fourth!
"this definitely feels like the fastest SlingPlayer Mobile we've used to date"
this really isn't saying much, it's still a shitsandwich, but better than the other shitsandwiches, I'll wait thanks
LOL! for that price and the new onset of pay for data, not a chance ill ever consider getting this.
Whoa a $30 app? No thanks.
@Fr3sh2De4th
Well, it IS android....
@plyx
What??? What the hell is that suppose to mean? The app costs just as much for the iPhone.
is there any trial or try before you buy kinda thing? No way I'm going to drop $30 for an app I can't even try out first.
@jbeck22
I think the Android Market has a 24 hour return policy, I don't know how it works thought never had to use it.
@jbeck22
With Android you can usually get a refund within 7 days if you don't like the app.
@jbeck22 with android for the first 24-hours after the initial app purchase, you can go back to the marketplace and do the usual uninstall method except it will say refund.
However, if you purchase, refund and then subsequently purchase the same app again... You won't be able to refund a second time.
What bothers me is that I already paid for the app twice before, once with the palm application back in the treo 755p days and then the windows mobile app. Not paying Sling Media any more money.
The app should be ten bucks. Then you got to worry about the data plan that u don't go over.
@anotherworld
Not if you have the Sprint data buffet. I'm so getting this for my EVO! :)
@REP but on Sprint you already have Sprint TV, which is decent enough and included on the plan
@TikiTeko
Sprint TV is nice, but it's not cable.
@SCB And it's definitely not my TiVo either! Slingbox + Tivo + StreamBaby + Slingplayer + Evo FTMFW!
Is there ANY plan for people that have previously paid?
Too expensive :S I am already being milked by my wireless plan, imagine adding $30 more :S should not it be free if I have a slingbox at home and connect to it?
@TikiTeko
And it's Slingbox's problem that you pay for your mobile data plan why exactly??? Do you just write the first random thought that comes along???
@TikiTeko
I hope you aren't thinking it's $30 a month?? It's a one time fee.
It is still too expensive though, but I don't blame them since they don't really make money after the initial sale... should be MAX $19.99 or less IMO.
I paid the same amount of money for this app back when it was on my Palm Treo 700w (Windows Mobile) phone.
I would gladly pay the $30 again if they would port it to WebOS. Sprint still has unlimited data plans and I travel a lot. Would be great to have this for my Palm Pre.
@rlopin I sure hope we don't have to repurchase a license if we already bought for another system. I've also got screwed and charged $30 for support...TWICE!!!
You know you used to have to pay 60 bucks for pc software like this. You people are cheap
@forzanerazzurri2
You should see the Android Market comments people complaining about ads in free apps and about paying $.99 cents for apps.
@forzanerazzurri2
People are so cheap.
Since there is no monthly service fee, a one time $30 charge is well warranted. A free trial would be nice, though. They'll probably give one.
@forzanerazzurri2 - The PC and Mac software is free with the box - so I don't get why they need to charge $30 for the mobile versions.
@forzanerazzurri2 Are you sure about that? It's a pretty unusual model to sell someone hardware, then to charge them an additional fee for the software. It's like if you bought an iPod then they charged you for iTunes.
@uninspired
He means purchasing the apps for the phone. Like purchasing additional software for a computer.
Seriously, read some of the reviews on the iTunes store. People complaining that upgrading to a ad-free version of an app is too expensive at 99 cents...
I like free stuff too, but I also like supporting indie developers who make apps I frequently use...
@SCB Yeah, they probably will.
/s
@forzanerazzurri2
I agree with you to some extent. But having to purchase the software once again, after I've purchased for Palm OS and Windows Mobile it's not right. They need to have a way to download for cross platform.
180.00-220.00 for the box and 30.00 for the App? I'll wait for a Netflix app or buy a tuner card and run Orb. Just Saying.......
@Tekka Orb isnt free either and isnt great on android in my opinion. But hey to each his own.
Why so much for this app anways. I would pay 5 bucks for it, not 30!
Im impress with android only wondering if $30 monthly or just $30 only one time pay?
@remytech one time fee
@twelvetribes230 thanks then thats more positive for slingplayer
