Android + Asteroids + multiplayer = Androideroids (video)
iPad Scrabble playable on your iPhone? Pretty neat. Desktop Asteroids playable on your Android smartphone? Rather more action-packed -- and a little less expensive to get into. Androideroids is a project of Grant Skinner and runs on Adobe's Air platform. It's an eight-player game hosted on a desktop, with each participant given a first-person smartphone view of the vast expanses of space and the hollow rocks scattered throughout it. Meanwhile, a desktop client displays an overhead perspective of the shenanigans, displaying everyone's life and score. Players can either shoot asteroids or each other, tapping on the screen to thrust and fire while tilting to turn. Honestly the move to first-person doesn't seem to have done anything to improve gameplay, but this is still one game of Asteroids we'd make room for in our games folder.

Androideroids.... Hmm... Sounds sexy!
@Rick Astley I just realized I have that same damn entertainment center as this guy. Ikea FTW.

@mbg19
What about Homer + Android?
@grandmainger
I have some Preparation Homer for that
garbage!! Wouldn't touch a game of mediocre quality such as this!!
@hell hound
Don't feed the troll.
@BigJayDogg3
The poor thing is so starved for attention though. Surely a few crumbs couldn't hurt?
@NeoJew
That's what Hansel and Gretal thought.
pretty awesome spin on an old classic.
But then all games for android are garbage and nowhere near the quality of games on iphone
Give me this and Angry Birds on my EVO and I will never be bored.
@man
Angry Birds is coming.
android.angrybirds.com
@man
I beat angry birds after 2 days...it's lame...
This looks way cooler.
The proof of concept that this portrays is fantastic - real time multiplayer with the ability to tie it across (Android) phones and other platforms is amazing. I would hope that developers keep on pushing this to its limits - the results could be incredible!
@beardoc I'm really thinking this is stuff we will be seeing more and more. Especially with the release of WinPhone 7. Think of this with Xbox Live and Achievements!
The proof of concept is without a doubt huge.
Does Androideroids + sitting too long playing Androideroids = HemorrAndroideroids?
@mavickers
Yeah, not a big fan of the Androideroids name. It either sounds like something you need an over-the-counter cream for, or something you get kicked out of Android MLB for.
Love the concept of multi-player. Don't like the first person view at all. You can't see who/what is around you. You just shoot things as they randomly appear in front of you. Very confusing.
Why not keep the view on the phone as a windowed view of the total field that moves with you as you approach the edges of the screen (think old school Defender game, but in all directions)?
A smaller thumbnail radar view of the entire field could be overlayed to show the position of all the other players (no need to render the asteroids in this radar view).
@rlopin
You look at the screen attached to the desktop.
@rlopin
The first person view is meant to be a handicap of sorts, but I agree that it's not implemented well. Maybe a behind-the-ship view would work better, and maybe more regular Asteroids physics.
This reminds me of Pac-Man Vs., which was one of those Gamecube + GBA games. The guy controlling Pac-Man played on the screen with the traditional overhead view. The ghost players used their GBAs and played in a first-person view. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pac-Man_Vs.
@NeoJew I thought the game was meant to be played standalone on the phone and the large tv screen was just a nice way for 'outsiders' to view the battle. You shouldn't require the large screen to play. Even so, making the connection in your mind between where you are on the big screen vs. what you see in the first-person view might take too long for your brain to reconcile (since you have to glance up/away from your phone as opposed to seeing a thumbnail view on the phone itself).
I really like the idea of more than one player and being able to be a spectator to a battle. That part is really cool.
Um... Gaming on Android sucks monkey balls. I'd rather play Virtual Boy.
@Wesscoast
Wow, you're an expert on sucking monkey balls?
Honestly engadget, How much revenue do you make every time you mention the iPhone?
This article has nothing to do with the iPhone! Why even mention it?
@Tristan Because it's a similar concept. Multiple players working on their smartphones and all playing on a shared screen.
Also, I said this was better than iPad scrabble, so I don't understand your complaint...?
@TimStevens
And yet you have tagged links to both the iPhone and iPad Scabble.
Why doesn't Android get a tag in the same article?
Yeah, sure.
@Tristan It was right there at the bottom of the post, but I added it in-line too, just to make you happy.
@TimStevens
Thanks :P
@Tristan Anything for my readers!

@TimStevens
Oh that was real mature Tim lol

Very cool as it brings over 99% of desktops.
But engadget, always finding a way to cram in a reference to the ipad or iphone to balance some android goodness? Tsk tsk. We know you're all geeks that grave Asteroids FTW.
this looks sweet.
That name makes my ass itch.
Shouldn't it be Ast-droids or Aster-droids?

THIS IS AWESOME.
There used to be an arcade game - when Asteroids was a big hit - called "SpaceWars" - which was a two person, head to head game, with graphics just like asteroids. I'd imagine that would be easy to do on an iPad.
Want.
Too cool do you hit your own color asteroid or just hit any?
Awesome game+concept. Now where's the preparation h....?
