Apple has sold three million iPads in 80 days
Apple's just announced that it's sold 3 million iPads worldwide since the US launch date, which is a pretty impressive sales rate, we'll give them that. The announcement also mentions that the tablet will drop in nine more countries during the month of July, so if you're currently living in a sad iPad-less nation, take comfort: you could be next. Press release is below, if you're into that sort of thing.
CUPERTINO, California-June 22, 2010-Apple® today announced that it sold its three millionth iPad™ yesterday, just 80 days after its introduction in the US. iPad is a revolutionary and magical product that allows users to connect with their apps, content and the Internet in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.
"People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month."
Developers have created over 11,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch™ user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 225,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.
Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad's revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*
*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

i bet thats how many iPhone 4's apple will sell in the first week alone
@Stevenk
Sad, but true.
@Stevenk If they had the stock for it, I'm willing to bet they'd sell that in day one. I can't believe how much hype/interest there is behind this device.
@Stevenk
Its a feat.
@KyleG if FaceTime were 3G capable, it would kill AT&T.
Not that AT&T isn't dead already.
@eDan It's only sad when you get disappointed by there success.
@Stevenk
My uncle has an iPAD, it stinks. Not fast, and not impressive.
@Stevenk
A large amount of sales doesn't mean a device is good, people need to remember this...not that i'm saying it was said, but it's a point a lot of apple fanboys throw at people:
"BUT IT SELLS LIKE CRAZY, MUST BE THE BEST DEVICE EVER!!1111!1!1ONE"
@berkleyberkley2010 Maybe your uncle has a defective iPad, or maybe you have an anti-Apple Bias.
@Stevenk I still cant believe they are missing out on the revenue they would make from putting this thing on Verizon. They must be contracted into ATT still, I cant believe Apple would purposefully be missing out on such a profit.
@Stevenk
One ipad every 2-3 seconds?
@Firesuite You think they would miss out on that much? It's not like it's on a contract, or has anything to do with an existing AT&T contract (unlike, say, the iPhone).
If someone really likes the device, they would have to really be in a bad coverage area for AT&T data to not get one (assuming they won't just get the wifi model and tether it or something).
@TickLe MY eLMo
"A large amount of sales doesn't mean a device is good"
Oh, you mean like Windows?
I haven't seen any "fanboys" say that. Seems you are the first.
Quit putting words into people's mouths.
@Joao Cagao
Exactly, you can try to be as clever as you want, but just because windows sells a lot doesn't necessarily mean it's good :).
I love windows, but like anything else, it has its problems.
@TickLe MY eLMo sure, sales lack insight into the true quality of a product, but following traditional market philosophy, strong sales show that the product is something consumers want and will purchase in large numbers, so it's a successful product. and for doing good business, successful products > good products.
@Joao Cagao More like Brittany Spears
@dazzla76 Don't forget the possibility that he has a defective uncle.
Ok, that was mean. Was that mean?
@kirbyatemytoothbrush
Never said it wasn't successful, it is very successful, just saying that it shouldn't be argued, which it is a LOT, that the iphone or ipad are good products because they sell a lot.
And don't put me on the cross people, i personally think the iphones are great devices, don't like the ipad much but it is a good device for some people.
@HighestRanked2
Now you are just being ignorant and bringing a fanboy war in here, go mac fanboy troll somewhere else, you are going completely off topic.
@HighestRanked2 Ha, you must pray this every night before you go to bed, because unlike your self-fulfilling prophecy, people buy what they want; Simply put. I can't imagine your theory of 120 million people "sheepishly" buying Windows 7 to throw it away for a Mac the following year. It doesn't make sense.
The iPad is a huge success and so was Windows 7. Just because it sells well doesn't mean it's good, but that doesn't mean it was bad either. The pendulum swings both ways, ameegos. Or maybe you guys can't accept they were good in the first place. Oh well, it's your opinion.
@HighestRanked2 macs are superior eh? is that why they cant make new text files unless you go into the applications folder, opening the notepad thing, and making a new test. or as my mac friend sais * i just search notepad to make a text* last time i checked, windows was right click create new. oh wait, osx doesnt have that so i cant use that as an example can i. also i do beleive windows makes a sucsefull server os, where macs server os? barly anyone has heard of it becuase it SUCKS. durp
@N900
Whoa there big guy, i never once put down the ipad here, a couple posts down i did, but i only stated the facts in that post, calling it not a magical device, i don't think it is good, but i don't think it is bad either.
Impressive.
@Niteperson
No, actually nothing like Brittany Spears
@Stevenk Video calling over mobile networls had been around for years now (theres a standard for it but once again Apple is ignoring it) and didn't kill any network. In fact, no one uses it.
@Stevenk
Yeah,
but the iPhone isn't a useless tablet that doesn't do anything I can't already do now.
@TickLe MY eLMo Oh, well if it sounds like a was being terse there, then I apologize. And I can agree with you to a certain extent.
At least you didn't say something along the lines of that other guy's comment. That just didn't make any sense, sounded very fanboyish. ^^;
@N900
Agrees all around!
@HighestRanked2
I question if macs are really a superior computing experience. I have had way to many laptops, currently have 2 windows based and 1 macbook pro. Don't get me wrong, I like my mac, of the 3 its the one I use for surfing the net and killing time, but that thing gets freakishly hot. Way hotter then my windows based laptops, one of which has superior hardware. Just saying if you can burn yourself on a laptop is that really superior? I do realize windows based laptops get hot as well, but that varies by company, apple only makes these few laptops it seems like they could do a better job with that. Then maybe I could see why someone would say its superior, may not agree but could see why someone would think that.
Congrats Apple, wish I could get one.
@Stevenk i dont know if any of you remember this, but, ENGADGET SAID THAT THEY WONT NOTIFY US EVERY TIME IPAD SALES REACHES ONE MORE MILLION!!!!!!!!
These are the exact words engadget said to us: "We PROMISE we won't bother you with sales figures every time another million gets rounded."
Notice the word promise!
@Firesuite
Even with Apple's considerable production power they can only produce so many units. At this point it sounds like the IPS LCD is the bottleneck. So they probably wouldn't have enough units to provide for a Verizon launch anyway.
@Stevenk That's so true lol
@huskie fluff
Wow you mean I have to type notepad in the search field on a mac? I write texts on my pc all day who needs word when you can just right click in windows and chose notepad. Windows is the future lol.
@Joao Cagao Since when is software a device? I am sure if I told my friends that I was going to go play with my windows they'd be like WTF BECAUSE WINDOWS ISN'T A DEVICE.
@HighestRanked2
Windows PCs have the same or better hardware for less, that's the advantage einstein, not to mention a superior selection of software. And apparently "more and more people are realizing this" because they aren't buying Macs. Apple's Mac growth is flat at less than 5% global marketshare as of Q1 2010.
Facts > bias
@Firesuite It's possible el Jobso is still holding it against Verizon for turning him down when Apple went to them first with the original iPhone.
@Shooter McGavin
Bullshit all the way around. Obviously you've never done an actual feature-by-feature comparison. And since Mac sales are increasing every single quarter, I'm not sure how you saying they're not can possibly be considered a "fact".
But keep on hating, that's obviously working out well for you.
@Jack
Again I refer you to my last statement. Facts > bias. There are plenty of sources for the marketshare fact, all you need to do is go look.
You apple fans are the biggest bunch of morons I've ever had the displeasure of knowing.
@Shooter McGavin
You just killed your lack of a point with that statement. Why dont you go update your virus definitions? It's a feature, isnt it?
Mac users > you
@king_electric_warmonger
My previous statement didn't lack a point moron. Your fanboy displeasure doesn't change the facts.
Strong sales means a product will be well supported, unlike Maemo. I tried the Maemo path for a few years. Just made me skeptical about Android and Chrome. iOS is at least a known and familiar quantity.
@huskie fluff It's true. I find that there are plenty of little shortcuts on windows where there is only one way on OS/X. I actually WANT 10 different ways to do the same thing, not just Steve Jobs' way.
@Joao Cagao
Hate to break it to you, but i think he meant Apple.
@king_electric_warmonger
Why should he, it's automatic.
*Happy Windows user*
@TickLe MY eLMo
WTF this is completely different. Does the iPhone have 90% market share? Do people line up days in advance to get a copy of the newest version of windows?
Come on man, apples to oranges.
It's a second wave of interest as people who've seen the iPhone around for a few years now finally decide to jump on the bandwagon because they like what they see.
@HighestRanked2 Sorry. Did you just come from 2002 because that was the last time I'd actually heard that argument.
@TickLe MY eLMo
I dunno.
Compared to ipod or iphone numbers, ipad numbers don't seem so hot. Like all similar attempts at marketing through numerology, they depend on the ignorance of the target audience.
Thousands of apps.
Billions served.
@Stevenk WHAT THEY DON'T TELL YOU IS HOW MANY HAVE BEEN RETURNED. I HAVE SPOKE WITH 3 WORST BUYS AND 3 APPLE STORES. EACH ONE HAS SAID ABOUT 20-30 HAVE BEEN RETURNED.
