Apple has sold three million iPads in 80 days
Apple's just announced that it's sold 3 million iPads worldwide since the US launch date, which is a pretty impressive sales rate, we'll give them that. The announcement also mentions that the tablet will drop in nine more countries during the month of July, so if you're currently living in a sad iPad-less nation, take comfort: you could be next. Press release is below, if you're into that sort of thing.
CUPERTINO, California-June 22, 2010-Apple® today announced that it sold its three millionth iPad™ yesterday, just 80 days after its introduction in the US. iPad is a revolutionary and magical product that allows users to connect with their apps, content and the Internet in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.
"People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We're working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month."
Developers have created over 11,000 exciting new apps for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch™ user interface, large screen and high-quality graphics. iPad will run almost all of the more than 225,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®.
Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad's revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface. iPad is 0.5 inches thin and weighs just 1.5 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and delivers up to 10 hours of battery life.*
*Battery life depends on device settings, usage and other factors. Actual results vary.
Apple ignited the personal computer revolution with the Apple II, then reinvented the personal computer with the Macintosh. Apple continues to lead the industry with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system, and iLife, iWork and professional applications. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store, has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

@ModernHeretic
they are usability experts...
how many top architects do you see on building sites mixing their own cement?
how many top film directors do you see mending the fuse on the lighting rigs?
why the fuck would a busy artist want to have to wade through clunky folders and shitty file heirarchies?
who would like to see their partners food digested as they sit at the table to eat together?
because that's the user experience microsoft treat you to when you start up a machine and watch your life disappear as you wait to get into your email account... it's taken microsoft until 2010 to deliver an os that doesn't insult the eyes... and i am being very liberal with that...
why should a computer, being the main workhorse of your day and working life, be made of shitty plastics and have a very vulnerable operating system and require the involvement of software from a million other companies and a huge internal argument...
when you can pay a couple of extra pounds for a well designed machine, that operates faster, more reliably and.. erm.. on your point... cuts to the chase because our lives are too short to even give a fuck about it's innards... got a job to do you know?
you are probably a gifted masturbator... i can tell...
@ModernHeretic
You specifically said that people are buying iPads INSTEAD OF computers because they're too stupid to use a computer.
That means you're an idiot. If your only argument against iPads or the number of them that have sold is "iPad users are stupid", you blew it.
@Jack
Give him some slack. It's obvious that ModernHeretic thinks very highly of himself that he thinks it's cool and hip to look down on his idevice-using brethren by making an otherwise ignorant blanket statement. Give him a few years and he might learn a thing or two. People like these, they end up working in technical fields, because they'd make absolutely terrible business analysts.
@ModernHeretic
Suppose what you're saying is true. Wouldn't that mean the beginning of the end of real computers? You should brace for impact.

@omegamale nicely said... but just like jobs, you have a way with manipulation. Next time try throwing in catch phrases like "magical" "revolutionary" and "game changing", maybe then you'll sound more convincing unlike the fanboi martyr you're coming off as.
Now go play with your iWhateva.

see that's it right there.... what an idiot... it's exactly this crap that makes me sigh everytime i log in here... it's a real bore... aren't we all tech fans? did apple wrong you? did they make you do bad things?
if you don't mind i will go play with my i-whatever, probably enjoy the experience as i have done for over a decade, and continue to earn a good living out of it... unphased by other people who choose a different brand of technology than i do.... because.... it would be pretty gay if i did... pretty gay, very pointless, and really weird.... to actually care about what some other random ass hole chooses to use... know what i mean?
fanny.
@ModernHeretic
also...
kinda f*cked up just how many posts you have made slagging off apple on apple product threads... wee bit obbsessed aren't you?
you should check that...
makes me think of those repressed homosexuals that end up raping gays...
hah, I think macrumors forums. was just shut down by everyone flying in to see the videos and stuff from the phone. hah.
That's nothing... my friend Tommy sold half a million brake pads in one afternoon.
@Shigawire
heh heh heh
Apple got a long way to go... McDonald's has sold over 60 billion burgers
ipads arent that fast.... jobs fucked you guys in the ass.... the iphone 4 is faster than the ipad.... meaning you gotta spend like 900 bucks on the 2nd gen ipad and its not even 4g.... and you gotta wait a year for the iphone 4gs and it might not even be 4g.... depends on at&t's network
@big nazty
Why do the Apple haters always have to be so stupid? Can't you guys ever make an argument that makes any kind of sense at all? I guess that's just really too much to ask.
@Jack That's all they've left: The fanatics and the imbeciles.
It's great to hear a tablet is selling... but I wonder if people are actually using it. I mean, does this do anything the iPod Touch can't do? And I'm not talking about reading books, because after reading text on an iPad, I can't imagine anyone seriously considering this a competitor to epaper / the Kindle.
@Smurf
Um, the Kindle only does one thing. The iPad does a whole lot more, which is presumably why people want them. Did that not occur to you? Also, the iPad has a color screen. Not sure if you noticed that.
Besides that, it can do one obvious thing the Touch can't do - display things on a 10" screen. If you don't think that's an important enough differentiator, you have obviously never tried to read a book on a Touch. Additionally, the iPad has other apps like iWork that aren't available for the Touch, and clearly the Touch is a portable PMP that can run apps, while the iPad is not intended to fit in your pocket. It's a portable internet device, not a PMP.
If you don't get why the iPad exists, you probably haven't used one. I'd suggest doing that first before forming an opinion about it.
@Smurf
Dude, seriously? The Kindle hardware is dead. It will go on as software on Android and iOS devices, but Kindle has basically been slaughtered by the iPad in a couple months.
“When something exceeds your ability to understand how it works, it sort of becomes... magical.” - Apple
...and this is the thanks I get for sticking up for you, they called you stupid, iDidn't. lol
Damnnnn ... i didn't know there were that many idiots on this planet
@1q2w3e4r
So what you're saying is that you're not quite smart enough to understand why people want iPads.
@Jack
No smarty pants, what I am saying is that everyone who buy's one of these is an idiot. The device is alright but not good enough to draw in the crowd that can look beyond the advertising bullshit. Great idea but miss on the execution. Apparently A4 is amazing so why not let it multi task. Large screen, again perfect for multitasking, or flash, it wouldn't hurt to send an sms or even do a random video call, skype etc. That's why I'm calling these people idiots. Obviously they didn't do enough research or just don't care because they want to have the latest and they don't give a crap if its not the greatest.
Skimmed thought the posts looking for your replay and I notice you're one hell of a fanboy. I mean just outright attacking anyone who says anything bad about apple. Did you ever think some people might be making jokes in their comments just because it gets the fanboy blood pumping and its funny to see you guys get mad.
Dance puppets dance
@1q2w3e4r
Yeah. That guy got mad.. what a...fanboy...that guy is.
@1q2w3e4r
OK, I keep hearing that same line about pretty much all of Apple's products when they're successful. The "it's all because of their marketing" line.. Can you explain exactly what marketing you're referring to? I'm not being a smartass or condescending in any way, I really am curious. As far as I can tell the ONLY nationwide marketing they've done for the iPad is the SINGLE ad they sometimes run on TV. On top of that, I don't recall ANY marketing for the new iPhone. You had to go out of your way to find out when it would be available for pre-sale/sale, and to some extent, that it even existed in the first place. Hell, Apple even went out of their way to NOT let anyone broadcast it's (or the iPad's) unveiling.
There HAS been a lot of coverage of both devices from news organizations and tech blogs but that's only because those stories are hugely popular and there's a high demand for them. When Apple hints at releasing a new product people naturally become really curious do the marketing for them by talking about it to no end. If you're saying they're guilty of making products that people go out of their way to talk about then I have to agree, but saying that they somehow control that is totally ridiculous.
@anothernerd
I don't know where you live but on one of my about 30 mile commutes I see about 5 large billboards and a boat load little bus stop posters. So i would say that about every 2.5 to 3 miles I see an ipad commercial ... thats excluding 2 huge ipod touch billboard. I can't speak for the TV since I don't watch it or have it. But to say that their marketing has be subtle is wrong. I would like to see the demographic breakdown of their sales numbers.
@ wesscoast
witty
I'm sure the thing is fast and slick. It just doesn't work for me though. Whether it's Android-based, Apple or Windows; I simply don't need it.
@lerxst
It doesn't work for me either, that's why I don't have one. Your reason for not wanting one is perfectly valid.
What's with self-typed sigs?
Posted from my computer. Which doesn't add any advertising boast to the end of it.
just cause of all the hype...
heres a nice updated quote i found on the internet by Rajiv Dingra
"HYPE -- A reason why some bollywood movies are Box office hits even if they suck. And OVERHYPE -- A reason why 3 million iPads get sold in 80 days as well."
all this hype around that shit also ALL OVER Engadget just makes me hate the Apple -> religion
This happens everytime. Apple users get torched for getting excited when Steve Jobs announces a cool device with huge upside. They get called names like fanboy, and drinking the kool aid.
Guess what you friggin luddites...once again, the 'fanboys' were right about the potential for the iPad. Everyone who said "I don't get it, it's just a big iPod touch LOLZ" should be banned from Engadget, and sent back to school.
But look, i already see moronic comments like "I dunno. Compared to ipod or iphone numbers, ipad numbers don't seem so hot."
Like hot f***cking stupid do you have to be to expect a 500-1000 dollar device THAT IS TOTALLY DISCRETIONARY to have iPhone-like sales right out of the gate.
Most Engadget commenters are .....BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEP
Does anyone know who did the picture on the wallpaper of that ipad?
Im baffled.
It really does show how the right marketing can sell anything.
Not sure how a gimped piece of tech can sell that many pieces on name brand alone.
On the bright side I guess this really is the age of the geek ((which is great IMO)). People are so anxious for tech theyll buy inferior HW for the sake of being in the loop.
The success of Nintendo Wii , iPad and Iphone 4 really are exclamation marks that geeks are no longer in the shadows and you dont need top grade HW/SW to be king of a market. Style & ease of use are at the forefront.
Kudos to Apple marketing guys for another hit.
@ManMythLegend
Are you saying that electronics and gadgets shouldn't be easy to use so only elitist geeks like you can buy/use them?
Attended a class recently and saw my first iPad in the wild. Student next to me took notes the whole week on an old school notepad while his iPad sat idle on his desk. I took 5 days of notes using a $228 Acer netbook running Ubuntu. Yea it wasn't as pretty as the iPad but it came with a free keyboard and tethered with my phone.
I find it funny how something as expensive as a laptop is less functional. Gotta admire the marketing genius of Apple.
Cool Story Bro
could someone tell me where to get that great wallpaper used on the ipad in the screenshot?
Apple is great. It got too much applications. There's no dedicated Yahoo Messenger or Live messenger for Android. But iPad/iPhone/iPod got that. I'll buy one of any these three awesome devices.
This is fairly depressing for me. I think if the iPad was actually all that good, it wouldn't end up requiring any web developers to do backflips to make their existing sites work on it.
Yeah, I'm biased. I'm also sick of getting requests to do special features just for people who have been told their crippled mobile browser is just as good as the real thing. I guess if you pay that much for a giant iPod you feel you're owed something special in return?
And probably 1 million of those are already on the used market.
Wow. That's shocking really when one considers its many shortcomings. It's a sexy gadget though, and Apple definitely has the name brand cache. Personally, I think I'll wait until some of these alternative devices ( http://www.alternatives2ipad.com/ipad-competition-devices-overview/ ) come out before I make a purchase though.
In the process, 1000 Foxconn employees committed suicide.
