Intel's X25-M and X25-V SSDs now stocked on Best Buy's shelves
Best Buy selling some new hard drives may not exactly sound like news, but it is when the drives in question are Intel's X25-M and X25-V SSDs, which just so happen to be the first SSDs that Best Buy has ever stocked on its store shelves. Those should now be available at some 800 Best Buy stores across the U.S., although you'll still have to go online if you want anything other than the 40GB or 80GB models. Let's just hope this push into retail is soon followed by some more consumer-friendly prices.

The PNY Drive shown on www.bestbuy.com has a newer SKU, but I definitely remember a PNY SSD being around before the Intel drives hit the shelves.
Prices will still be better online. I love newegg and tigerdirect. :)

Looks like the same price to me. Also, you get yours right away from BestBuy.
@Polarix Wouldn't you want OEM for $30 less?

Ugh, damn Engadget SPAM filter.
don't forget no shippin cost, no tax, and bing cash back.
@Ducman69 NewEgg charges tax, iirc.
@LloydChiro ive never been charged tax from new egg.
The 80 GB size is the sweetspot for me. I might get one, but prolly not from BestBuy.
No point buying any of these. 22nm drives will come in a few months.
Wow, whoever wrote the specs on Best Buy's site must be high, because those specs are WAAAY off.
@zshift
What specs are off? They look right to me.
Amazingly this is the same price as Newegg (for the retail, not the OEM). Still, I'd rather wait a week to get it in the mail than spend a penny at Best Buy.
I will get an SSD when I can get an Intel 128GB for $200 or less.
@Yankee Intel doesn't make a 128GB SSD, so that will never happen.
Gonna have to check this out. Don't have to wait for ups to deliver this plus if something goes wrong. And I have 30 days to return/exchange this without waiting for the 4-7 rma days.
I just saw my local Best Buy just got one, Sunday I went in to grab a wifi card. I saw one lonely 40Gb X25 for 129.99, I was half tempted to give the little guy a home too.
I have an Intel X25-M, 80GB. It's crazy fast, and it's super quiet in my netbook. I don't notice the battery increase, but otherwise it was well worth the purchase. I paid $150 off Craigslist for it.
I saw one this past weekend as well. Good news for the future when they drop to reasonable prices.
We've had these in store for well over a month...didn't think it was breaking news or I would have sent in the tip lol
$2.87 per GB.
I can get a refurb 1 TB regular hard drive for $50.
It may not be as fast or last as long but I figure It would last until however long it takes for these to come down.
@Ninjakid4
SSDs are and will remain HUGELY overpriced for data storage for anywhere in the near future.
If its a desktop, you can usually fit a desktop drive AND an SSD wedged somewhere, no matter how small the case.
That way you get a nice 40GB or 64GB SSD for boot and frequently used applications with random read times that are out of this world, and a 2TB drive for dedicated storage and backup of your operating system (I like Acronis that will take several snapshots on your separate drive w/o ever the risk of worrying about not being able to boot or losing a Windows restore point). =)
Combine that w/ 4-6GB of RAM which seems to be the sweet spot for maximizing W7 superfetch, and performance is quite simply outstanding.
VERY fast boots and instant application launches, which frankly is what 90% of your wait time is for day to day tasks.
PS: And even for your laptop, if you setup a home server (HP has some that are very affordable), you can centralize all your storage needs and stream them over your internet connection when on the go.
W/ 4G and WiFi hotspots all over the place and at hotels and work, its really not a challenge, and worst case scenario you can always pack a small USB powered 500GB WD Passport in your laptop bag.
Best SSD in market for sure.
damn when are the prices for SSDs gonna come down. I want one for my lappy but these are too expensive atm. $450 for 160GB Intel is too much.
I wish Best buy would carry more than one or two on the self. Its hard to sell a product when it isnt on the self.
That's exactly what I paid for it last year. If they really want to make SSD's mainstream they need to lower the prices.
Sheesh, I remember receiving these about 2 weeks ago... should have given a heads-up on this.
I'm sure I'll pick up the 40GB on my next paycheck; it'll make a nice little system drive.
