The thinking all along was that there'd be an allocation of unreserved
iPhone 4s in AT&T stores this Thursday for customers who didn't bother to (or couldn't) pre-order the phone ahead of time, but not so much. Turns out that the extra stock won't be arriving until June 29, at which point it'll be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (read: every man, woman, and child for themselves) both in stores and online. Of course, this is strictly an AT&T announcement -- Apple Stores and Best Buys are still possibilities -- but basically, there's no point in lining up on the 24th at your local AT&T shop unless you've got confirmation that a reserved phone is available for you. Follow the break for AT&T's full statement.
"iPhone 4 pre-order sales on June 15 were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3GS last year. Demand is simply unprecedented. We're thrilled to see the excitement around iPhone 4 and are committed to helping as many customers as quickly as we can. As we said last week, we're committed to fulfilling preorders first – and are on track to do so. Here is an update that we just posted:
AT&T is on-track to deliver iPhone 4 to customers who preordered the device on June 15. We look forward to offering iPhone 4 to all other customers beginning Tuesday, June 29, when it goes on sale in all AT&T sales channels.
Here are a few guidelines for customers buying iPhone 4 from AT&T:
• Preordered for home or business delivery: iPhone 4 will begin arriving this week for customers who preordered. We'll send an email when each order has shipped.
• Preordered for store delivery: AT&T retail representatives will begin calling customers this week to let them know their iPhone 4 is available for pick up in store.
• Retail purchase (no preorder): AT&T plans to have iPhone 4 inventory – available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last – on June 29 in its retail locations, at www.att.com, and in business sales channels. As inventory sells out, AT&T will offer the convenient option of purchasing iPhone 4 and having it delivered to a home or business or an AT&T store. As always, customers will receive an email once their order is placed, and again when it ships.
To help customers stay up to date on iPhone 4 activities and important information, AT&T will post a series of videos beginning early this week at www.facebook.com/att. The videos will be informative and packed with customer-friendly tips and instructions around order fulfillment, iPhone 4 activation, inventory and – importantly – the new MicroSIM unique to iPhone 4 devices."
hopefully the verizon september launch wont be as bad

@hyporez
No facts == stupid comment. We all wish for verizon iphone but don't spread rumors if you got no facts.
Anyway, anyone know whether RadioShack will have it on 24th?
@hyporez
actually, that verizon van is going to deliver them for ATT
@hyporez I wish. I don't see that happening though. Steve Jobs has had personal beef with Verizon since they rejected him in 2005, he will go anywhere but Verizon first.
@who said what Speak for yourself, I covet a Sprint iPhone :)
Scratch that, I covet great phones and better service, period.
@who said what Confirmed: no retailer will have physical inventory on the 24th. Apple does not have enough devices to supply for the demand. The apple stores will have a small handful of them but don't expect best buy, radio shack etc to have them before corporate AT&T stores.
@hyporez
LOL at every camper,,,
@hyporez Agreed with everyone else. How slow do you have to be to think with all the inventory demand apple has for this device that they could possible be gearing up/ready for another launch in september? (please downrank into oblivion)
@hyporez
I figured out their problem: They hit their 2 GB limit on processing their orders this month.
Article: "Turns out that the extra stock won't be arriving until June 29, at which point it'll be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (read: every man, woman, and child for themselves) both in stores and online."
*chugs beer*
*loads shotgun*
I'm ready!
@bob1000 -- "Steve Jobs has had personal beef with Verizon since they rejected him in 2005, he will go anywhere but Verizon first."
I dunno. Steve has a business to run and money to make. All the articles I read about their meetings 5 years ago say that Apple and Verizon just couldn't come to a business agreement. I don't think it was anything personal. And, if you look at all of Apple's particular business policies... Verizon looking out for its own interest isn't so out of place.
Another interesting point... Apple now sells the iPhone on 5 carriers in the UK.... up from only 1 exclusive carrier for the first 3 years. Why would Apple sell the iPhone on 5 carriers? They must wanna sell more iPhones in the UK or something.
Well, there are more customers on Verizon than the entire population of the UK. That's a market that kinda hard to ignore.
If Apple wants to sell more products... which you know they do since they have a business to run... I don't think any amount of personal problems should stand in the way.
Sure, they'd have to make a CDMA iPhone... but since they initially wanted Verizon first... there must be some CDMA radios somewhere inside of Apple.
EVERY cell phone manufacturer makes both CDMA and GSM phones... Apple certainly has the ability to do both too.
Demand unprecedented, a lot of preorders canceled, sounds to me someone put the wrong digits in that 600,000!
@Michael Scrip Have you ever heard of Steve Jobs before? At one point Jobs and Adobe were best friends (look up the history of PostScript) so if you don't think he takes things personally and lets it affect his business decisions you clearly haven't been paying attention.
@Michael Scrip
Please show me a GSM Sanyo phone
@who said what// I the Houston area at least, Radio Shack will not be receiving any iPhones. There was one location that will get 2, but the rest will not get any.
@AttOrlando https://www.samstores.com/details.asp?ProdID=5739
@bob1000
It would also be amazing since the 5 year exclusivity agreement has already been verified as well as referenced in a court case. Apparently people can't count. You CAN'T see it on verizon until 2012 at the earliest and we all know the world is ending then so it really doesn't matter now, does it!
@AttOrlando
I didn't even know Sanyo made cell phones. I was too busy thinking about HTC, Motorola, Nokia, Palm, RIM, Samsung, LG, etc.
@BiGD23
Yeah, I've heard of Steve Jobs before. And who knows if he took the thing with Verizon personally. He shouldn't... it was just business. I don't think Verizon said mean things about Steve's mama.
All I know is that the iPhone sells more in America than any other country. Apple is an American company... and Verizon is the largest carrier in America.
What if Sprint takes it personally that Apple didn't even consider them 5 years ago?
@Michael Scrip Verizon is second largest ftr
apple store reservation FTW
@TomSawyer
Shhh no one tell the guy who started camping a couple days ago...
@The Stig
hahaha!
and i love you on top gear!
@The Stig He's already reserved, seriously, he said he likes the idea of camping and being first despite having a reservation
@caprice
Nah that ain't /the/ Stig. The Stig's post would have been like this:
" ."
Is it possible to get an early upgrade AT&T offer through apple store after the 24th?
@roman7927
or at the actual Apple store?
this....will...make....people....ANGRY
@ryan7723
Yeah it means the hourly Engadget posts about iPhones won't slow down until the 29th.
Bugger for people who love standing in line I guess, but for some reason I forsee folks standing in line anyway...
@Chris Ziegler
Man, you make it like of matter of life or death on a sinking boat or something. "every man, woman, and child for themselves." Get a life!
@allston232 Dude, blogging is his life...he's doing his job...
@allston232 Everyone knows it's Women and Children first on a sinking boat!
@allston232
He has a real job and writes for Engadget. YOU, on other hand just leave comments on his posts. So who needs to get a life here?
@allston232 he was obviously just joking to entertain his readers, douche.
Smh, this is getting out of hand...
In lighter news, mine shall be here tomorrow...wish everyone luck!
lol to bad for that guy thats been camping out front
I preordered online from AT&T at 5am on the 15th... and my order status still reads "In Progress" on the AT&T site. I'd just better get my damn phone on the 24th.
@Veraxus Right. I also pre-ordered early from AT&T and mine still says "In Progress" as well. Figured it would have shipped by now, given that people who ordered from Apple have already received theirs!
@Veraxus Magic eight ball says:
"Outlook not so good."
@jimgadgetman i preordered, mine said shipped, but then the tracker said it hadnt been received, i called and learned that my preorder was messed up and not coming.. ugh its lame.
@Veraxus I also Pre-ordered from AT&T on the 15th and have been watching the In progress every day since... on the Flip side I had exactly the same experience when I ordered the iPad 3G ,, didnt indicate shipped till the day I recieved it.. and it did Arrive on time..
@Veraxus
Same here as the rest of you. Pre-ordered 12 minutes into the crazyness on the 15th. I have the email confirmation to prove it. Order status has been "In Process" ever since. Odd thing is I've found two different ways to check status on the order and one way said "backorder" the last couple of days then just changed back to "In Process" today, "backorder" was removed (good I hope). Unfortunately it still doesn't show as shipped and my credit card hasn't been charged so I'm skeptical about receiving my i4 delivered to me on Thursday : (
Please downrank me
@techee44 .....i....cant....why...cant...i.... :(
@techee44 Ha! I unranked your ass! Eat it!
@techee44
Proof that reverse psychology works lol
@SEscobedo
Oh my god, that was my experiment. Tomorrow's experiment: see if "Please uprank me" gets me downranked.
Not kidding though, that WAS the point of my post.
OMG, the world will end, 7 days wait??? NOOOOO!!
Hey go worf down another dozen burgers, those are fast serve, no wait instant gratification
If i wanted this phone, I would just wait about a month after it's released. No lines to worry about.
Of course I'm not pretentious enough to where I need it the first day to show everybody I have it.
