No pre-order? AT&T won't have an iPhone 4 for you until June 29

The thinking all along was that there'd be an allocation of unreserved iPhone 4s in AT&T stores this Thursday for customers who didn't bother to (or couldn't) pre-order the phone ahead of time, but not so much. Turns out that the extra stock won't be arriving until June 29, at which point it'll be available on a first-come, first-serve basis (read: every man, woman, and child for themselves) both in stores and online. Of course, this is strictly an AT&T announcement -- Apple Stores and Best Buys are still possibilities -- but basically, there's no point in lining up on the 24th at your local AT&T shop unless you've got confirmation that a reserved phone is available for you. Follow the break for AT&T's full statement. "iPhone 4 pre-order sales on June 15 were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3GS last year. Demand is simply unprecedented. We're thrilled to see the excitement around iPhone 4 and are committed to helping as many customers as quickly as we can. As we said last week, we're committed to fulfilling preorders first – and are on track to do so. Here is an update that we just posted:
AT&T is on-track to deliver iPhone 4 to customers who preordered the device on June 15. We look forward to offering iPhone 4 to all other customers beginning Tuesday, June 29, when it goes on sale in all AT&T sales channels.
Here are a few guidelines for customers buying iPhone 4 from AT&T:
• Preordered for home or business delivery: iPhone 4 will begin arriving this week for customers who preordered. We'll send an email when each order has shipped.
• Preordered for store delivery: AT&T retail representatives will begin calling customers this week to let them know their iPhone 4 is available for pick up in store.
• Retail purchase (no preorder): AT&T plans to have iPhone 4 inventory – available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last – on June 29 in its retail locations, at www.att.com, and in business sales channels. As inventory sells out, AT&T will offer the convenient option of purchasing iPhone 4 and having it delivered to a home or business or an AT&T store. As always, customers will receive an email once their order is placed, and again when it ships.
To help customers stay up to date on iPhone 4 activities and important information, AT&T will post a series of videos beginning early this week at www.facebook.com/att. The videos will be informative and packed with customer-friendly tips and instructions around order fulfillment, iPhone 4 activation, inventory and – importantly – the new MicroSIM unique to iPhone 4 devices."

Heres a better prediction for you: You will respond with some snarky comment about iphone ruling the world and me being a fandroid or something stupid like that. Oh and you will continue to beat your chest about iphone ruling in future comments. Cause in reality its really important for there to be a dominate phone..

Just called my ATT store down the street from me in Florida, she said yes they're going to have iPhones 4's on the 24th.
already being a MBP and itunes user I was really tempted away from Evo and other forthcoming Android phones by the nice specs of iphone 4. too bad ATT's continued antics are really making me want to switch to Sprint.

ok just fyi i used to work for ATT and the story was always they short there stores so they dont have to pay there reps money for getting new customers.....the EXCE for att do this on purpose so they defer all the customers to APPLE and BEST BUY!!! 2007 2008 2009 and know 2010 they dont even have any ....each year the demand has always been there and they didnt see it coming again ?
@monsoonx Wow... I can tell why you don't work for them anymore. Ever heard of the cwa? Like they would stand for AT&T withholding inventory to keep from paying reps. Not to mention it's their business to sell phones dummy. Please tell me you work for sprint or metro... That would be appropriate.

So, I reordered online paid $210 and have to wait till July 15th till I get my iPhone 4. I wish I could take my receipt into AT&T on the 29th and force them to give me one.

My Radio Shack is saying they will have them to fufilll pre-orders and then first come first serve. But I just don't believe them. I also don't believe they will give me $200 for my 3GS. It just seems to good to be true.

I just heard from a friend that works at an AT&T corporate store & they JUST received the news themselves about an hour ago. Websites & bloggers beat them too it! This is all due to apple's inventory levels. No reason to be mad at the stores when it's out of their control. just sayin.

Well I just called my local store here in New Jersey and they said as of right now NO AT&T store across America knows whats happening and no body exactly knows when the iPhone 4's REAL release date for AT&T retail stores for those who didn't order is and that they will inform everybody by tonight 8PM EST so yeah I guess Engadget wasn't lying but still you guys should confirm this before posting really
The reps in the stores are getting royally screwed on this whole launch. They planned on preorders continuing from the 14th...didn't happen.
They planned on selling starting Thursday....not happening.
They have to work from 6a.m. til 8p.m. in most stores just to be there for preorder pickups that they've already sold.
Now on the 29th they have to be there from 6a.m. til 8p.m. again. What are the odds that they will be able to do much before the systems crash again due to high volume? Not very good.
Sorry, I had to rant a bit there.
@Waltah as a former retails store manager i can appreciate the feeling of being caught with your trousers down. it smacks of the typcial decisions made by someone who has never spent a day on the sales floor, i am completely amazed at how bad the launch, pre-order and day of sales are/will be handled.
Meanwhile the Droid Incredible remains backordered until 7/20. Chalk one up for Apple in this case since they can at least resupply within a week or two. I'm looking for ways to leave my wife stuck with our Verizon contract so I can hop on over to the new iPhone. But she renewed a 2 year contract a few months ago with a Touch Pro 2 so I may be stuck chasing unicorns on VZW.
It's all gravy, baby. I just called my nearby Apple store and they said they will have extra phones for those that did not pre-order. Now, if all fails, Walmart confirmed over the phone that they aren't taking any pre-orders and will be selling this sexy beast on a first come, first serve basis. Due take note that their mobile activations hotline doesn't open till 8 or 9am. The Walmart rep. I spoke with said she was there when the 3gs launched and I quote "people didn't do all that and camp out, we had enough and sold them like any other day."
So there u have it, plan B.
This is a big deal, if AT&T had no iphone to give, wouldn't they post this statement on their website? Send me the link to this statement and I will obey, otherwise, I'm still getting up early in the morning. I just cannot see how Walmart would have iphones in stock over AT&T.....

The Best Buy Iphone 4 reserves won't be met check local best buy store for availability,only 16gb model on launch day only. Only 12 Iphone's 4 16gb models available on launch day only at Minnetonka, MN. Reserves Only no walk in's. I switch my order from 32gb to a 16gb and was 1-6 in line.
so after doing 3 launches already at&t has learned nothing, what a bungle.
So why exactly is AT&T going to have unclaimed phones for any shmuck to pick up on June 29th, when my Apple Store pre-order won't ship until mid-July?
Also just got conformation from a friend at a corporate AT&T store. Looks like all us losers who couldn't get through on the 15 are waiting a few more days. Totally bummed.

Tell me why my local best buy is only getting 5 iPhone 4's out of 30 preorders and my local walmart is getting 2?
Best Buy said they will take care of preorders and then the rest of the Iphone 4 left will be first come basis.
If ATT cant even handle selling the phone, why do people expect the network to handle the phones when they're actually working?
So is AT&T opening early on june 29?
