Verizon's Droid Eris goes on permanent vacation
You might have figured that the recent update to Android 2.1 would've given Verizon's Droid Eris a few months of additional shelf life, but alas, it was not to be; the phone is no longer available from Verizon's online store, and we'd assume that any remaining inventory in the field will dwindle to nothingness in the coming weeks. If anything, it seems like the device -- basically a tweaked Hero -- would be able to effectively soldier on indefinitely for $50 or so on contract, but maybe the carrier's intent on keeping Android a higher-end affair for the time being. And hey, with the Droid X and Droid 2 coming any week now, we suppose it's getting pretty crowded anyhow. Ultra-cheap original Droid, anyone?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

who cares about this no-name phone, honesly
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly Ya know I was gonna say somethin' but.....ya...meh.
@N900 Ewww, looking over this comment, it looks like I'm bashing the phone. =\
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
NOTICE
don't feed the troll
@N900
I would reply to you guys with a slick comment ... but I will just sit back and watch your comments disappear over time...
@newjaruz
Maybe they'll have better sales with the next 17 Android phones over the next year.
@Dragngt
I can see the jealousy in your eye. Why you ask? Well, there aren't going to be 17 Android phones released in the next year. Also, phone makers see Android as a promising OS hence the reason more Android phones are being made then any other OS. More variety equals more innovation and competition. Sorry Apple.
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
This is the best encarnation of the HTC hero yet...I'm sure there are thousands of units being used right now. Your opinion is therefore irrelevant.
@benthe1
havent seen any android innovation in the past 2 years
@DoctarPeppar
I beg to differ. I'm sure it's a fine phone, it's just really ugly looking. All of the other Hero designs are much better looking personally.
@Dafrety Even though the internals are basically the same I like the looks of the Hero better than the Eris. the Eris had the weird curves and such...
@DoctarPeppar
Both versions of the Hero look better and have more functional physical buttons.
@newjaruz : actually, I seriously considered getting this phone because of the good looking hardware. I still love the feel of the back, and the very curvy jutt at the bottom.
Bye bye
@enaybee and hello Droid 2!
It will probably be re-branded and featured on Straight Talk
I think you hit the nail on the head. They're still pushing the Droid pretty hard right now, and it can pretty naturally slide into the middle tier once the Droid X and Droid 2 hit the market.
@Shivv
Droid is just a name licensed from George Lucas. There are Motorola Droids and HTC Droids.
With the Eris leaving... I wonder what HTC will replace it with?
@Michael Scrip
The HTC -Droid- Incredible will replace it. Give it a few months and the specs of the Incredible will look the Eris to you.
@ComeShot
I know about the Incredible... a few of my friends have them.
But what I'm saying is... Motorola will soon have the Droid 2 and the Droid X... and maybe the original Droid for cheap for a while.
HTC will only have the Incredible. I'm wondering if HTC will have a 2nd Android phone soon.
@Michael Scrip
That is all up to Verizon if they want HTC to build another "Droid" phone. Personally, I could care less because I'm not much of a fan of Verizon but HTC does make great android products.
@Michael Scrip You mean apart from the HTC Desire, the Evo 4G, the Aria, the Wildfire and several other phones they have? The Desire is selling very well internationally, as are the other phones, all aimed at different markets and different networks.
@beardoc I believe it was pretty obvious that he meant a 2nd Android phone on Verizon.
@beardoc
I meant HTC devices on Verizon... since I called out the Droid 2, Droid X and Droid Incredible by name.
My point is... Verizon seems to be the place for Android phones... and HTC only has one right now.
@Michael Scrip The Evo is selling quite well, plus there's everywhere else overseas.
@Michael Scrip
They have a few others. Heard of the EVO or Nexus One?
@Kyle P once again, read carefully. He meant htc androids on verizon. It'd be pretty hard for anyone who follows android news to have missed the nexus 1 and evo 4G.
@Michael Scrip

DROID SCORPION
@snowrid3r wtf are you talking about?
Thanks for tip credit...
@therockr92 a lot of people probably sent it in...
Youd die before engadget gives you credit for a tip. You'd be lucky to get a "thanks to everyone who sent this in" line
I once got a tip credit. I basically camped on the alienware website knowing they were launching the i7 m11x, and that Dell always updates websites at 6am eastern (4pm where I'm at).
I only knew they were launching it because engadget reported it launched in Singapore, then it launched in the uk and engadget updated the page accordingly. So I stayed up and tipped engadget the very second the page updated.
That, my friends, is geek insanity right there.
@MastrCake
Stupid camper.
I kick campers on my clan's CoD 4 server.
Now THAT is some geek insanity. :P
Haha two of my boys have this phone. EVO FTW!!!
Hopefully HTC has something else in the pipe for Verizon the fall though. Seriously, you can't even get an Incredible, and it's about to be overshadowed tomorrow by two new Moto devices. Then you have the choice between the amazing Imagio, and the phenomenal Ozone.
Awesome Verizon lineup HTC...good planning.
Time to make way for the next wave of smart phone. The real super smart phones 1ghz+ 4+ inch screen.... and android 2.2
@newjaruz -1 for 4 inch screen. Not everybody wants something the size of the EVO or the even larger Droid X.
HTC could blow the Droid 2 out of the water by simply taking the Incredible, and slapping a Touch Pro2 QWERTY on it.
@newjaruz
noone wants a 4+ inch screen. also noone wants android, it literally looks like it was drawn in ms paint.
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
Is noone am or pm? Oh wait...
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly who is this noone person and why do they want so much?
@ckeegan
HTC Incredible with a Touch Pro2 keyboard?
Oh, I'd definitely buy that!
Oh crap... I just drooled on my keyboard.
@TheOneAndOnlyJH exactly, but what'd be even better would be the more battery efficient 1.5ghz dual core Snapdragon with the Touch Pro2 QWERTY. Moto has had to opportunities to do a keyboard on the level of the Touch Pro2, and they've failed both times. You'd think it would be a no-brainer for HTC, and I can't imagine that Moto put any kind of QWERTY exclusivity in place with Verizon.
A friend of my got one of these second hand recently and honestly it is a damn fine phone.
Sure it doesn't have impressive specs or anything like that, but it was snappy and responsive, wonderful size, great screen.
If you put out a droid Eris that was free on contract i think you would really have something.
@mulderc Droid Eris is free on contract at every store in my town. SD
Like the article said, I think they're getting rid of it to start promoting the regular droid, droid 2 & droid x. I think people realize now that $50 vs 150$ isn't a huge difference when you have to sign a 2 yr contract. I bet they'll drop the regular droid to 100, droid 2/incredible to 150, and droid x to 200.
@supraped69
Why would the Droid 2 be cheaper than the Droid X?
@JXCGunrunna because the droid x will be the heavy hitting flagship phone while the droid 2 will just be an upgrade to the original. It would similar to when verizon released the original droid at $200 and the droid eris at $100(or was it $150? Not sure)
@JXCGunrunna the droid 2 < droid x?
I'm pretty sure the droid 2 has very similar specs to the droid, but with a better keyboard? Correct me if I'm wrong
@supraped69 Well, improved keyboard (supposedly), but some have said it's a half step up. Unconfirmed to some extent, but I would consider the 1ghz processor (compared to 550mhz) and 512mb of RAM (compared to 256) to be the more major upgrades.
Guess we may find out more in 133 minutes.
