Android 2.2 Froyo source code available today
It's still not hitting the bulk of Nexus Ones as far as we can tell, but for what it's worth, Google has unleashed the source code for Android 2.2 today, which is a solid sign that the code's been bulletproofed to the Open Handset Alliance's satisfaction and is ready for deployment across a number of phones from different manufacturers and carriers. It's still ultimately up to a bunch of gatekeepers in suits to decide when various models will get the upgrade, but this is basically zero day -- so let the countdown begin.

@dxdragon
Hmmm Just Windows on your PC? With PC's out there running XP, Vista and Win7 right now??
@dxdragon it would be nice to have some idea of when the os/hardware will be on its way, but frankely I would much prefer them to be released when they are ready and not when they are due to be out... just imho
@dxdragon arbitrary release dates given by CEOs need to stay on a specific schedule have in the past resulted in some big disapointments (remember the last gen ipod touch camera?)
I'm not saying other CEOs are better (Samsung for one has set the bar VERY high with his claims for the end of this year) but It is not always in the best intrest of those involved to be so rigid
@zapote21 Last time I checked if it meets the specs a user can upgrade from XP to Vista to Win7.... And this is more like SP 1 (for any of those major releases) only being available on brand new builds with existing machines unable to get the update.
@I Fling Poo Actually there are over 6 updates per year for the iPhone some add new features others are bug fixes only.
I wonder what changes they'll make to Sense in 2.2, as far as looks go.
My Evo patiently awaits...
I hope they develop a source code for the samsung moment.
Just got my Nexus One yesterday - still 2.1 out of the box, and for the time being.
I hope gingerbread sense type UI that can be used on all devices, and we can finally cut out the manufacture tweaks which slow down releases.
I hope that the delay of the Dell Streak US release was because of this. Drop Froyo on it and release it!!!
Stealing Apple's OS thunder. Seriously cant wait to have this plus Cyanogen on my N1.
Hell yeah
Not hurry up my evo wants an update
Ohhhhhhh I get it now!!! Froyo = Frozen Yogurt, duhhh. Boy do I feel slow...
CM 6 out tonight!! WOOHOOOOOOOO
It not up to anyone except the user. if your manufacturer does not support the upgrade then just root. It is a relatively simple process and will usually make your phone perform better.
I'm sure Verizon will wait until Droid 2 and Droid X have been out a couple of weeks before updating the less expensive models so as not to cannibalize the sales of their new flagship Android phones.
I don't understand the people on here debating android vs iphone. It is only a phone. The phone someone else is using should not be of any importance to you. Perhaps you should see a doctor. Sounds like a personality disorder to me. Android is for me because I find it more useful, but if you prefer iOS, be my guest and enjoy.
@unf2011 I agree completely.
I have an Android because it works for me. But to be clear...if something that worked better for ME came along (iPhone or not) I'd be the first to toss my N1 in the trash.
If you use an and are so close minded that you cant look at another and recognize that it's a pretty cool device, then you're just a waste of everyone's time.
What exactly is the end-game for all the fanboys/fandroid folks? you want all the opposing phones wiped out? Not sold anymore? hauled into a room and burned?
It's the competition that drives the innovation folks...
@unf2011 I'd rather rave over what I prefer, so companies that are not on top would get more out of it. Sure it's each person's own preference, but I'd rather not see one company dominate. Apple is already controlling their software requirements and specifications for developers. It could only get worst, if consumers would look at the product before buying.
Apple makes solid products, but I switched to Google mainly for better control over my Android with Google Voice, the OS, and their bells and whistles that they keep on giving. It takes a year before Apple releases something new, and even then they only want to release a few features, after technology has shown to have much more. I'd say they are only milking the consumers for more. They dropped update support for their 2G iPhone, which I know still has much more potential.
The only thing I do want to see is better music management in Froyo or see developers actually make an aesthetically pleasing solid music player.
@stabbedintheface
End game?
That iOS doesn't become the next Windows, and thus a monopoly.
The idea of having Apple/Steve Jobs dictate what I can and can't do with a phone I bought scares me.
Trolls who rant about other devices are either Jealous or Envious. Those who enjoy what they have anticipate it's evolution and don't go on competitors blog sites and whine. Please do yourself a favor and gtfo. Would you go into a starbucks and screm the coffee bean has better slop than this horse crap? No.
Fools....
I just came!
Froyo for Hero!!!!! Plz
I think it's funny that a comment will be down-ranked into oblivion...but there will be 30 responses to it.
froyo is still no IOS 4
@FrankDTank
Is it supposed to be? Is IOS3 supposed to be FROYO? Is Mac supposed to be PC? Is an apple supposed to be an orange?
Stop acting like your phone is your religion.
@FrankDTank
And thank goodness for that!
Glad to see the source code is released. Hopefully within a few weeks, Cyanogen will have worked his magic and created a new rom for us to enjoy.
Just another year then it might be on my SE. X10i FFS
keep it comin...
Here is what HTC says about putting out Froyo on their Android phones:
http://www.androidcentral.com/most-2010-htc-android-phones-will-get-froyo-2010
Here's the official word:
[...] if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet.
So exactly whatever the "2nd half" means it can't come soon enough I'm sure.
@Alpine80s
I can deal with this... thanks for posting.
-sent from my EVO as the old Apple sits and watches jealously from the bookshelf.
Get on it Pete! Let's see some BBv1.0!
One of our members on XDA claims to have gotten a notification for an OTA update... but he was rooted running a Froyo FRF72 based ROM, so installation failed. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709171

have fun
As pointed out by Touzoku, http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-FRF83-from-FRF50.38d66b26.zip
Just note that you'd have to have a 'stock' recovery AND the official FRF50 on your superphone. Otherwise it wouldn't work. So if you've a non-stock nexus like me, you're stuck waiting for a repacked version of FRF83, so don't bother trying. FRF72 users are stuck too :-P
