Motorola Droid X first (official) hands-on and unboxing! Update: video!
Yeah, we kind of already saw this phone, but if you don't tell Motorola and Verizon, we won't. We just got our hands on an official, final Droid X at the NY launch event, and it tastes just as sweet. Here are a few notes:
- It's built of basically the same material as the Droid, but there's something almost kind of "taut" about the phone, where when you thwack it with a finger it resounds like a drum. The phone vibration seems to work on this same principle, giving it much less of the typical buzz (in the funky, cheap sense) you expect.
- There are three mics, and in video mode you can select between "scenes" based on which mic you want to use: outward facing for regular shoots, inward facing for narration. The third mic is up top for noise cancellation during calls.
- Yeah, there's not kickstand, but the EVO 4G really does seem chunky up against the Droid X, and the camera bulge on the latter is not annoying at all.
- PHYSICAL BUTTONS.
- You get your choice between Swype and Motorola's multitouch keyboard, which is really pretty great. We were typing at speed within a few seconds of using it.
- You can tell that the processor is fast, but the UI still has a jerky quality to it -- it's not totally fluid. We'd say that's more of an Android thing, though.
- The new version of Motoblur is much, much more attractive than before -- the widgets are sleeker, smaller, and less in your face. You can also resize them, and they rearrange themselves somewhat intelligently.

Looking good. This may be the phone I have been waiting for on Verizon.
@bob1000
Here's a repeat of my post.
DROID X = WIN
Goodbye my iPhone.
I support both phones.
I JUST LIKE DROID MORE. URGH.
@bob1000 if i have 2 droids, can i combine them in like, a garbage compactor to make one of tehse? i sure hope so.
@bob1000 Yeah, I may be picking this phone up in July. May hold off for Froyo tho. This is one hot device.
@bob1000
Man, consumers have so many options now! Incredible, Droid X, Evo, iPhone4 and more to come! It's a great time to be in the market. Can't wait to pre-order this!
@huskie fluff
X+X =/= X^2
@bob1000 I'm mixed on this phone. For one, I'm looking to see the OMAP3640 @ 1GHz goodness spank all of the overhyped Snapdragon phones. But I'm not excited about seeing MotoBlur on this phone, effectively reducing its potential of receiving timely updates. Of course, if you root this phone, then all bets are off. Pick it up FTW!
@Revolutionary
-1 for blabbering your crap again!
@bob1000 I hope they don't forget about the Droid Incredible...I WANT FROYO!!
@Kamil R but :( i want to combine my 2 motorola droids, make a droid x :(
@Kamil R Don't you mean "2xDroid =/= Droid^x"?
@vlad786 What crap? He said he likes both phones but prefers Android. Is that illegal all of a sudden?
@sooperengadget12
Unless I misunderstood, Motoblur is going to be hidden from the user by default.
"Sanjay says the device will run 2.1 at launch with Motoblur, but it's been "hidden" from the consumer at startup and setup. "
@danlindeman
Agreed. I have 2 1/2 months to drop my pre-paid phone and get a good one before I go off to college, and I have no idea what to get T_T
@bob1000
Meh, no matter how hard they try no one can get the packaging as right as Apple. Seriously look at all those booklets! Also how many more company names can we cram on there. I think they forgot the battery, screen, camera, and memory manufactures.
@High umm, you must be high. who gives a shit about a box? and who reads the freaken instruction? are you seroiusly saying that iphones are better, because the box is nice? go back under your rock.
@sooperengadget12 agreed. I hope blur can be disabled. I don't want people's Facebook updates and tweets all over my homescreen bothering me. That is what apps were made for.
@danlindeman You forgot to mention the MyTouch slide. I mean, really if you're mentioning all the flagship phones out there, you'd be remiss not to mention this little monster. It eats pieces of shit for breakfast.
@bob1000 This may be the Droid you're looking for
Where are the jabs?... "No 4G, Verizon plans are more than Sprint, no front facing camera" etc.
@bob1000
I want dual facing cameras. I would get this in a heartbeat if it did...
@danlindeman
All the phone you mentioned except the iphone are Android OS powered phones. They are the same thing. And they all end up discontinued within months of being released.
@bob1000
I love all the new phones and options that are now hitting with the Providers. HTC and Motorola are really setting themselves up nicely with Android.
I am a current VZW Customer and as much as I want to grab say the HTC Incredible or possibly the Droid X, my upgrade is is early 2011 and by then, there should be some LTE (4G) Options!
@bob1000
Yay for Verizon. I'm still waiting to replace my MyTouch on Tmobile... Seriously, where's the love?
@huskie fluff you'll need 10 because it is the x
@Revolutionary
Its funny how your comment goes from highly ranked to downranked to neutral. Engadget addicts who've read your same comments in older articles don't really find it entertaining anymore.
so please stop it with your rant :)
@bob1000 : DROIDoesn't have hardware keyboard anymore? Sorry, but with that ad campaign from 09... kinda hypocritical? downrank me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that one of the whole big points of the original DROID that drew people to it from all the other phones like the Nexus, iPhone, Eris, Evo, etc.?
@danlindeman Yes! you are absolutely correct there are so many choices of high end smart phones on all carriers except T-mobile. They are lagging behind like usual offering kiddy like phones that new my touch 3G is a toy compared to all the top notch phones the competitors are offering...
@bob1000 I want this thing NOW!
@bob1000 Really, this is the phone you've been waiting for?
- No Front camera.
- No Froyo on launch
- No Flash on launch
But hey, we get Ninja f*cking blur. Yay.
Also, that bulge may not feel awkward in hand, but it sure will inside your jeans.
@blenderman345 ummm there is another phone coming out with a keyboard
@Lord Vader +1
I vote this for the single greatest comment on engadget.com EVER.
@TareG
Stop talking about the bulge in my jeans.
@danlindeman All terrible choices... DroidX/EVO have android issues, iPhone has lockdown issues/Steve Jobs runs the company. I'm waiting for android to mature a bit more and have better optimization techniques.
@bravokiloromeo That'd be awesome.
You need a job in R&D.
@scorpeo
Both are Driod......We're all in the same gang, LOL
@TareG
-Don't care about/need
-No biggie, can wait
-No biggie, can wait
@blenderman345
This Is The Droid X, Which Is A New Addition To The Droid Line Up And An Altogether Different Phone Layout. The Keyboard That Is On The Droid, Will See An Updated Revision On The Droid 2.
@Eroded Fallacy
I agree... There is no way id buy the mytouch... Haaaaa U would think since they were the first to get android they would be rolling out some better phones... Haaa guess not..
@bob1000 This phone is horrible. No troll!
@bob1000 Yeah those are all removable widgets. They aren't permanent.
@bob1000
Digging the re-sizable windgets. That should be standard in Android phones. How, just how can the Joshua say Iphone 4 is the best right now in a review that should be objective. Clearly thats just a biased opinion.
@Lord Vader
This is the Droid I'm looking for. Too bad I'm on AT&T...
@TareG
Suddenly the front facing camera is needed, but nobody still uses it. LOLlipop
@bob1000 Wow, love the screen, just how snappy it is. And the display is gorgeous. Please run some videos on this phone. And only 4 minutes of video review, it is not fair for the Droid X. Please demo the NFS app to test its performance.Ah, I can only dream until good ole moto releases the GSM version.
You can tell that the processor is fast, but the UI still has a jerky quality to it -- it's not totally fluid. We'd say that's more of an Android thing, though.
This is because Android does not use GPU acceleration much, while the iphone does, which is why it's much smoother.
Google better fix this for Gingerbread, especially if they improve the graphics on the UI!
Dear Engadget,
WHAT AWESOME CAMERA was used in the making of that video???
Sincerely,
Engadget Community
@huzzlehoff
Nobody uses it, cuz it's only on 2 US phones, and one of them can only talk to the same kind of phone!
@bob1000
I dunno, it looks somehow plasticky on this video.
@mobilehavoc
I think u made the mistake buyin Incredible
