Motorola Droid X for Verizon official: July 15 for $200
There was little about the mighty Droid X that we hadn't already known -- but for what it's worth, Verizon and Motorola have teamed up today to expose everything we want to know about the next Android beast for Big Red. The 4.3-inch 854 x 480 handset features Android 2.1 with an all-new UI skin, a TI OMAP3630 processor galloping along at 1GHz, HDMI out, 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and 720p video capture, and 8GB of onboard storage with expansion of up to 32GB (you get a 16GB card in the box) all stuffed in a package 9.9mm thick. Software wise, you've also got an integrated mobile hotspot with support for up to 5 devices connected over WiFi, DLNA support, and a legit multitouch keyboard with Swype built-in. It won't launch with Froyo, but that'll come later in the Summer as an upgrade along with Flash 10.1 support; the phone will be available on July 15 for $199.99 on contract after rebate, while the mobile hotspot service will run $20 extra a month with a 2GB cap and 5 cent per MB overage (data consumed on the phone itself is unlimited). Mirroring AT&T's move with the iPhone 4, all Verizon customers with upgrade dates in 2010 will be pulled up so they're eligible for the Droid X as soon as it's available. Follow the break for the full press release.
JULY 2010: DROID X BY MOTOROLA LANDS ON THE NATION'S LARGEST & MOST RELIABLE 3G NETWORK
DROID X Delivers More Browsing, More Connectivity, Personal HD Video and Enterprise Features – All on a 4.3" Widescreen
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., and LIBERTYVILLE, Ill. – Verizon Wireless, the company with the nation's largest and most reliable wireless 3G network, and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), a pioneer in the mobile industry, today unveiled DROID X by Motorola. DROID X does more with ultra high-speed Web browsing; a fast 1GHz processor; 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities; loads of memory; intuitive social messaging; Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 ready; and access to Android Market™, which has more than 65,000 applications, along with a host of unique Verizon Wireless applications such as NFL Mobile, Skype mobile™, V CAST Video, EA Need for Speed Shift™ and more.
"Nine months ago, we made a commitment to our customers to bring the openness of Android to the Verizon Wireless network," said John Stratton, executive vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "Since then, we have introduced the top-selling Android phone in the marketplace today – the DROID by Motorola. DROID X takes that commitment to another level with exclusive content, faster processing speeds, and, of course, the reliability of our network."
Sanjay Jha, co-chief executive officer of Motorola and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobile Devices and Home business added, "Motorola designed DROID X to push the extreme limits of Android innovation, and enable you to do even more with your mobile device. We are breaking down barriers so that you can experience the Web the way it was meant to be and create, share and view content like never before, either in your hand or in your home. Enterprise users will also find DROID X appealing with features including push e-mail and live widgets for e-mail and calendar updates."
DROID X gives customers a 4.3-inch high-resolution screen for viewing the latest movies and video from BLOCKBUSTER On Demand® presented by V CAST Video, the newest addition to the Verizon Wireless V CAST application, which also includes access to favorite TV shows. The DROID X video capabilities let customers capture spontaneous fun, combining a dual-flash, 8-megapixel camera, HD camcorder, as well as DLNA and HDMI connectivity to download, stream and share personal HD content.
DROID X customers will also receive Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 with an over-the-air update in the latter half of the summer. With the update, the Flash Player will allow mobile users to experience hundreds of sites with rich applications and content inside the browser, including games, animations, rich Internet applications (RIAs), data presentations and visualizations, ecommerce, music, video, audio and more.
"It has been an exciting time for Android momentum and global consumer adoption since the announcement of DROID by Motorola nine months ago," said Andy Rubin, vice president of engineering for Google. "There are 160,000 new Android-powered devices activated daily and Android Market has grown to over 65,000 applications. Plus later this summer, Verizon Wireless and Motorola will update all the DROID by Motorola phones to the latest 2.2 software. For customers, this means great new features and improved browser performance. For developers, this will provide new tools such as cloud-to-device messaging and enhanced enterprise functionality."
"We are excited about full Flash support coming to the DROID X and other devices from Motorola," said Shantanu Narayen, president and chief executive officer of Adobe. "Flash Player 10.1, which is one of Adobe's most anticipated releases ever, has been redesigned from the ground up to deliver the kind of highly engaging experiences that consumers now expect from their mobile devices."
Once updated to Android 2.2, business customers will find DROID X offers the features that turn the device into a workhorse with support for both Exchange and Gmail™ for business. Corporate users can enjoy push delivery of e-mail; live widgets that stream messages to the home screen; filter widgets to differentiate work and home e-mail; corporate directory and Global look-up along with a unified calendar for Enterprise and sync with Google Calendar™. Security protocols allow remote password control and wipe via Exchange server.

DROID X = WIN
bye iphone.
@Revolutionary. -1 They are both very good phones, they both have their ups and downs. Neither are going away soon
@Revolutionary
How many times have we heard that before?
@MrT
Will you announce the regular droid getting a new looking box?
@Revolutionary MR T knows what he's talkin' bout fool :-D
@Revolutionary
Why trolls always get to be the first? So much dedication! Respect I guess?
@Revolutionary The Droid X is too large though to fit comfortably in most people's hands though and the iphone4 has better resolution and battery life, apart from that yes the droidx is better, but you can't call it an iphone4 killer or anything like that when some important features are worse than it. I'm sure by the end of the year there will be phones that beat or equal the iphone4 in all areas but until then its neck and neck for quite a few phones for the title of best phone.
@Revolutionary
Fat chance, the Samsung :) just came out. How can you not love a phone with such a pervy suggestive name? Bye Droid X, iPhone!
@Revolutionary
There are many great phones out right now, and probably many more to come, that go toe to toe with the iPhone 4. Even the lesser Android phones on Verizon like the original Moto Droid and Droid Incredible hold their own rather well. That's the thing about Android phones, no one phone to rule them all! We need to stop THIS from happening to the Smartphone market:

@Revolutionary
Ownage
@hajj3
The public don't give a shit about the resolution
They see a big screen and go OOOHHH
THE IPHONE had a tiny screen and a crapton of bezel
@MrFluffyThing
Really? The Incredible grouped into the "lesser Android phones" category? It is barely two months old, and nearly the same specs as the X; so please, lets be realistic here. The original Droid is older, but no slouch either (not really much a "lesser").
@Revolutionary
Droid X = Crap - smell;
Motorola = "epic" + " " + "fail";
@hajj3 There are certain features the iPhone doesn't even have. Honestly until the iPhone gets some sort of serious notification system I don't see how anyone claims its the top of anything. Just look at the review here on Engadget. The guy shows off multitasking with the messenger in the background but the convo can go on with you not even knowing anybody is saying anything. Theres no notifications. Its amazing how people swear up and down iPhone are so easy to use and miss glaring usability flaws. I guess when you're used to using something limited you don't notice.
funniest post ever rofl
@Revolutionary
isnt is possible hes saying goodbye to his current iphone? and not saying iphone is going to die?
calm down fanboys..
@Madcat The mere fact that Motorola announced that this phone will get the 1GHz OMAP3640 chip alone makes it king of the heap. Those in the Android community already know that the DROID's 3430 is clock for clock on par with the Snapdragon (both built on the old 65nm architecture). The 3640 is built on the newer 45nm technology and you KNOW if the 3430 is on par, then the 3640 @ 1GHz is going to SPANK the Snapdragon chip and hand it its butt for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The chipset in the DROIDX is the big announcement here. But not to be dismissed is FWVGA (854x480) across 4.3" LCD screen is going to be the best 4+" screen on the market, hands down.
The DROID X and the iPhone 4 are two VERY different devices. They should not, are not in the same category. The iPhone 4 is a sexy small portable superphone and the DROID X is a beastly mini-tablet with Android. Need we say anymore??
@Blaque14K You keep saying it has no notification system. That's not accurate.
@deadaim
YES, OMG.
YOU GOT ME RIGHT.
I'm saying goodbye to my iPhone.
Both phones are great.
Please calm down. I support both phones.
@AdmiralKlingon
Oh yeah, what's your definition of troll?
People who go against you?
@rutter9
No because hardly anyone gives a shit about Droid
@earthlingdave no, he said it doesn't have a *good* notification system.
what idiot thought having a giant popup interrupt whatever you're doing because you got a text was a good idea?
@sooperengadget12
I never said the X didn't have a faster processor - my beef is with marking a two month old phone down to a "lesser" status when the only main difference is a CPU and screen size (and sorry, I will take 3.7" AMOLED over 4.3" LCD; The LCD is nice, but the colors and viewing angles on the AMOLED cant be beat".
Also, its hard to say that a bigger screen makes it better. I prefer the more compact phone with a great resolution, but it will vary for everyone.
Sure, the incredible is second, but only just in my book.
LOLLLLLLLLLL!!! Verizon charging for wifi tethering???
Ummm no.
@Revolutionary
Android fanboys unite!!
The size is gonna be a problem for this phone...the EVO 4G is already quite a handful and this ups the size even further.
Seriously though, they might have to start going with a more LG ultra-widescreen kind of approach with these screens because a super-wide phone is uncomfortable to hold, particularly with a single hand holding and tapping things on-screen.
@rutter9 lol, engadget = iPhail
@Revolutionary when else had I heard of a Phone reportadly getting an update, and flash? Hmm? (Hint hint: starts with d and ends in roid)
@Apple Fan
Every time someone switches from Iphone. That seems to be quite often really.
@tekdemon
I want the larger screen because I actually use my phone for work and that includes opening spreadsheets and documents. The big screen is so much better for that. I'm slowly going blind trying to use tiny screens.
@MrT I agree.
@tekdemon No, you misunderstand a multiphone strategy. Moto/HTC etc all invest in a platform, then make 10-20 form factors wrapped around that platform so people have choice in size, screen type, camera options, etc. The only one that trys to do a one size fits all, and hence the only one who would care about making the size "right" by your standards is Apple. There are tons of people who want a bigger phone (myself included). Plenty of women store their phoens in their purses and hence really don't care if its a little bigger if they get a better experience with the device.
@Revolutionary
If I were to get a touch screen phone I would get the iPhone and not one of these phones. They are too big, I don't see the purpose.
Why is narayen there? Will this ship with full flash support? Or will we have to wait until Froyo?
@DoctarPeppar I believe it will come with froyo
@AlienSix
Nope, it's launching with 2.1. Froyo update will come later in the summer.
@DoctarPeppar I'm more interested to see how much ram this puppy has...
Will they be selling pants with larger pockets as an accessory?
@Rick James
I'm sure it's 512...
Wait, does this Phone mean the EVO 4G is already outdated?
@Joao No, I'm sure it'll be elastic pocket expanders. It'll also come with a potato to put in your pants--just make sure to put the potato in the front of your pants, not the rear.
@MrT Nah, to me 4G ability still trumps raw performance. The Droid X should be light years faster than the 4G, but I'd rather have faster network speeds.
Besides the $20/month tethering hotspot deal is very disappointing...
@AlienSix
Froyo it's not ready yet tha's why it's not launching with it.
@MrT in which way does this make the evo outdated..cuz i dont see it
@jayv1717
First, the screen supports millions of colors, instead of 16-bit color (yikes)...second, it's probably got better build quality since it's not made by htc (hey..just stating facts :P), third, it won't have a 30fps graphics limit :)
@MrT I'm not even sure this phone beats the Evo...I mean its similar but still lacks some of the features the Evo has plus its bigger (not screen, size) Also, will cost more money on Verizon.
@DoctarPeppar the colors are just fine even at 16m..the build quality is perfect except for the ones that got stuck with those stupid screen issues..but mines is as sturdy as it can get..and the 30 fps is fixed..so it seems like your just nit picking
@jayv1717
Nit picking owns!
Without nitpicking there would be no progress.
@DoctarPeppar i could easily talk about the lack of front facing camera the 2gb data limit(yikes)..the 3g speeds the plans cost more money the lack of a kickstand(with screens this big its very handy)..sense vs motoblur(yikes)..but if i mention all that i would just be nit picking too..honestly i welcome all android devices im sure it'll be another great addition iphone's dominance is all but over..android ftfw!!!!!!!!!!!!!
