Hopefully when Gingerbread is released the handset makers won't need to cover the phones with themes/skins. That'll insure us timely updates! On a side note......COMON HTC plzzzz release froyo for EVO fast!
HTC doesn't want to make the same products as Motorola, and Motorola doesn't want to make the same product as Samsung, or Sony, or LG. The skins might not be for you, but maybe they work for a lot of the population that honestly has no idea about Android versions and honestly don't care. They just want to use Facebook and send tweets and access a calendar.
Vendor differentiation will never go away. Hopefully they can mature the code such that it is modular enough that adapting to new foundations is not such a big ordeal.
@dforbes I get the idea that the Droid X is the first to solve this problem. All reviews are saying the new Blur is like skin and widgets. Writing new dialer and contact apps to integrate with social networking shouldn't be hard and it shouldn't keep the OEM's from getting updates out faster. Poor Apple fanboys won't know what to say when everybody can get updates quick.
@jazam2010 as an evo owner myself, i can't wait till we can get froyo on our devices. but truthfully, it's gonna take HTC a long time. there's no way they'll get froyo running on the evo within weeks. if you've played around with a lot of the roms after you (likely rooted) your phone, you'll notice that HTC Sense does NOT play nicely with JIT, which is native in froyo. in fact, you'll get bootloops if JIT is enabled with Sense. they'll basically have to completely rewrite major parts of the Sense code. which could take awhile. good thing there's already an almost completely working froyo build on xda!
Sony's just released a 15.5-inch addition to its VAIO S Series that not only adds a crucial bit of extra display acreage, but also bumps things up to a full 1080p.

@dforbes I'm liking that idea too.
