Samsung Behold II finally gets Android 1.6 update
Yes, yes, we know you'd rather get Eclair or Froyo -- but sometimes you've got to be happy with what you've got, and this is one of those times. As far as we can tell, Samsung hasn't budged on its commitment to sunset the Behold II's upgrade path with Donut, but at least 1.6 is finally trickling into the hands of owners this week via a rolling over-the-air update that should wrap up on the 25th. There are a few bug fixes in the mix, too -- so unless you've got a rooted Behold II running 2.2 already, you probably want in on this action. Or... you know, dump this inadequately-supported piece for something running 2.1 out of the box.

Lmao wtf? 1.6 still exist?
@ComboBreaker
I can see why 1.6 would still exist. It's reasonably supported and Google releases their updates for it. Some phones might not handle more than it. I can't figure out why anything would still be running 1.5. That OS should be gone now. Google doesn't touch it
@ComboBreaker Wait a second they released a 2nd version of the behold with 1.5? I didn't know about this! And now there only updating it to 1.6? Idiots!
@Dafrety
Did you know: In Japan there are 1.6 devices to be released public for first time in coming days.
@ComboBreaker I am still on 1.5 because HTC is not able to update my HTC Magic. This sucks. No this really sucks and is a shame for HTC.
Oh well, at least it's better than 1.5. Hopefully people learn that Samsung pulls this sort of BS in the future, and alter their purchases in the future. Hopefully Samsung will figure out "WAT HAPPEN?" and why people aren't buying their crap anymore.
@Dafrety They already know since their have less than 5% of the marketshare even though they are the 2nd biggest OEM, part of this is hardware, or lack thereof, but they've also been disappointed with the sales of devices they've put out.
They'ved talked about this a lot and they've been making software hires for the better part of a year, some for Bada of course but not all of them, in some ways they seem more excited about WP7 because it'll cater to their strengths but if their Wave or Galaxy S sell well they will get better support than anything in the past (I can't qualify that as meaning 12-24 months or what, which is still unfortunate).
lol at Samsung. This is exactly why they'll never get close to HTC et al in handset market share. @Samsung Even if your handsets were good (they're not), your customer support sucks and leaving your customers behind in the dust while you run to introduce another not-smartphone isn't the way to gain share.
@Dafrety
This is enough to probably strike them off my list.
I would say yay, but it's 1.6. 1.6?
Seriously Samsung?
Lawsuit time.
Samsung needs to learn that they can not offer this quality (shit quality) level of support any longer.
@DoctarPeppar For the longest time windows mobile phones were like that. The OS you bought was the OS you'd always have. It's quite reasonable for a manufacturer to not bother updating their phone operating systems. And I think it's also quite reasonable to not buy phones from said manufacturers unless they commit or show implied commitment to keeping pace with a fast-paced operating system.
@longcat
It's not quite so reasonable anymore. The smartphone market has changed. People expect to get at least basic support for their purchase after buying it, especially when it continues to be sold.
Samsung doesn't want to keep up with phones that have lesser hardware than their product. Honestly? Too damn bad for them. At the very least, they should have stuck to their promise of 2.x instead of pulling the rug out from everyone who believed them.
@longcat
The difference here is that Samsung originally marketed the phone by saying that it would be upgradeable to at least 2.0.
@longcat
Regardless of what you are saying, Samsung _specifically_ said they would provide an update in a video that they uploaded to the web...they then pulled the video, and are now saying that the device will not get updated.
@longcat
Also I thought I would just mention that while you are correct, Samsung is probably one of the worst companies when it comes to support. The thing is, their mobile division is so huge that alot of the "satelites" just don't communicate with eachother...and alot of times they will advertise and market products \ features that just do not exist or were removed because of bugs or engineering issues...I remember the time when they advertised the i8910 at an Indian mobile trade show as having a "1ghz" processor....the device had been released in other parts of the world a few months prior to this, and the spec was completely false -- but a few people went up to their reps and asked them and they confirmed it...this lead to even more confusion because alot of people who had already purchased the device thought Samsung came out with a new revision with a faster CPU...needless to say after all the news sites picked up the story, they admitted the spec was a mistake a few weeks later...this kind of thing goes on ALL the time with them though; it's downright embarassing that they are the #2 phone maker in the world.
Atleast they're keeping it up to date
@tklr08
... Ye-Yeah. Up to date, that's it. PUHAHAHAH! Sorry. Good joke.
@tklr08 Either that's totally inaccurate, or up-to-date has a new meaning.
@tklr08 lol! up to date. Hilarious
This 1.6 update to the Samsung Behold will kill the HTC Evo and disarm many iPhone sales.
@ComeShot in your mouth
:D
@DefPoet
no u
@DefPoet
wait, I though that was my job.
Whatever you do! do not get a Samsung. Man the suck.
Yeah well... does anybody actually own one of these that cares what software it is?!
@hammydbest i own one, and i must say while the sales suck, and the touchwiz ui sucks, i must say the hardware is pretty solid.
my phonw is rooted, running 1.6 already without the touchwiz crap
@engadget: as far as i know, the samsung behold II is fully capable of running 2.2 but while the phone is rooted, no ones got it to run 2.2 yet.
someone prove me wrong.
Wow the 1.6 update? That's amazing! Lol...I didn't even know people bought this phone
This is why I got an Evo rather than a galaxy s pro. At least I can count on HTC releasing a current update within 6 months
@DefPoet *awaits hero users with pitchforks*
such an ugly phone.. finally with galaxy s they have a good looking phone with android..
Meh, I wouldn't be holding my breath for 2.1
that is just sad 1.6 i rather root the phone(if possible) and update to a 2.1
@remytech tou can root but no chance of running anything greater than 1.6
a not up-to-date update?
makes me scared about buying a Samsung Android phone, even if it's nice like the Galaxy S and S Pro
@qrius
Don't buy Samsung if you want any software updates.
us motorola cliq users are forever trapped on 1.5 ... i dont think motorola has any intentions of updating us.
@darthgault
You are apparently getting it.
http://www.linux-magazine.com/Online/News/Motorola-Announces-Android-Update-Timetable
oh god that phone is such crap
Im surprised no one has rooted this phone. I think I might of read of someone trying. Reports of people running 2.1 and 2,2 on G1's.
@InfDaMarvel
Samsungs drivers are CLOSED SOURCE, so it is not possible to root and run > 1.6 on this phone.
@blakeh
It's possible to root since that's just the kernal it's just impossible to put 2.1 on the phone because there are no drivers for 2.1 since there is no 2.1 for the behold 2. The Behold 2 is the least hacker friendly phone i've used with Android.
@InfDaMarvel The G1 is only running 2.1/2.2 fully since I reverse engineered the camera driver and fixed the source provided from QC (which was incomplete), and cyanogen fixed the video recording functions.
is it 2009?
I think its kinda insulting on Sammy's part to not upgrade this thing further, especially considering that they upgraded the Moment on Sprint to 2.1...
1.6 on this phone really sucks. they should of gave them AT LEAST 2.0, they did promise that. Sad of Samsung to back out on its word.
On the other hand, i don't know why people bought this phone in the first place, the UI is REALLY horrible. A friend of mine has this phone and the whole cube thing is just weird, switiching from screen to screen is also weird. The on-screen keyboard is even bad.
As phones take on the role of a pocket computer more and more, people (who have become used to upgrade cycles) will tend to expect an upgrade. This is especially true for Android phones which enjoy a lot of press regarding the latest features patched into the last update. Who wouldn't want the latest update?
It seems Samsung believes people are happy with what they get out of the box and either don't care to support their customers or don't know how to.
This is pathetic Samsung.
