Swype psyched to be on Droid X, fifty total devices by the end of 2010
Love it or lump it, looks like Swype is making inroads into the mobile space. We've seen it on a few handsets already, and we know how eager the company is to get on the iPhone, but still it doesn't look like Apple's ready to bite. In the meantime, it seems that the company is more than happy to make due with the likes of HTC, Samsung, and Motorola -- the latter having gone with Swype for the Droid X. According to CEO Mike McSherry, this is the company's biggest coup yet, though certainly not the last -- he says to look for the app on some fifty phones by late 2010.

ive never used it, but im not sure if i would like swype
According to Josh Swpye is "too complicated" wonder how easy it is....
Hi all,
Well to me it just looked weird and really didn't think I was going to like it as I was typing on my Streak really well with the word prediction on.
Anyway when they opened up the Beta I thought I'd give it a try and see for myself WOW is all I can say it's only a couple of days now and I think it's great the learning curve really isn't that hard or long and you just keep getting better the more you use it..
Also as I only use my Streak in landscape the keyboard is a really good size and it's just so easy to type with,.Swype really is the future for on screen keyboards it takes it to another level.
So wait, if Swype is going on 50ish devices by the end of 2010, how many freakin' smartphones are coming out between now and the end of the year!?!? If it's that many, Engadget (Mobile) should have WAY more to talk about than the Droid X and on-screen urine.
Apple will likely try to register ISwipe and then buy them out or sue them...
Got it on my Evo as well Takes a little while to get used to, but once you do, you type stupidly fast.
I started using Swype a couple weeks ago when they opened up the Beta, and I must say, I LOVE it.
Okay, I have just given in and downloaded this to give it a go ... totally impressed. Tutorial covered all the things I was unsure about really well. Once I have taught it to swear effectively it will truly become an indispensable addition to my Desire ;)
What happens if I want to do:
typewriter
Can anyone comment on how this works for non Dictionary words. I will give you an example if I want to write ebonics, shwayze...will it keep trying to autocorrect me or will it allow me to fully express my freaky self, haha :)
@SlickVic type the word in the normal way and then hit the space button and the word will be added to the Swype dictionary. You can then Swype it. The Tutorial videos on their site are pretty good with tips on all the best tricks etc.
@SlickVic - You can type out the word once and it will add it to the dictionary for future swyping ..
Swype is missing a crucial, critical feature - the little speakerphone icon so I can use voice recognition as well! It's Android's best feature and I ahve to switch keyboards to use it now.
I have been using it for about a month now, I dont necessarily believe that I am typing "faster" possibly a little, but it is for sure more accurate since it knows the word you are typing rather than just the individual letters.
Good to see Swype starting to get solid traction. (thumbs up)
I need to try it out sometime.
lol @ sad stoned smile in the corner
Got it on the HD2 and absolutely love the software. They did a great job and I can only see it becoming refined over the coming months/years. Apple im sure is waiting to sign a better profit from loading it on the phone ;)
I'm a big fan of swype, but the one problem I have is that on the swype keyboard they removed the microphone button, meaning I lose the option of voice to text unless I change the input type. This is a bit of a downer, since I like using Swype in some cases, and voice to text in others.
Swype has to be the best virtual keyboard software I have used (iPhone 2G/3G/3Gs, S60v5, WM5/6, stock Android, HTC, and etc).
I think it's pointless, people are going to buy into because it's "new". I hope Apple doesn't get that crap. It gives anti-Apple's something to add to their "the iPhone doesn't have" list. It's all in personal preference and personally, it's a waste.
@codepink Yeah, I was totally against that whole T9 texting stuff too. I would much rather press each number a few times for each letter. Crazy kids and their no good fads.
Thats why im gettin a DROID
considering the technology is available on other phones i HIGHLY doubt apple would even consider this. which is really kind of sad and shows exactly what kind of company it is.
@iName Again... This article has nothing to do with apple....
Your comment shows what kind of despo you are....
I refer you to my earlier comment of this having been available on iPhone for the last two years....
The more and more I read this stuff everyday I am becoming convinced there is some sort of weird denial thing on the go, like there is a huge part of the community here more trying to convince themselves that/why try don't like apple, and time and time again the demonstrate an actual ignorance about their products and what's available for them and the actual user experience itself...
I firmly beleive if you were given, say, an iPhone 4 for free, got to know it, you'd secretly fall in love with it....
I am sick of defending the company here but... It's more this bloody irksome attitude I am feeling stronger about as it reflects on me and has me labelled as some kind of brainddead sheep or whatever!
I am extremely careful about spending money,
I am extremely particular about possessions (I don't like to have many)
I am extremely honest about what works best for me, and I am extremely precious about my time
I am also extremely precious about aesthetics and design.
It just so happens that apple satisfy all of that, from te inside an out, been using their stunning machines for ten years now and don't factor in the money, as you get hat you pay for and through the machines, I have made my living and coul not have had such an easy and enjoyable time doing so on a pc.
I get everything I need...
I don't have time in my life to play computer games, I work every waking hour with what I do... But I enjoy that... The apple user experience is such a big part if that... Their creative software is no the same in any other platform and it's a uniformed look that apple users aren't "falling for" bit actually like, because it's well designed!!!
(I do agree that this recent antenna thing is a whoops, and I always hold off and let idiots pay to beta test their version ones)
Anyway....
Most of anything said in detriment against apple, unless fabricated ignorance, is usually the things apple users like about them...
If you buy a designer label suit, that really fits you and suits our style, was expensive but extremely high quality etc etc
Would you take it home and start undoing it's stitches and fucking aroun with it or just hate it because it is made of fabric that won't allow that?
Is it wrong that some people are happy with buying a good fitted suit?
Why must they have to come on a forum about technology and have to deal with this stupid, immature luddite modern redneck attitude!?
Ots great that there is a brand to suit every type of tech fan... I am glad folk are passionate about the future...
Kind of mental to see the pitchforks and torches out so often when basically... Other than the business and shareholder side...
It's not a fight!!!
Ita about everything getting better and better and faster and smaller and more organic and ambient, like this app here, pick your fucking platform and get on with it!!!
Or stand at the side and mock progress...
As I said... A company NOT APPLE developed this software years ago.... Brought it to the iPhone first (because apple were the first to deliver a whole new industry of mobile app commerce thy has since generated millions and has inspired so many) then released it to other platforms that have followed apples lead...
Healthy competition is good when it's healthy...
Hatred and ignorance are never healthy
They just make
You look like a tit.
@omegamale *typos brought to you today by shapewriter for iPhone ;)
So, which was first, Swype or ShapeWriter? :)
