Eldar is just pissed of cos Nokia ridiculed him in that prototype case.
Even though he has some valid points concerning the "bringing nothing new" to the table, Nokia already pointed out that this is an evolutionary release.
I have used the N8, a proto of course, and in my opinion, it is impossible to compare S3 and S60. S3 is that much better. I was blown away when I used it (and I dont LIKE S60).
But, if you are in the business of trashing Nokia no matter what they do, like Eldar, and it is known in the blogosphere that you have a clear support from the competitor, like Eldar and Samsung, then it is more understandable why nothing good ever comes from Nokia, in Eldars opinion.
@Mr w00t What new could they really bring? Symbian is not about flashy interface. And featurewise, what is it really missing? Apps, sure, and QT might not solve the problem... but this is the first QT compatible Symbian device, so it cant gain from that. And non touch symbian, actually has quite a lot of apps... just they didnt win the programmers over for the touch version.
I didnt use to like S0 either, and Ive had problems with my nokia devices. 5th edition is very annoying with the double click/single click thing. But Android, iOS, WP7,WebOS are all flashy interfaces, and featurewise Symbian has been far ahead. And real multitasking instead of flashy interfaces. So ironicly I started to like Symbians thought better after the arrival of those OSes.Less flashy, more performance.
@Mr w00t How can one take Eldar's remarks seriously when he keeps repeating time after time the same mistake, saying that: "The horizontal mode was definitely borrowed from Apple iPhone as it was introduced there for the first time. You can see the album covers and the list of tracks if you tap on an album."
REALLY?! Apple "invented" this media browsing method? I wonder what Sun's "Looking Glass" dev team has to say about this...
@efekt But you know the thing "A lie told often enough becomes the truth"
It is very visible here in the comments in Engadget with people repeating those myths that Mr Jobs creates, like "retina display" WTF does that mean anyway?
Well they could update the icons for a start and add a nice default background because I'd guarantee you that half the complaints would disappear if they did.
The trouble with Symbian^3 is it looks old. It doesn't have the flash of the iPhone's UI or HTC's Sense and I feel Nokia have missed a trick here. Yes, continuity is good, but what would be wrong with having new modernised icons that make it look nice instead of a throwback to the 90's?
To me this is a fundamental error - I think the N8 holds its own against its younger cousins in the phone world but it needs to be presented better. The default icons have to reflect the current Zeitgeist and they simply do not. This may not bother people like me but it will put a lot of people off and Nokia have to be real about this.
I really hope they freshen up the icons by launch (if you must have the old icons then have a classic theme available) because when all else is pretty much equal presentation is everything.
In summary, the old icons are boring, past it and dragging the whole thing down. There is little point in making your hardware up to the minute and gorgeous if your UI looks old and dated.
I agree. To be honest I'm thinking more about the iPhone 4 every day now. It just looks nicer and, frankly, if it's boring after a bit I'm damn sure I can recoup my costs on eBay.
The more I look at that menu the worse it gets. It's just so outdated that I can't bring myself to buy it. Looks like Nokia and I will be parting ways at least until they get MeeGo out. Hopefully some f**kwit in Marketing doesn't balls that up too by insisting upon 'maintaining the brand'.
@MarkAnderson Wrong... For this "flashy" things you will have MeeGo. I think you are underestimating the strategy of Nokia with Symbian+MeeGo.
Symbian3 will be entry phones of tomorrow. Have you thought about price as well? How much will you pay to the operator+apple tax of a iPhone device? With a, for example, N8 someone that does not need a flashy device, yes they do exist, will have maps, music, hdmi out, video editor and blah blah blah much cheaper than what they would get from Apple.
Another thing is, have you used this device? I have and IMHO the transitions look great, cover flow is much better than in iPhone and multitasking cant even be compared (dont even get me started with the camera).
Forget S60, just use S3 and you will see what I am talking about

It is sad but true

And it's so simple to do. That's the tragedy.
@MarkAnderson Artwork.
I have to absolutely agree. I think Symbian is a great phone OS, but for God's sake they have to bring in some new artwork!

But then again I actually like to make calls with my phone so perhaps not an iPhone.

ps. And I also hate S60
