Android 2.2 coming to Droid in 'late July,' Droid X in 'late August?'
Care for some more specificity on when exactly to expect the Droid X to become even awesomer? Well, according to one "very reliable" source over at Droid Forums, we can look forward to a late August landing for Android 2.2 on the X, which will be preceded by a late July delivery on the venerable Droid. Both dates are caveated with an ominous "currently planned" proviso, so don't consider them carved in (Mile)stone, but we're liking the idea of Motorola having both its flagship devices tasting of Froyo by summer's end. There's no mention of the Droid 2, however, which may mean nothing or might suggest that handset's still a fair way away from its release. We shall see.

Welcome to Wednesday's news??
@zepfloyd
im not even joking when i say this, that keyboard is probably one of the top 3 worst keyboards ive ever seen on a phone. That gold d-pad belongs in the 90's. The keys arent even offset. Also can you tell me the point of a d-pad when the phone already has a touchscreen? Such a stupid idea. People who think the droid is good must be on drugs.
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
Ok, I'll play along.
To be honest, I don't think this is a bad keyboard design at all. I use it a lot and it get's the job done. It makes a nice alternative to the on-screen keyboard. The d-pad also serves many a purpose as we've all discussed before. It's helpful with selecting text, navigating hard to reach fields, or just general direction usage.
I guess people who have their own opinion on whether a device is good are both crazy and high.
* downrank and next comment ...
@Mr Blue
im talking about design. It didnt take a genius to figure out the d-pad was a stupid idea, Thats why the droid 2 uses small arrow keys and doesnt take up 20% of the area with a d-pad...arrow keys which could have allowed the keys to be offset. Do you not understand that this design should have been canned for being ugly and non-ergonomic?
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
Actually, I love the physical keyboard on my Droid and am disappointed the Droid 2 lacks the D-pad.
The physical keyboard puts the onscreen keyboard to SHAME. Using just my thumbs, I can type almost as fast on it as I can on a standard keyboard.
Also, in case you hadn't noticed, the screens on smart phones are actually pretty damn small. This often results, especially when on the web, in very tiny fields and buttons that can be anywhere from really difficult to almost impossible to to press using the touchscreen, particularly for someone with big fingers like mine.
I rely on the D-Pad and the ability to use the center button on it as a mimic of me tapping the screen a lot.
The keyboard on the Droid was a huge selling point for me and I'm not convinced that arrow keys, mixed into the keyboard and lacking a unique button, are going to be nearly as functional.

@Alimas
i dont care about the onscreen keyboard, i never mentioned it. its not my fault androids software and virtual keyboard sucks, but thats a different argument for a different time. I like how you skip over the fact that the d-pad takes up 20% of the space that could have made the keyboard offset and correct, and make the keys larger, but youre too ignorant of a fanboy to get it.
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
I like how you skipped everything I said.
I addressed the keyboard size concern right here:
"Using just my thumbs, I can type almost as fast on it as I can on a standard keyboard." Obviously, the keyboard is not too small.
You also failed to address where I mentioned the D-Pad as an important tool to have.
So, 1 point for me, 0 points for you.
...put another notch over here on my "arguing on the internetz like a loser victory scoreboard".
@kid300:
You know what phone has an even worse keyboard than the Droid? The iPhone.
It's so bad I can't even find the damn thing. Talk about dysfunctional!
@Mr Blue
yeah, i guess the keyboard ''gets the job done'' but who wants to simply have a feature on a phone that ''gets the job done''. if when i was growing up when i mowed the lawn for my pops, he told me just use the hedge trimmers, u dont need the mower...it gets the job done, i'd be awfully upset.
the D pad on the droid is seriously a huge waste of space. i think you and the commenter below you are probably in the minority of people that i know that actually like the droids keyboard. not only do i know guys that hate it, but lots of non techy girls who refused to get it because the keyboard was so bad. either way, its a great phone, and i'm glad they got rid of that d pad. 4 way directional arrows are really just as effective.
@kid300 I have a Milestone and I'm quite fond of it actually.
@Alimas to be honest the dpad is nice but it is a rectangle rather than a square Dpad
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
Do you mean why we still have the arrow keys in the computer keyboard when everyone has a mouse?
@zepfloyd Anyone that knows anything would already have their Droid running Froyo at 1.25ghz. :D
how is this leak news?? Verizon has this info on their website
There is a god!
@SolidSnake
There are also ROMs :-)
@JXCGunrunna
I am running an overclocked Froyo ROM now - I can wait :]
wait..let me go back and watch my World Cup game on my Droid... Thank you Adobe Flash ;)
@Picaso4me
I am sooo rocking 1.25 GHz overclocked Froyo with Flash on me DROOIID right now.
@24kJames
Seriously? You can overclock that far on a regular droid?
@Crono141
Yes you can. It has to be a Rooted ROM of course. On my Droid the CPU managed to hit 1.25GHz with lower voltage "Ultra Low Voltage". It seems to run cooler and so much faster. I'm also using Adobe Flash on it- it works. Personally I use the 2.2 ROM created by ChevyNo1 on the DroidForums. Your results may very most seem to hit 1GHz @ Medium Voltage. I have also ran stress tests on it and it runs like a champ.
Still waiting for new on the Droid Deuce. What say you, Big Red?
Anything firm on the Moto Milestone?
@jhs The what?? ;)
@barry99705 Its the European name of the Droid.
@Zappy I know, that what the winkey smiley was for.
@jhs
MIlestone is quite the same droid with two difference :
-different firmware
-encrypted firmware (yuck).
ps :i own a milestone and i love it but for Motorola, Milestone is considered as a second class product even when droid is a flagship product.
@Zappy its the WORLD name of the droid... its cdma and called droid only for verizon :P (and it has an open bootloader only for verizon :( )
Time to root and rom to 2.2
Good, I hope all the problems with 2.1 on the Droid get fixed. A good update is long overdue.
Yeah right. When have any of these Android update estimates been accurate?
@Timmmmmm actually, Motorola is pretty good about sticking to their update calendars. It's Sprint and Smashing that you have to worry about.
posted from my Nexus One
By which time Android 2.3 will be in beta...
its all about the nexus baby
My DInc feels lonely.
@Distant
i know :'-(
The Droid 2 was pushed to August because its coming with 2.2 stock.
does anyone know if the DroidX or the droid 2 will be coming to the UK? thanks
@garfieldfriends They aren't. But they said there'll be a version of the Droid X for the rest of the world.
Yum
Frozen Yogurt never tasted so good
That's sweet. we old droids get froyo before ye new droids. Age before beauty?
@xdreamer lol its probably becuz the original droid runs stock android while the droid x uses ninja blur so. Its easier to update the original droid becuz of that.
#$%# yes!
yay
Or, you could just root your phone and have been running 2.2 for a month now.
Another great step for the superphone class. Eventually some competition will have to come from somewhere for superphones. WinPhone 7 looks like you're up.
@Blaque14K If Nokia would ever get off their collective asses and really release a N900 class phone, that would stir things up. You can run Debian on the thing.
@barry99705 I wish Nokia was subsidized on U.S. carriers. I don't care too much for their hardware design but I've always been interested in their N series and now especially since they are moving to Meego. They could easily be right up there with Android.
That's if ur smart enough and now how to root and rom
Nice.
