Android port for HTC HD2 overcomes big hurdle, finally getting close
The great thing about the HD2 is that it remains one of the most gorgeous pieces of smartphone hardware ever released -- but as long as it's saddled with the dead OS walking known as Windows Mobile 6.5, its stature in the power user community is perpetually stuck in first gear, no matter how pretty HTC has managed to make it. To that end, some of those very same power users have been working tirelessly to salvage the beast and shoehorn Android on there, but they've been tripped up by some errors involving the phone's Snapdragon core and the so-called HaRET tool used to boot Linux from Windows CE-based devices that have made a proper port seem all but impossible. Those hurdles have been overcome in the past couple days, though, which means a marginally consumer-friendly Android build might finally be within reach -- and considering that there's no proper EVO 4G equivalent from HTC in Europe yet, this project could have an awful lot of value.

And i jizzed in mah pants! Wow, i have been waiting for this for the longest time ever! I flove xda! xda ftw!!
@knucklessg1
No, that was me. I jizzed in your pants. Sry bro.
My hd2 loves new OS and tweaks !
I think more than celebrating this success, we should be using the response from it to illustrate how fail HTC and TMO were by adding Winmo 6.5 in the first place.
Froyo would be amazing on this.
Simple solution, just buy an android phone in the first place, everything working and no hacking required. Pretty sad when you have such a huge case of OS envy.

@theefman
Were's the fun in that. Let the man do his stuff.
@theefman i actually dont mind WinMo on this phone, its powerful and looks amazing with SenseUI... i dont buy my phones so i can buy an ass load of games that i only play about 3 times, that being said id love to see WinPho7 on this thing asap
YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!
Looking forward to a final product.
I want
I like WinMo 6.5. With TouchFlo 2.5 it's actually pretty good.
Is this a native port or just an emulator? If it's just an emulator then it's nothing to get excited about.
F'n awesome! i have been a loyal winmo user for years (1000 thanks goes to ppcgeeks and xda) and love my HD2. most dont realize how amazing winmo can be because usually out the gate it completely sux and thats all people know. but honest, it is a mini computer and in the right hands it can be a badass machine. but dual booting win/android on that hardware is a complete WIN. XDA..... you are gods!
@michaelbrandonw
also, in NYC tmobiles HSPA+ is ridiculous! my best pull as been 8873kbs...... add that with a free wifi router (thanks again for winmo) and youve got a huge win.
I really hope they figure something out because the HD2 as is (with WM6.5) is not a really good phone. Sure, the hardware is nice, but the software makes me hate my HD2. I have not installed any roms because I do not plan on keeping it. I lost my 3GS and bought and HD2 because I fed into the hype, but all it did was make me respect the iPhone even more.
@jdub562
i can honestly understand your frustrations.... but give it a try.. rock the spl, load some ROMs (cookies tab) and see what you think. if still you hate it... relock the spl and sell/return it.. although, i promise you wont be disappointed.
@jdub562 Than I must be delusional as mine works great for me. All it took was couple tweaks here I go, looking and performing way better than any iP or Ad around me o.O. Must be luck or simply will to try something else, huh? :)
now if we can only hack that friggin windows flag on the button.
If these make a port for the HD2, I will definitely donate.
Would this work on AT&T (with 3G)?
@dvd
Not on atts 3g. not that you would want it cause tmobile 3g is faster and cheaper anyway...
Thats what up. NICE!
brb while i fap
Please donate to the dev team working on this project... you can find the thread on xda-developers.com. Here is the paypal link for dcordes, the most active developer on this project... https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=NF3YYSMALGXUJ If you want android on the HD2, donations will help keep the devs active and moving ahead.
What does Android port actually mean? does that mean that it will run android on top of the winmo6.5 or will it just all around become an android phone?
i'll stick with winmo 6.5, the only os that does not constantly track your location an sell that info to 3rd parties
the only thing i see good from that is having the physical Call Send and End buttons on the HD2. i still search for phantom buttons on my Evo after using a touch pro 1, 2 and Mogul for a years, after i start multi tasking during a call, but can't hang up because i scramble for the End call button. no biggie. takes some getting used too.
Any mobil with windows on it is a big fat NO! from me.
It's looking better than the EVO imho. But specwise the EVO'd be a tad better i guess - anyway my Desire will do the job for some time and maybe I'll tell an HD" owner i know that he'll probably be able to switch to a better OS some time ;)
My only gripe with WinMo 6.5 is that it's slow, but nothing is slow on the Snapdragon. I'm utterly unimpressed by what I've heard about WP7 so far. It would be great to have Android as an option for the HD2, though. I like!
thank god for this, I was going to fork out on the vibrant but I would really like a HTC phone over the past failures of samsung
anyone here have a link to the actual build link
@ThatDudeSolo gr8t job blood. You surely have our rapt attention on this one. been wondering when this would happen ever since i got my HD2. Word!
at this stage in the game, i'd rather have the dead OS walking HD2 than an android with bugs and minimal software or the iphone that's does everything but make phone calls because of reception issues.
I cant wait for android. Windows mobile 6.5 is appalling!
Thats just a Evo, with a different flavour of android..
