Gyroscope gunning on the iPhone 4 with Eliminate: Gun Range (video)
We'd heard earlier that ngmoco's new game Eliminate: Gun Range was one of the first apps to really take advantage of the iPhone 4's gyroscope, and now that we've had a chance to play with it, we've got say there's a ton of potential here. E:GR is itself just a simple shooter, but the gyroscope adds what seems like nearly 1:1 motion control to the proceedings -- and since you're moving the display itself, it almost feels like augmented reality. It's hard to explain, since it's so unlike any mobile UI experience we've encountered before, but as soon as we tried it our brains pretty much exploded with possibilities -- we're thinking drastic improvements to actual augmented reality apps like Layar, all kinds of crazy flight simulator games, much more refined GPS apps, you name it. Video after the break.

Can't seem to find this in the UK app store o0
@geekthree Wow that is impressive
Nilay is APPLE Fanboy.
@geekthree
Lol@ "You should definitely give it a shot"
@geekthree
Wow that was impressive!
It will certainly help with walking around and stuff, so you won't need to swipe to change camera view.
I want to see this in Nova and CoD.
@potretr Yeah Everyone knows that Nilay is a Fanboy... http://twitter.com/reckless/status/16997119704
@geekthree The Nintendo 3DS has a gyroscope too. That plus the analog slide pad and physical buttons makes the 3DS one hell of a gaming device.
@liftedngifted1
I concur - very cool
@geekthree Pretty solid list of cons for this phone: http://briefmobile.com/should-i-buy-an-iphone-4
I mean, there are pros too... but at this point I'm not sure this device is worth the title "best smartphone ever."
Let me Repeat
Nilay is APPLE Fanboy.
@geekthree Its in the UK store now, I had trouble yesterday on the phone, could only find it in iTunes, but its there now.
And besides the screen and the camera, E:GR is what I'm using to show off the new iPhones capabilities. Everyone know how much the accelerometer sucks for anything but driving games, but this is a whole step above. It's genius. Now Dev's can actually get their hands on an iPhone4 it'll be awesome.
@geekthree Ignore my comment! I've since found it on the app store.. of course at the very moment I decided to prove to someon I couldn't find it.
Typical :)
Slowly downloading, but can't wait!!
@kpenning
WTF? How is your comment relevant to the original post? Oh just plugging your pathetic blog? Nice.
Trust me, I'd tear each of the four cons in your list open in seconds, two not even being cons with the phone and one issue ("yellowing screen") that clears itself over a day or two. If you don't have good ATT service, maybe you shouldn't buy an iPhone. If you like the Droid as pictured, maybe you shouldn't buy an iPhone. Novel I know but not really cons of the phone itself if you live in an area with reception and happen to like the iPhone over the Android flavor of the day. Idiot!
@kpenning
"Within 48 hours of launch, Gizmodo.com has posted three articles of different iPhone 4 glass breakages."
and that is from 600'000 that they sold by now....that is 0.0005 %..
@offscreen
I can imagine playing like this while trying to actual move with on screen controls. Its VERY cool when you are stationary, but trying to move forward back left right etc by pushing on screen buttons, plus moving the screen in all different directions sounds like itll be a nightmare.
@geekthree Very cool. I can't wait to see the wave of gyroscope games to hit the app store.
@offscreen
I dunno how well the 3DS would work trying that. Keeping perfectly in line with the display for the 3D imaging while moving around like that could be kinda difficult.
They need to put this on the ipad. The bigger screen will make games (and every apps using the gyro) look more impressive.
It may also lose some precision on a bigger screen!?
@geekthree According to rumor, the Samsung Captivate, which is coming to AT&T, also has a gyroscope. Let's hope that cool games like this come out for Android devices soon!
you can't receive call if you hold like that.
just saying...
@potretr
In 2007, Apple reinvented the phone.
In 2010 Apple reinvented the way you hold the phone! Magical!
@wizard32843
in 2007, Apple invented a phone that made it difficult to make calls.
Being the perfectionist Apple is, it became unhappy.
in 2010, Apple made it PERFECTLY impossible to make a call while holding the phone
@boxieblue
You tried to hard.
@potretr Maybe you're missing the point — the video clearly shows 5 bars while he is holding the phone like that....
@wizard32843 Change the topic !!What's the matter fanbois?? Your android can't do that?? sour grapes~!!
Uh oh I saw you holding it wrong...
@wizard32843
It's a feature, now no more phone calls to interrupt your gaming!
Hope the next touch has a gyroscope, ios4 is running sluggish jailbroken on my 2g
@mark29
It will but probably not a compass or GPS.
@tobsmonster2 I can understand no gps but the wifi only ipad has a compass so I dont see why the next touch won't, seeing as it will be used in games
@mark29
if it has a gyroscope, it won't need a compass, if it doesn't have GPS a compass would be useless, this game uses the gyro, not the compass, to orient the gun.
@theweeklymancast dave the jenga demo used the compass, this game may not be using the compass but I'm sure there will be games that do
@mark29
it may have used the compass, but it also used the gyroscope mainly, because you can't get tilt on the gyroscope, you need ONLY the gyroscope to perform the majority of these functions, rendering the compass useless other than for navigation.
@mark29
Thats OS bloat for you. Apple makes no attempt to optimize anything because the new hardware can handle it just fine, but it leaves owners of old hardware in the dust.
@Brad Green it works perfectly fine if I'm not jailbroken, very bouncy and snappy, I love it, but when jailbroken its just not the same so I've chosen to go without it being jailbroken and to be honest I'm not feeling like I'm missing much, there's obviuosly some little things like rotation lock and battery percentage that are just blatantly left out to piss you off.
@mark29 I know. I jailbroke it too to get the multitasking and backgrounds, and it is a nightmare. I have to constantly check how many apps I am running. I wish the jailbreak didn't include multitasking, but ah well.
@AwesomeStudios If you jailbreak with redsnow you can choose not to enable multitasking but its not that i checked by just doing redsnow without it selected and without even opening cydia once it was sluggish so this is a problem on redsnows part, be interesting to know if pwnage tool is better
That is the only reason that I kind of wish I had an iPhone 4. (And facetime)
@benblb u said only reason
I said before and I will repeat it. The gyro will change everything.
Sick !!!
That's pretty awesome.
Stop holding your iPhone like that!
Is it me, or does that iPhone look absolutely tiny in Nilay's hands?
@Tes
In Rock Paper Scissors, Nilay always wins with rock.
@geekthree
Topolsky - "But...but...I had paper!"
Patel - "Wrap it round my fist"
Topolsky - "you win dude..."
"Give that a shot"
Nice pun.
Probably the only feature that I will be truely envious my future droid x does not have.
Ps... don't spaceships have gyroscopes?
@connorpoole
So do normal ships for example they're used to keep aircraft carriers level.
Wow that was impressive!
It will certainly help with walking around and stuff, sonic you won't need to swipe to change camera view.
I want to see this in Nova and CoD.
What does a gyroscope actually do???
