iPhone 4 gets preliminary 'userland' jailbreak, real freedom still forthcoming
The most Twitter-vocal iPhone Dev Team member, Mr. MuscleNerd himself, has just posted a screenshot from a jailbroken iPhone 4. Before you get too excited, however, you should know that this is just a preliminary "userland" jailbreak, which means it uses Apple software to happen, and it's not of a low enough level to really be worth releasing, since it's easy for Apple to patch. Instead it's an important step toward a real, low-level jailbreak that can actually be released. We'd feign pins and needles if this community wasn't so gosh darned amazing at hacking these phones: we're sure that real jailbreak will be along shortly.

ok....and the purpose of jailbreaking a phone that can't actually be USED AS A PHONE, DUE TO ANTENNA ISSUES, is WHAT, exactly?????
@dave1812 u = annoying
@dave1812
For freedom.
@Revolutionary and beyond
@dave1812 The IPhone can pretty much do anything, sadly either because of hardware/at&t issues it's not so good at the primary feature of a phone which would be to make/receive good calls.
@dave1812 Even if jailbreak consisted entirely of sbsettings it would still be so worth it. I can't wait to break the jail.
@dave1812
I'm sure it can be used, just expect a few dropped calls lol. It is pretty though, I will give Apple that.
@Revolutionary
why lock urself up when u can choose to be free in the 1st place?
meh
@dave1812 I currently have five bars on my iPhone... and guess where I'd like you to stick 'em?
@madwh SBSettings is such a simple program, but people really seem to like it. And it's what I miss the most, probably because I use it all the time. Now I keep swiping the info bar on my iPhone 4, but it's never gonna come.
@madwh I jailbroke my 3G a few days ago... this isn't new.
@SskyNnet Oblivion because I said the truth? Some people should learn to handle the truth. I admit the iPhone is a bad ass phone, but we have to admit it is not the best at being a phone. You Apple fanboys can deny it, but facts are facts.
@greenenvy
My mothers vag.
@dave1812 Shut up, it's to do things with the hardware you bought. Apple should really team with the hackers to get some killer apps out there. They could really "innovate" then.
@Revolutionary
...and an Idiot.
@dave1812
iOS4 is on 3G[s] and 3G... jailbreaking iOS4 is not just for iPhone 4... Get a clue bro...
@greenenvy Ummm in your left hand?
@kreg37 "SBs is really such a simple program but people really seem to like it"
The same can be, and is said about iOS.
@Quietplease
Who looked at redsn0w. I guess me and that guy...
@Revolutionary - and how about saurik's name: JAY F.R.E.E.M.A.N!! How cool is that for the name of the guy that hosts the leading Repo. LOL!
PS Wonder if that's his real name? On another note, the only beef with Cydia is that it doesn't have a clean "what's new" section like Rock and it doesn't let you filter by software type when you click on the changes category. To much having to fish through endless theme spam to get to the nuggets. Sayin...
@dave1812 You act as if the only device running the iOS is the iPhone 4. There are 3 previous generations of iPhone, as well as 3 generations of iPod touch, as well as the iPad, which all use iOS. And before anyone says it: yes, I know older generations are no longer supported with iOS 4.0 onward.
facetime unrestrictor? :D
can't wait!
@Michalis
Actually it is called 3G un restrictor, and it has been around for a while. Basically makes your phone think its using Wifi for programs that need wifi but you are still on 3G.
@livefree The mother of all JB apps, that and Backgrounder since iOS 4 is still a POS for multitasking.
@Michalis
With 2gb of data why on earth would you want to do video chat over 3g
@unf2011 not everyone has only 2GB, anyone that previously had an iPhone plan had the choice to stay on the $30/mo unlimited (actually 5Gb) plan... thats what i did, for this reason exactly!
@unf2011 Maybe he doesn't live in the US. I get 20 GB every month with my Danish iPhone plan at 3 including 300 min., unlimited SMS/MMS for $65 and free tethering.
And I'm sure some other Europeans can beat that price, but there is a world outside the US.
@anotherworld Backgrounder doesn't work yet for iOS4. SBSettings does!
@Quietplease
backgrounder sure does work, it didnt just a few days ago tho. is great for enabling multitasking for all other apps that arent upgraded for ios 4 yet.
FACETIME OVER 3G! Followed by AT&T crashing.....D=
@JohnPheng
Nah, I bet many calls will be dropped before it crashed.
@JohnPheng Facetime+over Att network= Faceplant.
@JohnPheng Please tell me where you got your profile picture? lol
@JohnPheng
maybe it is just me, but i could care less about facetime. i don't see any real benefit of video calls using a mobile phone.
No.
No.
No.
No Apple news until my antenna is fixed.
Shit, I'm going back to Sprint for my BlackBerry.
At least there, I can get some decent 3G with a decent antenna.
@xxjoaquin
Your antenna isn't broken, you're just holding your phone the wrong way.
- Jeb
@E30 Kid Just like you were every other phone you've ever had, ever.
@E30 Kid
If you can't hold the phone, you blew it.
@xxjoaquin
Its a safety feature to stop people from talking on the phone while driving. Apple should hire me. /s
@E30 Kid My friends google nexus one does the same thing
@xxjoaquin
stop complaining and buy a cheap case! Holy shit
@maattp
@maattp You Apple apologists are ridiculous. Yes, touching an antenna will attenuate its signal. No, most other phones don't have this as a serious problem. And you should not have to give extra money to a company who sold you a device with a hardware deficiency in the first place. That's preposterous.
@derp
Bridging the anttenae doesn't cause signal loss on all iPhone 4s. I tried it on mine and couldn't get even one bar to drop.
I'm not denying that it's a big problem but your statement implies that it definitely affects all iPhone 4s.
@synthesis777
I get mine in Wednesday but I tried the antenna reception issue on a coworkers iPhone 4 and sure enough it went from full service to ZERO bars within 3-5 seconds. Did it several times just to make sure it was consistent. And sure enough.. It was. Hopefully the bumper will fix this issue.
Spectacular. The Dev community behind Apple is amazing. Although my iPhone 4 is still lost in shipping i know i'll be missing my sbsettings, bitesms and springboard mods when it gets here...
Without these guys there really is no reason a guy like me would even consider an iPhone. But the screen got smaller albeit with a higher resolution, the former matters more to me than the latter (although I'd rather have both).
That being said, I own a HD2 which also has an awesome dev community. We are so close to Android I can smell it.
Dev Race! HD2 Android team vs. iPhone 4 Dev Team
My issue here not just with the iphone but with carrier-linked at&t phones. You should feel like your phone is yours and not some walled bloody garden that you're trapped in.
