iPhone 4 gets preliminary 'userland' jailbreak, real freedom still forthcoming
The most Twitter-vocal iPhone Dev Team member, Mr. MuscleNerd himself, has just posted a screenshot from a jailbroken iPhone 4. Before you get too excited, however, you should know that this is just a preliminary "userland" jailbreak, which means it uses Apple software to happen, and it's not of a low enough level to really be worth releasing, since it's easy for Apple to patch. Instead it's an important step toward a real, low-level jailbreak that can actually be released. We'd feign pins and needles if this community wasn't so gosh darned amazing at hacking these phones: we're sure that real jailbreak will be along shortly.

@Insomniac Sinner
Not sure why it would need to be jailbroken. My 3GS was, just for orientation lock and the backgrounding of Runkeeper. Basically, I took a hit on battery life and stability for those 2 features. Now, with iOS 4 and the iPhone 4, I literally am done with needing anything. The battery life on this phone is nothing short of staggering.
@Insomniac Sinner
Next thing you know they're gonna tell you how you should hold your phone! Oh wait...
@John22s Weird, I sold my itouch 2g a long time ago and recently got a droid incredible and would never look back. On my incredible there is no such thing as "holding the phone wrong". Have fun with your subpar reception!
does this edition still include the yellow tint?
im glad i am not interested in making calls with the "wrong" hand
I'm glad my phone doesn't require a bumper (the equivalent of a flag that says "i yank s. jobs wanker."
hackers ftw!
Yay I'll only buy an iPhone 4 when a proper jailbreak is released
and what about unlock? What is the name of the software for unlocking iPhones? Any info what it will be released for iPhone 4?
SO many possibilities for this particular JB, it's going to be truly awesome. My iPhone 4 is ready (and working as a phone!). Many thanks to the Dev Team and MuscleNerd for all their hard work.
Yea, hopefully when late July rolls around they'll the iOS4 jailbreak for the iPhone 4. By then I'll have my White iPhone 4 and I'm sure that they'll have put out a 4.01 patch out.
3GUnrestrictor, BiteSMS, Shrink, SBSettings, PDANet, Winterboard, YourTube, WiFI Sync, & ActionMenuePlus should be what all iPhone Jailbreakers have.
Those are the only reasons I jailbreak, and those are the literally most important apps to have. It’ll literally change the way you use your iPhone. I couldn’t use the iPhone if I couldn’t jailbreak it. Jailbreak till the day I die. iOS + Jailbreak = Win (every single time).
@EagleyeSmith
I Literally know what you mean.
Statusnotifier, lockinfo, grip, sbssettings, mifi, bitesms and maybe yourtube. If apple can just add those first 4 or 5 then I wouldn't have to jailbreak.
I thought that we were going to be able to choose which app to open up an email attachment with? Also why can't we have a unique signature per email account?
With All Of Apple's iPhone 4 And iOS 4's Innovations, It Is Sad That Apple Can't Seem To Open It's Eyes And Intergrate Some Of The Options And Features Available Thru Jailbreaking. This Is Just A Case Of How Apple Expects Us To See The World How Steve Sees It.
@Insomniac Sinner They've been doing that in every iOS release... I think the main holdout is something like SBSettings though...
I just want FaceTime over 3G
U iPhone ppl discust me. "Oh i cant wait for the jailbreak. Just admit it the iPhone sucks unless u can jailbreak the phone. Without the jailbreak its just a expensive ass phone. And u would get bored of it quick
@hoodcrist
Jailbreak, root...people like options. Doesn't mean the phone sucks in the first place.
@hoodcrist
You couldn't be more wrong or ignorant. I used to hate the fact that my iPhone was jailbroken. The phone was slower, it crashed, and the battery didn't last as long. SBSettings is ugly. All I wanted that for was an orientation lock, which I now have.
I had backgrounder, but it sucked. I hated that I had to constantly remember to shut apps down or manage them in any way. I'd glance at my battery and then think "shit, I forgot to close down Runkeeper".
Some of us don't have the time to be micro-managing our phones. I want it to do what I ask, do it quickly, and then return safely to my pocket.
@ebgolfin I had the same problem using backgrounder for Pandora and AIM. But the issue is not running things in the background aka multitasking, the issue was that those apps are buggy and tended to spin using 100% cpu time. Honestly it's not really surprising that patching the springboard to not send the "close down" notification to applications causes problems when they aren't expecting it.
@hoodcrist
Look at it this way..
Apple only targets the majority. Those who dont understand technology, and those who just want things to be simple and easy.
The jailbreak community is there to fill the holes, for those like us who want more power, more customization and more features.
And since Apple refuses to give those power users what they want, the jailbreak community is still standing strong.
I agree with you when you say the iPhone sucks, because on its own, without a jailbreak, it does suck. But I only say that because I am a power user.
Android on the other hand, is for the minority. Those who want power, customization, and features right out of the box.
A similar situation is happening with Android as well. Those who want even more power, customization and features that Google does not allow, roots their phone.
It isnt a matter of which company is better, its just whos targeting who.
Does it still need shock collar
Why does this article appear under http://www.engadget.com/exclude/apple/ ?
Guys I gotta quick question I'm new to the jailbreak community but I wana know if you can over clock the a4 processer like you were always able to do on the android platform ¿
@Dbasedgod
No you cant.
There are no programs available for any iPhone or iPod touch that changes the CPU speed.
I think it will show up for the iPhone 4 in time though, but dont count on getting it in a month or two.
You guys misunderstand the meaning of a "userland" exploit. It means that they were able to exploit an application that's supposed to run with the user's normal privileges (i.e. in userland), and use it to gain very low level access the system-- low enough to patch out the signature checks in the kernel, which is a necessary prerequisite to running Cydia. In some ways, a userland exploit is actually more severe than a hardware one, since it could potentially be used maliciously.
@madwh I jailbroke my 3G a few days ago... this isn't new.
@Quietplease
This isn't iOS4. This is for iPhone 4.
@BigJayDogg3 Any jailbreak that runs on the iPhone 4 will be backwards-compatible... (Especially a userland jailbreak, which would be compatible with any iOS4 device)
Android Devs will always win. Phones are rooted and have custom ROMs running before the phones are released.
What? A userland jailbreak does not mean that it's not "worthy of being released"... The first several jailbreaks were userland-based, as was the most recent one ('spirit'). Of course, it's not as powerful as a low-level jailbreak, but to users who just want a simple jailbreak (and down the line, an unlock), it's ideal.
@AriX
They are waiting for the first service pack (ios 4.01 or 4.1) prior to publish the crack
@magallanes That doesn't mean it'll be a non-userland jailbreak, though :p (Although it might be, since there are some lower-level exploits currently known... I would assume it'll be the userland one though.)
I won't be picking up an iPhone 4 until it's legit jailbroken. I prefer my jailbroken 3gs over the hardware upgrades on the new phone, as tasty as they are.
I'd miss things like sbsettings, stack and folders that can hold more than 12 apps too much.
wait, so every phone OS doesn't simply let you enter the Konami code for full access? That's dumb.
@Cringer
sudo :make me a jailbreak (or a sandwich).
came buckets when I saw the SS of Cydia on the iPhone 4, but then I read the text =(
I want live weather back!
I have a jailbroken ipod touch 2g on os 4.0
