Motorola Charm coming to T-Mobile with 'enhanced' Android 2.1 Motoblur? Update promised for CLIQ and CLIQ XT?
Usual rules apply -- we can't independently confirm this at the moment -- but a tipster has sent us what appears to be T-Mobile training materials for an upcoming Motoblur-infused candybar smartphone, the Motorola Charm. Only this Motoblur is allegedly powered by Android 2.1 and boasts the same scalable widgets as we saw on Droid X, in addition to improved Facebook / Twitter integration (hello, Like and Retweet) and the usual Eclair refinements.As far as the hardware is concerned, there isn't much to glean from it at this point, aside from a textured QWERTY keyboard reminiscent of the CLIQ and a "camera" button denoting some form of memory-capturing capabilities. Speaking of which, the materials mention that the enhanced Motoblur is heading to CLIQ and CLIQ XT. Let us bookend this entire post with another reminder that none of this is confirmed, but we do know more than a few T-Mobile users who would love to get their mitts on a candybar Android.

I love this form factor, even if it is a bit wide.
@Schmid7y Same here, the only thing I don't think I'd get use to is the fact that the app drawer comes from the side at all times.
@Schmid7y
That's what he said!
*sigh* This puts my life in perspective. :'(
@Schmid7y Umm, why no ninja blur is what I ask Motorola?
@Schmid7y
I like this form factor too.
Anyone know what happened to the htc salsa?
@Schmid7y i find this more appealing than the kin for some reason. is motoblur pretty much an android OS?
@(Unverified)
Moto blur is a skin on Android. So, yes, this is Android.
@Schmid7y - but is this a real KB? Or is it Memorex? Also.. can we really call this a candybar? I like candy and all, but I never saw one so square. Well, except for a Chunky! I LIKED CHUNKY'S!!!
@Mehdi90
Ninjablur is for power user phones
Motoblur is for social networking phones
@Schmid7y
A bit wide is an understatement. What pocket will that fit in?
Looks like another Kin and should sell about as well. Motorola needs to get out of the cellphone business. They're a disgrace to U.S. tech companies. Stealing from employees and investors alike. Only the executives make money from that company.
@Schmid7y
I'd love the design without the 3 ugly big buttons
@MosesusedaniPad
It looks like it would fit fine in any normal pocket, stop wearing skinny jeans. Also, please stop trying to give out business advice, because you're terrible at it. Motorola should definitely not shut down. They've been coming out with tons of great phones lately. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean their products are bad.
@Professor Hubert J Farnsworth
HE said that????
@Schmid7y thats what she said
@Schmid7y Likewise. It has to be, hands down, the most efficient form factor. No sliding, flipping, caressing; none of that lawlessness.
@Schmid7y
This is focused to blackberry users, they are offerin now a better OS and touchscreen.
I actually like it?!
@oldpass56
I'd like it more if it had stock android or ninjablur. I hate the way motoblur makes a phone look like a fisher-price toy.
Umm, why no ninja blur is what I ask Motorola?
I have a Cliq and i'd love to have a motorblur and/or android platform update. Please be true!
Tmobile release some decent competitors to the evo and the droidX please.
Stop releasing this crap.
@PathogenX
Actually the Nexus one is a very good competitor but yes, they needed to have something bigger... 4.3" big.
@PathogenX T-Mobile doesn't make phones.
@cdf74dc9 The nexus one is only available through google.
and it's still a great phone but it's getting old.
@pika2000
I never said Tmobile made phones.
@PathogenX
Put a T-Mo logo on the N1 and there you have it, a T-Mo made phone. FYI N1 is as good or better than competitor phone. Same guts with different appearance. I found that my previous N1 phone is faster than my current Evo but they completely appear very different somehow.
@PathogenX - AGREED. Tmo needs a RIDICULOUS phone. The Galaxy-S and Streak are likely to appear on ATT first, witch is a bunch of BS. The Nexus, Sure sure it is great and all, but it is not really available for anyone ON the network already unless you wan to pay 500 for something that is being overshadowed by this insane hardware being released-announced in the coming weeks/months. MMMMk.
I want something insane. On Tmo. Do not let us down.
@meatball
Nexus One...
@PathogenX
getting old? What does the Nexus One not have that you want? 720p video recording? That's about it. The Nexus One was so much better than everything else on the market when it launched, everything else is just catching up.
The things I think Google needs to do for the "Nexus 2" is add a front facing camera, have a better camera sensor (capable of 720p video as well), and a better 3.5mm headset jack as well as the usual bump in technology (better processor, better screen, etc).
@meatball
You want something ridiculous and insane? Join the army
@meatball HTC Vision?
http://www.intomobile.com/2010/06/25/htc-vision-dual-core-processor-android-gingerbread-4-3-inch-display-coming-to-t-mobile/
@meatball
what exactly is over shadowing the nexus one ? It has the same specs as the evo, incredable the same 1 ghz processer 512 mb of ram ext If. Anything I'll say that the nexus one has a leg up on sone if the phones (update wise)
@Dbasedgod
It'd be really nice if TMobile would make wifi calling available on Android.
@d3sc3nd3ncy
It would be nice if the nexus one was available to everyone else and the same price as the competition but instead its only available through google and costs almost $300.
Tmo needs a $200 competitor to the evo and droid. That is available in store. With better features.
They are in 4th place and don't seem to care at all...
@cdf74dc9 HELLO! HTC HD2 MUCH???? That has a 4.3" screen and is almost exactly lke the Evo! WTFTW?
@Kyralik
Windows mobile 6.5
No thank you.
@PathogenX
The Nexus One is $529 (without tax) through Google, no contract required. You pay $20 less per month by not signing a 2 year agreement (and therefore waving your right to a phone stipend). If you do the arithmetic, you come out with saving $480 dollars over a 2 year contract period. Subtracting that from the cost of the phone, you get $49, which is lower than ~$200 for another phone in its class.
I can't speak to the process of signing a 2 year contract, but Google list it at $179.
I agree with your premise that the fact that you can't see them in stores and buy them from the store is a major detractor, but the phone itself is actually cheaper than the others, significantly. (Yes, in the long run, but you have to pay the ETF, so you might as well consider it long term)
Dear Moto,
Stop making Android ugly.
Thank you,
Collywobbles
@collywobbles
From Moto:
Dear Andrew, we don't give a fuck about your opinion.
XOXO. Moto.
@collywobbles
They should redesign the 3 fugly mandatory buttons, for starters
@huzzlehoff
What should they use instead that will remain equally descriptive as what they have now?
@Dafrety
I leave that for the designers to decide :-), but..
something that gives these great devices the finish they deserve. Now, in my opinion, looks like someone has taken a dump in the well designed devices :-D
I hope this is real. Android needs some more form factors, other than vertical sliders and keyboardless candy bars.
Yes, and I'm sure developers agree that there's nothing more that they would want but to have to code for a dozen different device form-factors and screen resolutions. After all, just look at how well Windows Mobile did with so many form-factors to choose from.
@Leindurstit
Developers are already supposed to be designing resolution independent. If they aren't that's their problem, not the consumers. Also, I'm pretty sure Windows Mobile's problem was that Microsoft let everything stagnate, not to do with giving options.
@Leindurstit
Devs should be coding for the platform, not the form factor as it is so this shouldnt be a problem anyway
@Dafrety
This is basically a slider with no sliding parts... (and ugly, but that's my opinion)
@Dafrety Thing is, Android's OS feels optimized for a full touch screen experience. Heck, how many people actually use the trackball/optical trackpad on their Android phones on a regular basis for interacting with the UI? It's easier to just touch the screen. Using this phone would be a bit more awkward (considering you have a smaller screen, and the arrow keys on the bottom right) vs the likes of Nokia E71. If moto wants to do this form factor, the least they should do is put a d-pad of some sort.
What's up with the oddly connected keys? K and O, ? and ', and the down key and (not really sure what) key
@Fat Scooter
I guess that's part of its charm.
