Droid 2 rumored to be launching August 23rd with Android 2.2
We've certainly gotten a peak at quite a few Droid 2 details so far, but word of a release date has unfortunately never been among them. That now looks to have changed, however, with the folks at Android and Me reporting that a "trustworthy source" has informed them that the phone will be launching on August 23rd. According to the site, that date was apparently chosen so the Droid 2 would be the first phone to ship with Android 2.2 out of the box, although that of course remains to be confirmed (current test versions of the Droid 2 are said to be running Android 2.1). If recent rumors pan out, however, the Droid 2 wouldn't be the first Droid to make the jump to Froyo -- the original Droid is said to be getting the update in "late July," while the Droid X will have to wait until late August.

win.
@treef rt
I would still get the Droid X over this but that's just my opinion.
@ I want some MOTO love on Sprint
@treef rt
Device = win...
August?!.... = not so win...
@benthe1 It's definitely hot... for me, it would come down to how substantial the battery life is decreased by the monster Droid X screen.
@treef rt
Wow! You're not kidding, this is a win!
I think the styling is more refined than the original droid, and this is refreshing. With the bumped processor and added ram, this will be a performer and a welcome addition to the Android arsenal.
@treef rt
Battery life is better than the original Droid according to this post.

He got 9 hours 30 minutes talk time from the Droid X. With the Droid, he got 7 hours 30 minutes.
@treef rt: I dont see why. almost identical hardware (only major change is an improved keyboard). The droid will be getting updated in july, almost a month before. And in all likelihood, they both will be having identical software. The rounded design doesn't look as appealing.
Don't know why did Motorola take the pain redesigning it. Parallel production would just add to their cost.
@Jean Marc Agree! i wonder why no moto smart phones on sprint. I think they have much nicer build quality than HTC.
@treef rt
Cool phone!
I've got to say, I find it most entertaining and enjoyable to watch the steady ongoing march of Android vs. the explosive annual celebrations of iPhone. Personally, I went with Android. Got my Samsung screen Droid Incredible before they ran out, and it is delicious. Most useful feature, imo: the voice search. "Call Paul" my phone calls Paul. "Navigate to [address] in Minnesota" my phone navigates to [address] in freakin Minnesota--I don't have to push any more buttons. Need to type a message or an email? No, just speak it. Mr. fat fingers here grinnin' away.
In any case, great job Moto \(* o * / )
HTC, wanna fire back? Let the games continue! Pull out all the stops, bring out all the bad boys, let's see MeeGo, BB, Android, iPhone, and WinMo7 fight their way to superphone nirvana so Joe Consumer can have the best tech at the cheapest price. Here's to lookin' at you, Capitalism ;)
@Jean Marc no kidding! I love my EVO, I had a BB for 3 years, and I thought I couldn't live without a keyboard, after I used my EVO, now I can't go back to a regular keyboard anymore. Typing on EVO is like a dream, auto correction is awesome. The no stress and pressure on my fingers. Also, less weight to carry, Moto's Droid is heavier and thicker than EVO in the pocket.
@treef rt
Just wish Sprint would pickup some of the Moto sets. They all look really nice. Well the CDMA ones anyway.
@Jean Marc Yeah! Why can't Sprint get the Droid 2? Does Verizon have it padlocked like AT&T with the iPhone?
@Engadget "We've certainly gotten a peak"
Do you mean 'peek' or are you using an innuendo?
I don't get why Moto are even making Droid 2 when they have the Droid X. That's just going to confuse people because they won't know which is the new one or the better one. The letter X is used for 10 so some will think Droid X > Droid 2, which won't necessarily be the case.
@Kanga You meant free market and competition, you brainwashed by capitalists American "friend"...
Nice. Hopefully my Evo gets Froyo officially in July.
Me wants froyo...
Camera is set to florescent, btw.
@nicklar Is it me or are the majority of the Droid shots taken outside? I'm not a photography expert, but I'd imagine images don't look that great when shot at 1pm on a sunny day.
@tasteskindasalty
You would never see an Apple product appear on Engadget looking this awful. Just sayin'.
@nicklar
But does it have GameCenter? Yeah, thought so.
i swear there is a camera on there. I circled the dot that looks like a camera and in the second image, I adjusted the brightness and contrast to show something that's definitely there.

@NaJaKwa It is the sensor that turns off the display when you are on the phone. The original Droid has it too.
@NaJaKwa
thats probably the proximity sensor.
@NaJaKwa
The same thing is on the original Droid. It the Proximity Sensor if I am not mistaken. (The thing that shuts off the screen when you press it against your face.)
@NaJaKwa
LED indicator....proximity sensor on the other side
@sethmo
thx, moving on...
@sethmo
Yes, these extra "holes" are quite visible on the EVO as well... two, light and proximity sensors, right under left side of earpiece.
Wow they managed to make another device just as fugly and bulky. Way to go motorola. U been creating simply crap for a decade now.
@Carbone
I'm sorry that this phone is too big for your skinny jeans.
@Carbone Just fyi, my old Motorola Razr still makes better calls than my iPhone 4. After all, isn't that the main reason to own a cell phone...to talk to people?
@tasteskindasalty Perhaps you could fashion a pocket for it inside your year-around houndstooth scarf?
@tasteskindasalty Dang it, wrong reply-to... ::sigh::
@treef rt You keep trying to look cool, I'll keep remembering its just a freakin cell phone.
@tasteskindasalty It's just a cell phone to you perhaps, but I find that actually talking is what I do least on my *ahem* device by a long shot.
@tasteskindasalty
I agree; as long as it functions well at its primary task; then the look of a phone and its "shiny-factor" shouldn't effect the user that much.
-Sent from my Jitterbug.
@tasteskindasalty Why did you get an iPhone? Looks like you should have gone with a Droid.
It's a little prettier than the first. That's always good. Hopefully it will have all the FroYo features like mobile hotspot.
My employer is looking at possibly moving to support Android and iPhone platforms for email. I'd LOVE to have this happen this year and be done with these Blackberries, but regardless of when it does happen I'll be on the Android bandwagon.
@Crim
Froyo is supposed to come with Enterprise support if that matters at all.
@Flowah
Yes, once that Communicator for Android app is good to go, then we will def push our Mobility division to officially support Android. We just started with iPhones as they is a Communicator app available now.
Please come to Canada...
@Tyler
Telus will probably get it 3 - 5 months after the US release, just like when the first Droid came out.
@Tyler
UK too.
Forget the 2.2 bit, need the hardware now. Froyo later.
@Tyler
I'd at least like them to announce if it's coming... if there aren't any new Android phones announced for Canada by the time the iPhone 4 arrives... I'll probably end up getting that.
Uk too xx
Win.
I gotta admit, that keyboard looks infinitely better without that [worthless] trackpad. I know some people like the Droid X (I personally dislike it), but I honestly think this is the best looking smartphone Motorola has made.
I'm glad that the didn't really change the design.
@Dafrety I actually wish they changed the design even less. I suppose I'm okay with the cover kind of covering the chin, but I wish it was still in all black.
@redpanda
I read on HowardForums that the testing models were that shade of blue but that the final was not supposed to be.
@Dafrety
I love the new keyboard layout. 2010 shall be the Year Of Androids
