We've certainly gotten a peak at quite a few
Droid 2 details so far, but word of a release date has unfortunately never been among them. That now looks to have changed, however, with the folks at
Android and Me reporting that a "trustworthy source" has informed them that the phone will be launching on August 23rd. According to the site, that date was apparently chosen so the Droid 2 would be the first phone to ship with
Android 2.2 out of the box, although that of course remains to be confirmed (current test versions of the Droid 2 are said to be running Android 2.1). If
recent rumors pan out, however, the Droid 2 wouldn't be the first Droid to make the jump to Froyo -- the original Droid is said to be getting the update in "late July," while the Droid X will have to wait until late August.
*sniff *sniff There's my baby on the left (well, his American cousin anyway - it's the Milestone up here).
It's going to be tough deciding between the X and the 2.
I much prefer a physical keyboard, but the Droid (and now this Droid 2) don't exactly have the best keyboards, even if they improved it slightly in this new version, it's still pretty darn flat. Also the 2 still looks too bulky - videos have shown it to be the same size as the original Droid and that was none too pocket friendly.
The X on the other hand looks cool, but maybe almost too big. And of course no real keyboard on it.
Somebody needs to learn a thing called white balance.
@pika2000
Yes and your late, everyone commented about this when it was leaked around the 21st lol.
Hopefully the keyboard is half decent
@smoof111
That's exactly what it is, "half decent". It's not a decent keyboard. HTC, BB, Palm and Samsung are the ones who manufacture decent keyboards.
@TareG Im sorry but the palm pre keyboard is trash jus sayin
Love webos though
I have a droid and I have to disagree about it being ugly. There are design peeps that love the Droid bc its a throwback to 80s and has a industrial design that is not really seen among other phones.
Europeans are getting short-changed with releases!
Shoot Store opens at 9am and I got class at 10am.
I guess I am missing my first class on the first day of the semester.
Unless I can order it online which I hope I can do at 12am!!
Problems with the Droid 2:
1) Slider won't snap in place Nokia-style, must be pushed all the way.
2) No front camera i.e. No Skype, Fringe, Qik, Eye-tracking, Face recognition in this phone's future.
3) Flat keyboard, second only to the Droid 1.
@TareG
Have you used the phone?
@thescreensavers
Buzz off. No-one has; HENCE the future tense.
Take your intelligent pants elsewhere.
@TareG
uh yes people have used the phone, its called testers which I thought you were/are one so STFU.
@TareG
I like the slider on my Droid.
I also enjoy making 3G video calls with Fring on my Droid since it can use the camera on the back.
Amazing. Yes it would be nice to see the person you're talking to at the same time, but to say you cannot make video calls with Fring or whatever is just wrong. I can and I have and I do.
@Flowah
Well thank you, Captain Obvious. I should have said "face to face Skype and Fringe video calls".
You've just described something I used to do on -I kid you not- 2005 Nokia dumbphones without front cams.
@TareG
Congrats? You said there was no video calling on the device. A false statement.
Maybe you want to reword it to say what you actually mean?
@TareG. Oh my God Tara you are worthless! Sorry if someone pissed in your Cheerios this morning but keep your self-loathing self-contained, please!
Crap
Just reserved droid x
But looking at swype to replace the physical keyboard of my lg versa...
I am a bit diappointed of the silver bevel edge, and the "Chin". I prefere the design of Droid.
Verizon are pumping these out like octo-mom does babies. Loving Android
i'm not sure who to blame, android/google or motorla , but my milestone was bug afflicted like hell. (wlan probs,alarm clock probs, reception probs and much more)
so this was the last time for me with an android or motorola device.
@shizzledmg
probably user "probs"
@barsoum89 you've got probably interpretation probs.
@shizzledmg
Did you use ATK?
no FFC? next !
Wow, lifespan of an Android phone is short as heck, your new Android phone will be obsolete by another before you get it home and unpackaged. Good grief. Not a very good marketing plan at all, "Let's flood the market with cheap knockoffs, Yayayayay!!" Lame.
@Yavin1
Cheap knockoffs? In what universe are the Droid X and Droid 2 cheap or knockoffs? In what universe do you constantly need the latest version of everything? Why is it only with phones? Do you get an updated car model every few months? Do you upgrade your HDTV every few months? Your computer? Your laptop? You >insert any electronic device here
@Yavin1
1. Cheep knock offs? What are you smoking.
2. Yes, because accelerated development and variety killed the PC market.
@redpanda
classic.
Didnt you hear? no one needs a pc. just an ipad (this is extreme sarcasm, not to be confused with my opinion)
will all of these Droids get along in the same room, one is bound to become self aware, and that's when shit will get real.
Just FYI, the test devices (at least some) ARE in fact running 2.2 software. :)
The keys being bumped is a big plus over the original.
And obviously the improved hardware is too.
But just based on looks alone, I like my Droid 1 more :P
One note though, I found the battery cover on the Droid 1 to come off a little too easily. In fact I lost it in the past month. I wonder if they made it a bit more secure?
I have found my 3GS replacement.
Just FYI, at least some of these test devices ARE in fact running 2.2 :) Seem nice, I'm mostly just concerned about the audio quality. Got burned by the Droid.
@hated one
just because something sells well doesn't mean it is good. i see alot of Ford Taurus on the road.
All sliders suck. Get the "swype" keyboard and never look back. Pecking at keys is so 20th century.
well they better not drop support for the orginal moto droid android rom updates just because number2 launched....
i better still get updates for a solid year or more, otherwise there will be an issue, because i wont buy another moto handset i will jusy buy google's handset asap
I've had a physical keyboard since my HTC Harrier in 2004. Still debating whether I still need it. Also still debating whether the Droid X is too big. Droid 2 or what to see what else comes to the table this fall?
You know, I absolutely love my droid with one exception: the metal bezel around the glass. The problem is, the glass is set in ever so minutely, and the protruding edge irritates my ear on long coversations. The droid 2, from the pictures, retains this design. All of their competitors have the glass flush with the chassis, and are more comfortable to talk on.
Come on moto, fix this on the droid 2 and make the phone perfect.
Ugly @ss phones
I'd be happy just to get the original Droid in Australia
I might even consider upgrading my G1
Can you say brick? Apple must be doubled over laughing if this is the competition.
@grilla at least it call make a call!
@grilla ugh. can....at least it can make a call. Stupid no delete world engadget lives in is so iPhone 2G.
@grilla
You can make calls and Can hold it in anyway.
I like the keyboard
Sorry, but im gettin the X on the first day.
