The mechanism that opens and closes the articulated display is pretty neat -- but otherwise, there isn't much from
Negri Electronics' video of its
mysteriously-obtained Nokia prototype that is likely to raise many eyebrows. The phone -- labeled "C0" but more likely a member of the Nseries or Eseries -- gets poked and prodded over the course of four-odd minutes, revealing a number of ports protected with plastic flaps (micro HDMI included, it seems) along with a good, close look at that expansive QWERTY keyboard. Performance looks reasonable but not mind-blowing -- and we don't want to pass judgment on a software build that's likely got months of work left before retail -- so this could be a reasonable option for
N97 and
N97 Mini owners looking for an upgrade with a capacitive display and some ultra-mild UI rework. Follow the break for the video.

little laggy?? Music sounded like it was from an old Phantasy Star menu or something. lol.
For all of Symbian's woes, I've spent some time on Nokia's touchscreen devices, and have found it to be quite a pleasant experience. It's not jaw-dropping, but it's not too shabby either. Having said that, can't wait for Nokia's S^3 toting devices to be unleashed. Looks pretty to me.
Oh, and for the record, I'm an Apple fan. :)
@MrPinkBlackrose
It's called a prototype smart ass in terms of both hardware and software.
See the big sign saying PROTO on the back?? I'm assuming you can read.
The E7, at last!!!! Seems really great.
Now there is the N8, C7, E7, I can't wait to see the X7! It's going to be hard to choose a Symbian^3 device, definitively.
Good to see Nokia still having alot of phones with keyboards too many other companies are just all touch screens , touch screens are great and all , but i love my N900 keyboard.
they need to make meego run android apps and they'll have a chance.
shouldn't be that hard to do.
@obobo
well Symbian will be able to use Meego apps since the apps will be written in QT, so then Android should start supporting proper porting to QT as well.
@obobo
Nokia and Apple can't have a more different strategy with regards to app development.
Apple tries to lock developers to the iPhone SDK aiming to retain the lead in mobile platforms. Nokia, on the other hand, wants to attract developers by offering them reach (easy port to other platforms) and choice (of programming languages, for instance) with Qt. With its unmatched scale and presence in all product ranges, Nokia believes it can dominate its competitors even if they are championing cross-platform-ness.
whts that song called, pretty kool
@DoctarPeppar
I agree Nokia's current browser is horrible. But I've tried the new version that they'll launch by the end of the year and it's quite an improvement.
@Goc The flash works perfectly on the n8, but browser is still a little sluggish. That was a few month ago of course.
@wsh03370
Or it says N00 cause it runs N8s beta software?
that could also mean that this is a real eraly proto, perhaps not to be released this year, and might turn out to be E8 or E9 or something.
Shame about the single button at the bottom, bit of an iPhone copy. But otherwise wow!! Stunning design from Nokia. Screens too big for me but very nice.
Tons of nice photos at http://modmymobile.com/gallery/nokian9.
@ModMyKyle
man the screen is looking nice in those pictures
that's exactly the form factor missing in qwerty market - a thin touch screen. for all GHz and monkey glass junkies: a business phone has to last at least a day of heavy use, has to be usable with one hand while waiting in airport security line with a coat and a suitcase in your other hand, needs copy paste and survive a drop down the stairs. that's why there are so many BB and Nokia E-series candybar qwerties around in business use. they mostly look like they've been though a shredder, hammered and then blended but still in use and kicking. note that on your next flight.
Hey, is that a front facing camera with flash? If so - win.
@RoyFokker Just read all of your posts on here and I like the way you think. Still rocking that Sony/Ericsson? Bet it still works. My N95 is still my main ohone. Ah the good old days. Anyway, I'm rooting for Nokia despite some ugly choices. This phone isn't quite it for me, but I hope the N900 comes out with sum 850/1900 luvin.
@maboroshiinoginzuishou *phone... Bloody iPad and its antics.
@maboroshiinoginzuishou Sure it's working - UIQ3 is crap, but you can mod it enough to make it useful. The hardware is sturdy enough, it'll do just fine until I decide on something running current gen tech. Still, can't beat just plugging the thing directly into USB, and using it as a 3G modem, or transferring files in mass storage mode... not to mention true multitasking since 2006. And I'm also rooting for Nokia here - it's the comeback guys who always bring the best stuff to the table, and Nokia has been hard at work it seems.
definitely not an N9. That's still symbian. Nice looking phone though and the UI feels much more refined now than 5th Ed.
@wqreqw
F*ck off.
This could very well be a prototype of the N9 before Nokia made the decision to go with Meego on N series phone from here on out. That's why you see it running Symbian 3. If it is the N9, I'm kind of bum that it only has an 8 megapixel camera instead of the 12 on the N8. The N9 is suppose to be the flagship right? So everything on it should be better than the model below is.
@asiandeity
That's not how it works.
The N8x series is the imaging series.
The N9x series is the flagship, that has as much as possible, but is not the best in everything.
The N95 8GB/ N96 were the flagships, but the N82 had the better camera.
The N97/N900 were the flagships, but the N86 had the better camera.
And now it's the same with the N8 and the N9.
I've seen the N9 and it's not this. It is an old prototype of a different phone.
@Goc
Please tell us more! :)
@Goc
And that right there is Nokia's biggest problem in the high end. They're too afraid to have a device that's the best in everything. They seem to forget that the N95 at the time of its release WAS the best in everything, and that is the one reason it was so successful. That formula worked. Time to do it again.
The Nseries will still have Symbian!!!! IT'S CALLED THE N8-0_ LINE. WHEN NOKIA SAID THE NSERIES IS GOING TO BE MEEGO GOING FORWARD THEY MEANT THE N9.
@LessThanDug Actually, the N8 is the first and last Symbian 3 N Series phone. All other N Series after the N8 will have Meego.
@asiandeity
Actually, there will be multiple versions of the N8, of which this could be one.
Please, try to understand that Nokia's new naming scheme means that N8 is a LINE of phones - not just one phone. Which means that this phone is N8-01 and it is running S^3 and will be officially launched next month. There will also be other phones in the N8-line launched later this year - all running S^3.
N9 is a completely different LINE of phones - all running MeeGo and the first two phones will be launched in the Nokia World in september.
These are facts, so lets stop guessing the name of the phone.
@mooses
+1
I like it. Nice looking screen. But I also long for something beyond Symbian from Nokia. For those of use who like to buy unlocked phone it's nice to see Nokia pushing the price down with well spected mid range devices. Hopefully Meego devices will debut under $600.00 or $700.00.
Damn! It is so good, such a huge screen... Now I don't know waht I want best - the awesome camera in N8, or this awesome keyboard and huge screen in E7! W what the heck - I"ll buy both of them)))
im getting n8 to flavor up my phone collection, i9000 is great for entertainment but its camera is worse than 3 year old n95, which my mom loves XDDD
No secret when things are make in China.
There is even a website dedicated to their copycat and proud of them. Go to this site if you can read Chinese.

Check 1:02-1:06. There's a second keyboard layout, is it Russian?
- the os build is from march
- it is a N model (the model is not written in the OS, it does look it up)
it might have been one of the N8 prototype that wasnt selected as final model (actually that's very likely, it has the form factor the N8 was supposed to have)
it's by no means recent.. now the question is how they got their hands on it, if its not something nokia gave them last week, but rather a prototype a dude has been using since march and sold.. then my above reasoning makes complete sense
@zob bleh i forgot some stuff:
theres a FM transmitter - thats N series.. and pretty highly convinced its an early N8 nothing else.
this website pretty obviously write "oh long time weve had a new proto etc".. - they know its the N8 not the N9.
looks great as a prototype, 4 inch screen, im hoping it has 64gb on board along with micro sd slot........ and an avi player hmmm what else would i want???? swype.... my galaxy s has it and its a pretty cool feature! needs good speakers..... what would be even better is twin micro sd slots, is that extra slot for usb on the go like the n8?
Hate to break it to you all, but that's not an N9... N9 prototypes are either bright green or silver and definitely run Meego. Symbian is being relegated the midrange.
Looks like they haven't learned any lessons with the keylock button on the side.
Extra parts, means more stuff to break.
Half the n97's i looked at locally to buy had the keylock button broken off.
Where's the kickstand? Hmmm... Symbian instead of Meego? Hmmm...
Finally, a worthy upgrade to my E71...It's funny though, according to the name you'd think it was a downgrade.
the N95 wasn't Nokias best camera-phone, but the best all-arounder. I expect the next MeeGo device to follow suite. The reason why I'd suspect the N9 wont share the camera from the N8 is that it would add a couple of mm in bulk, as the bulge does in the N8. That's the offside of the huge sensor
