Opera Mini users increased 4.2 percent in a month (and other interesting tidbits), says Opera
Opera's just released its State of the Mobile Web report for May of 2010, and its touting its continued growth in the space, with Opera Mini usage increasing 4.2 percent over the previous month, and a 7.2 percent gain in overall page views. Good news for them, undoubtedly, but they also have interestingly found that the hours 8:00 pm and midnight are the biggest for browsing -- unless you live in the UK, where you're just as likely to browse in the earlier hours. Nerds. Hit up the source link for the full report.

8:00 to midnight is when I get my browse on.
@wakeuplan
Us Americans like to browse porn at that time it seems
@wakeuplan
8:00 to midnight is when I get my fap on.
There, I fixed it for you.
I like the Opera mini browser on the iPhone, I would much rather some other options though...Firefox or Chrome would be great.
@illmaticstill
Would be better if they'd get their web-standards back up to par first.
@lamefork Agreed
@illmaticstill
I don't really "get" Opera Mini on the iPhone. Unless your connection speed is just horrible, I can't understand why you'd want to use it over Safari. It's zooming isn't anywhere close to as smooth or versatile and the rendering is terrible in comparison. I can see it if you're still using a 2G iPhone, but I just don't see the appeal when you're on wi-fi or 3G.
@ebgolfin Uses less data than safari and loads pages faster. So helpful for people who don't have an unlimited data plan when browsing away from wifi. Although honestly, I do use safari or vanillasurf on iPhone more than this. And would use firefox / chrome if they were options.
I gave it a go but it didnt bring anything more to my mobile web experience
Why is the iPhone in the front?
@anotherworld its an old picture, it's always been that way.
@anotherworld
um because it's the most popular smartphone?
1.7 milion in a few days .what you wanted the nexus one to be in front? did it get even 200k + sales?
@anotherworld
Why do you care? It's just a stinking picture, for Christ's sake.
@anotherworld I can tell you why. Because this image was taken from Operas web site which was made when O mini was released for iPhone.
@max1c because Engadget loves when Apple is the center of attention (I usually avoid making these comments, but Josh was extra sensitive on the podcast last week and I'm feeling a bit trollish).
Coming from a Sprint Touch Pro, Opera is more important to me than the actual phone program. I hope they continue to grow and implement new features (finger gestures!) for all versions.
Sorry but random question..whats alt.engadget? lol
more on topic, well with smartphones becoming more and more popular, you would expect to see a rise in 3rd party mobile browsers..
Opera's use is increasing because it's the only viable alternative to android's "browser" or the iPhones Safari.
Give us a mobile Chrome or mobile Firefox and watch those numbers decline.
@bfdhud On Android there are many alternatives to the default Browser including mobile firefox (although it's still in beta). Opera mini still remains the most complete mobile browser.
@bfdhud Atomic Web Browser on iPhone is very nice. Tabbed browsing, ad blocking, privacy mode, etc. Quite customizable.
I don't get the "alt" section. This is a mobile/internet post isn't it? Looks like dead on the subject to me. But this is in "alt" and the lung in a microship is in the gadget section. That's weird.
@SeeKo
This is in alt and the iphone twitter app update is in the main section.
My only gripe with opera mobile (not mini) is that the symbian version does not include Flash. Other than that, All I have to say is that had it not been for opera, I would've dumped symbian ages ago, cause the default browser sucks balls.
@I like things I still don't know how you can use symbian.
@anotherworld I like my phones to perform their task - that of being a phone first, as well as have rich multimedia features (8mp cam/720p recording/playback etc) :)
I want know why Skyfire isn't a popular, probably the best mobile browser out there IMO. to me opera mini is fast but i just don't like the way it condenses most sites
@Drawkcab Ti Daer Skyfire has a long way to go before it's as good as opera. The only advantage it has now is the video option. It is much slower and I, for one, do not like the way it reshapes web pages when you zoom in rather then just zooming in and giving me the option to scroll laterally.
Steve Jobs recommends to use a different browser than opera. On his iiphone (yes, his has 2 i's for double the ego) it made the phone get so hot that it burned his fake cancer moustache right off his upper lip ...fortunately his cancer wig was only slightly burned...
The problem now is that he can no longer twirl his moustache when he does his evil dictator impression so he is really pissed !
Thats why he recommends a different browser when you have a fake cancer moustache...
8 to midnight huh?
That freaky deaky time!
Oh yeah....high five! LOL
When does Opera come to Palm's WebOS?
opera mini runs much better and smoother on my 1st or 2nd gen ipod touch as on my milestone. so they could work slowly but surely on some equality to provide the same smoothness to other platforms.
Great, but, where is the update u lazy bastards. It's slow on the iPhone 4
I love Opera Mini. It is the epitome of what a mobile browser is supposed to be; Fast & Efficient.
I've used all the mobile browsers before (except android browser) and for 90% of the browsing I do, it simply is the most effective way to get my web fix. I like Mobile Safari and Opera Mobile 9.7 as they are more full featured and can handle complex scripts much better, but over several years, I've found that I simply do not need that level of "power" offered by Safari and Opera 9.7.
It simply is just faster for me to fire up Mini and do my general surfing. It's no nonsense, no-fuss, time-efficient browsing. Everything a mobile browser needs to be. I still keep have other browsers installed as sometimes (rare) Mini doesn't do well on some sites. Most of the time it's pure win though.
One problem, the feature set of the browser sucks. Full zoom in or out, that's it. Even two finger pinching means full in our out.
Lame hat is lame.
Opera is the only browser I use, its just far too quick for me to even consider going back to the native browser on my HTC hero, its buggy but the speed makes up for it.
I prefer Opera Mini over mobile Safari on my iPhone. Wayyyyyy faster. There are a few things that don't work perfectly, but it takes 1/4 of the time to go through my web browsing vs Safari. Hopefully they update it to make it better.
I would like an official version for Android, not a beta.
I like the speed but they need to improve the rendering. Sometimes entire blocks of text are missing on sites like Joystiq.com.
Long time fan of Opera, I use both desktop and mobile/mini versions. Glad to see they have continued growth.
I like the zooming on Opera mini. Sure, theres no pinch to zoom, but the way the browser lays out the page renders it obsolete. The text is all in one column so you don't have to go from side to side anymore. It irked me at first cause i was used to using pinch to zoom but after a while it became the best way for me to browse.
Great for them, but is anyone else having the following problems?
º Only two sizes to zoom with photos. (No scaling.)
º Inability to view videos or audio. (It just opens Safari and then doesn't work anyway because it leaves "Opera" in the code.)
º No response to clicks. (It detects the click but just sits there, you have to double tap hyperlinks or search buttons.)
I like the desktop browser (and its incorporated torrent downloader!) but on the mobile front, find it lacking.
Waiting in line, comparing prices while in a shop, Walking to the car, Walking to work from the car, waiting for the elevator, during a boring meeting, waiting for lunch, while eating lunch, while waiting for other to pay for lunch, While in bed. That's about my daily average use.
@wqreqw No speaking Englich? You sell me Nike Bikini? On Pa-Pa-AL. aaahhh...
Too bad that Opera Mini is Blocked by all Network Operations in Pakistan. It was my fav. web browser
Opera was invaluable on my work blackberry because the standard browser sucked so badly. But on the iPhone? I really don't get the point at all, safari is so much better.
Just downloaded opera from AppStore. Damn it is fast! Finally I can get rid off Safari. :D hope more people discover this awesome browser.
They must of counted how many time it was downloaded, but not how many people uninstalled 5 minutes after use.
