PlayStation Plus coming via PS3 firmware 3.40 (update: now available)
At last, the first post-E3 firmware update for the PlayStation 3, and as you might've suspected, this one's got PlayStation Plus packed into the mix. We've talked about the service a bit so far, but to recap, $50 annual nets you a 50 percent discount on PSN titles, early access to betas, and one hour of demo time on select full titles (among other benefits). If you're not willing to shell out the Ulysses S Grant, however, however, there's a few other treats in the software patch, including five-star ratings for content purchased on the Store, video editor and uploader for Facebook and YouTube (note: not a video capture service, gotta use what the HDD already has), and expanded integration into Picasa and Facebook photo galleries. Speaking of Facebook, a new app will appear on the social site for showing off your PSN profile and befriending others. As usual, no exact date for the firmware is given, but if history's any indication, it won't be very long at all.
Update: We just checked our consoles and, sure enough, the update is live. We're downloading now and will let you know if there's anything peculiar.

"a 50 percent discount on PSN titles, early access to betas, and one hour of demo time on select full titles (among other benefits)"
for 4$/month? .. awesome!
PS3 froze up shortly after installing the update
I do like the service, but I don't like the part, "...free games and add-ons are yours to keep and use the entire time you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber..."
Well I tried out the video editor, it handled editing 1080i footage (barely) but I did run into an error trying to play the clip back (bad enough to were I had to re-start the system) .
If you're an X-BOT, please read:
PS+ DOES NOT CHARGE FOR EXISTING FEATURES. EVERYTHING THAT WAS EVER FREE HAS REMAINED FREE. PS+ OFFERS *NEW* STUFF FOR THE FEE.
Soooo tired of seeing people spreading false info.
Wait. So is there cross game chat?
Does anyone know if this is still a glorified rental service? Or can we now keep our stuff after the subscription expires?
@bwazy You still lose the games if you cancel. Why do people think they should be able to keep the games if they cancel? I don't expect to continue using Netflix watch instantly if I cancel my Netflix account. The expectation to keep all the games is kind of silly for a $50 year ($4.17/month) service. If I was paying $15/month, my opinion would change.
This is slightly off topic but as soon as I updated I can't seem to access songs that I bought for rockband anyone else having this problem?
And again another useless Firmware update... All these new updates add are useless options (like bad facebook intergration) or widgets that you can actually also just use through the browser itself as most are nothing more than just shortcuts to the browser. I want OtherOS back, and I want USEFULL additions like expanding the codec support, BC through full softwareemulation (appearantly it's already done, but is being withheld because they can make more money on redoing some games in HD).
I personally haven't seen ONE usefull/good thing since the 3.00 firmware, and not even really since I've bought my PS3 which had the 2.something firmware..
I'm downloading now :)
No Netflix yet?
well... i just downloaded and tried out the video editor and it did not recognize the eye create video i just made as being a video copied onto the system after the 3.40 update... which leads me to believe that these two sony softwares made for the ps3 have a communication problem...
Ok bought it, not sure if Plus includes Qore I thought it did. The latest Qore showed up as a $3 buy for me. Maybe it will start from next month.
Full game PS3 downloads started as well, I am not sure if they were before, Infamous at $29.00
You can browse what will be included in the Plus subscription, it shows up as a PLUS sign in the store.
Seems most PSN games will be discounted by 10-20% and the addons are free.
There is a plus sign on the friends that have Plus subscription.
"however, however"?
sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I have a 500GB HDD in my main PS3 and at least 40GBs of that is music. Sony of all companies needs a better solution for finding music (and video for that matter) on PS3. Right now it's a total bitch.
The PS Store gives an error after installing the update. Anyone having the same problem?
