Neato XV-11 ships out next month, will assassinate dust bunnies for money
Let's face it, a geek's solution to keeping floors clean will typically involve either family members, robots, or a combination of both. For the latter two groups, we've got news that Neato's XV-11 is all set to start shipping this week, with retail and expanded online availability by mid-July. The XV-11's biggest selling point is a laser-based room mapping system that will theoretically allow it to avoid objects other robo vacuums would detect only by impact. That should also deliver more efficient route planning for the little sucker, while the saved up energy will be channeled into what Neato claims is "the world's most powerful robotic vacuum system." Whether such brazen claims are enough to merit your $399, we leave up to you. Sure looks like a mean machine, though.
NEATO ROBOTICS SHIPS SMART, POWERFUL ROBOT VACUUM CLEANER TO KEEP ALL TYPES OF FLOORS METICULOUSLY NEAT
The Neato XV-11's Room Positioning System™ Technology and powerful vacuum system makes people's lives easier by making cleaning easy, thorough and convenient
Mountain View, Calif., June 28, 2010 – Neato Robotics™, a Silicon Valley startup pioneering new products to free people from household chores, today announced it will begin shipping its first Neato XV-11™ home robot vacuum cleaners to consumers beginning this week. Based on advanced technologies, Neato Robotics engineers have created a simply smarter robot that thoroughly cleans an area without you needing to be home. Customers who pre-order the highly-anticipated Neato XV-11 at neatorobotics.com will begin receiving them in early July, and additional units will be available for purchase via retail and online partners beginning in mid-July.
The Neato XV-11 all-floor vacuum system is designed to meticulously clean floors on a daily basis; ensuring owners enjoy neater, healthier homes and more free time for themselves. Using its laser-based Room Positioning System (RPS) Technology, the new robot vacuum cleaner has a 360-degree view of a room, allowing it to map the most efficient cleaning path by analyzing walls, furniture, doorways and other obstacles up to four meters away. It avoids most obstacles that other robots can only detect by impact. Once it outlines the designated area, the Neato XV-11 covers the perimeter first and then methodically cleans inside it using a back-and-forth pattern to ensure complete floor coverage.
The energy savings it conserves from its cleaning efficiency has been redirected to the world's most powerful robotic vacuum system. At the vacuum's core is a centrifugal compression impeller that follows jet engine airflow principles. It creates sustained high-powered suction, allowing the Neato XV-11 to thoroughly pick up dirt and debris with unprecedented cleaning performance. 1
"The Neato XV-11 is a true vacuum that's designed to provide complete floor coverage so your high standards are not compromised," says Max Safai, chief executive officer of Neato Robotics. "In fact, over time and with consistent use, the Neato XV-11 is even more thorough than humans."
Some of the other innovative features and benefits of the Neato XV-11 all-floor vacuum cleaner include:
· Scuff-free navigation: The robot's RPS technology constantly updates its internal map so it can accurately detect objects greater than four inches in height and carefully clean around them without damaging furniture and walls.
· Low- profile access: The robot vacuum cleaner's low profile (less than four inches high) allows it to clean under beds, sofas, and toe-kicks in the kitchen.
* Smart design and large dirt bin: The Neato XV-11's D-shape allows it to better clean the corners of a room compared to other circular-shaped robots. This industrial design also allows for a larger dirt bin (660cc or .69 quarts)
· Self-docking to re-power: After completing its cleaning, it returns automatically to its base to re-charge itself. By utilizing the charging base, the robot is charged and ready to go when it's needed most.
· Cleaning scheduler: With its easy-to-use interface, consumers can schedule the robot to clean every day, resulting in a more spotless home.
Pricing and Availability
The suggested manufacturer's retail price is $399. The Neato XV-11 includes a 30-day money back guarantee and a one-year limited hardware warranty. 2 In addition to ordering on the Neato Robotics website, the Neato XV-11 will be available for pre-order via retail and online channel partners such as Amazon.com, Hammacher Schlemmer, SharperImage.com and Robotshop.com on July 15 with shipments of new customer orders beginning in August 2010. Additional channel partners will be announced soon.

Nice!!
Also kinda looks like my DVD player lol
@Beto4209
Dude that is one sick Sega Genesis Mod! :P
@Beto4209
Looks like the Atari Jaguar.
Make one with the body of R2-D2. A three foot replica should suffice. /Win.
@Phenomenon
But R2-D2 won't fit under the bed. But I really need to get one of these though. I need a new vacuum anyway.
@donv69
you really want a movie robot making sucking noises near your kids
its mj all over again lol
At least this one got the latest firmware built in. Won’t have to wait 6-7 months to upgrade while the competition excels it by light years.
I heard that while the brain/algorithms are advanced, the square design doesn't lend itself to corner sweeping goodness like the ol' trusty round roombas with their extended whiskers.
Think I'm gunna wait for another competitor to upgrade.
My roombas aren't smart, but running once a week they catch everything and the place is clean which is all that matters. I do lift my kitchen chairs though to vacuum that eating area properly.
Looks cool but does it empty itself? I mean it might clean up and then leave huge pile of dust in middle of the room.
Also price could be a little lower for me.
I didn't realise how much these had come down in price, I remember models costing thousands. Might have to take a look at what's available.
@petebob796 When introduced, they were only $500-600, plus some "virtual walls" you needed to buy. They were never thousands to my recollection. Robot lawnmowers can be $3K to 4K, but they're WAY smarter, and way more complicated. I've been looking for one of those for a while now...
I'm waiting for mint, will be better for the wood floors.
@stoney1973
meant to post this link too:http://mintcleaner.com/simple/
@stoney1973 Everyone I know that has wood or tile floors usually also has:
1) Carpets in bedrooms
2) Rugs placed here and there.
Unlike most that can do solid floors and carpet, this would get stuck. Pretty limited functionality IMO, coming from a long-time roomba owner (I have three).
@Ducman69
we just have the one rug in the livingroom, which apparently the Mint would skirt around.The rest of the house is wood flooring,apart from kitchen and bathroom which is tiled, which is also good for the mint.
the roomba is quite tempting though.
@stoney1973 Gah, did you notice the part about it needing a ceiling mounted "projector" for it to be able to do it's job? That immediately took it off my list....
Im gonna stick to doing my own vacuuming thanks no wonder kids are becoming lazy these days :P
@Ducman69 Racism wont get ya far in life you know
even if that was a joke
@Jordo1234 I make dead baby jokes, and you complain about that one? :D
Looks neato. I can't beleive nobody has made that joke yet.
@Spaldinggreat Damn it, I was about to say that.
Bet there is a military version with guns and facial recognition. Skynet is coming....
My Roomba Discovery bit the dust and I needed a new rob vac. I was considering waiting for one of these, but decided on a high end Roomba instead since iRobot has been learning from issues pre ious roombas have had and these won't have a useful track record for at least another year.
eagerly awaiting one that can go up and down stairs
My cats have some hair that says these things can't handle a real job....
How do roombas do at transfering from hardwood to rugs? Particularly rugs w like fringe on the ends, I feel like it would get tangled, but really want something like this...
@Hey19 Fringe is the enemy of ANY vacuum. If you have carpet with fringe, you can not use any robot. Get a carpet without fringe, and they do great transitioning.
@zelannii actually roomba has fringes covered. Go to http://resources.irobot.com/index.php/howitworks/US/3334619 and click "won't get stuck" to see it defeat rug fringes. I have a roomba and can verify that this system works.
@Hey19 Go to http://resources.irobot.com/index.php/howitworks/US/3334619 and click the "carpet to hard floors" link to answer your question. Roomba is awesome.
I really don't need a robot vacuum for the carpets, especially for this money, and it's still limited to a couple of rooms tops (no way to "program" it to understand how to go find a whole floors worth of rooms, so I'd need like 4 of these...)? I might be able to make use of one in the kitchen, given the crumbs and foot traffic, and that might save me or the wife sweeping for 10 minutes a night, but our kid will be old enough to do that on her own in another 2-3 years, so I don;t care to blow $400 on something to do that for me.
What I really need is a hardwood floor care robot! I have a LOT of hardwood, the entire first floor aside from the kitchen. Vacuuming hardwood does nothing. I need something that CLEANS hardwood (like a scuuba, but for hardwood, not tile and linoleum). It needs a vacuum out in front of polishing wheels where scrub brushes normally are, and a fluid system for hardwood. I'd pay $600 for one if they made it. I can't even find a decent manual vacuum/floor cleaner for hardwood, all the floor cleaners out there SUCK. (most especially the steam units that use no chemicals, they made the floor look WORSE, and took an amazing amount of physical effort to push around) I'm ready to tear up all the wood in this place! I spend 3 hours a week cleaning these floors, and only 30 minutes after I'm done, I can see the grime, footprints, and fresh dust. It's cheap laminated builder's hardwood, not the real stuff, so none of the waxes or polishes can be used, only oil soaps, and with it being a slick, shiny floor, they don't work well at all. I've bought 10 different things to clean the floor with, and returned every one. A robot DESIGNED for hardwood needs to be built, and if it ran 4-5 times a day for a few weeks to get the build-up off the floor, and then 1-2 times a day thereafter, it would be wonderful, and my floors would look good. I can't do that every day. It takes 30 minutes to sweep these floors, and near 1 hour to mop them... and if I'm lucky I'm doing that twice weekly and they STILL look horrible.
Someone, please, make a hardwood specific robot for laminate hardwood floors!!!!!
The looks of this thing caused my non-existent dyslexia to tell me that this thing assimilates dust bunnies.
Umm...
They should knock a few shekels off if you trade in a Roomba. Its a good way to get at the already installed iRobot user base. Sayin...
