Pages for iPhone gets a full walkthrough
We've been seeing hints here and there that the iPad versions of Apple's iWork apps will eventually trickle down to the iPhone and iPod touch, and now it looks like we've got some definitive proof: 9to5 Mac has published a thorough screenshot walkthrough of Pages. As you'd expect, it looks a lot like a smaller version of Pages for the iPad, but there are some interesting tidbits here and there: all documents sync over the air with all your iOS devices, there's integration with the oft-forgotten iWork.com, and you can export in .doc and PDF in addition to Pages format. Interesting stuff, to say the least -- hit the read link for the complete set of shots.

Even with a bluetooth keyboard, would you really want to write up a document on your iPhone?
@zangetsu2
If you don't have an iPad, a netbook, a laptop or anything else available, then yes.
@zangetsu2 If that was the last resort than yes.
@ashleythehottiest
And it's an important ammo for iphone to have in the battle to bring in the enterprise IT decision makers...
@zangetsu2 This is definitely fake... Design sucks and looks copied and pasted from iPad. This is ridiculous that Engadget would post something like this just because it is related to the iPhone. Wow....
@zangetsu2 I don't think it's intended for creating full documents, probably more like quick changes that need to be made on the fly.
@JeremiahBarrar
Interesting you'd say that...
I though iWork for iPad was also designed by Apple. You are blaming them for copying themselves?!
@who said what um no... I mean the photoshoped images use photos from the iPad app from this page:
http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/pages.html
If you believe this your very gullible.
@zangetsu2
It's hard to imagine why I'd have to resort to a telephone before a pen and a piece of paper. Putting the inconvenience of editing on such a tiny screen to one side, I wouldn't want to be caught dead typing on a phone in a classroom or professional setting. You'd look like an immature fool, texting away to your friends while the grownups are working.
@zangetsu2 People do it with their WinMo devices all the time with Word.
@bjbjohnson
I guess that makes sense. It's better to have options than not.
I just can't see myself ever using this, especially since it's probably not free.
@zangetsu2
No, it's not free, but the source link claims it will be a universal binary for iPhone and iPad. If that's true, I could definitely justify paying the current $10. The iPad version is very nice (I haven't bought it yet, but I've used it on my coworker's iPad), and having the flexibility to use it on iPhone when necessary is a great value to me.
@zangetsu2
That same question can be applied to Blackberrys or any other smart phone...so yes, yes you would.
Got pages on my iPad and I must say i'm very impressed. I have numbers as well which I love but it does annoy me that you cannot export to excel with numbers but you can export to word with pages....
Question: Who thinks they would write a paper on their iPhone?
Me
@derekdevine I would, If it's only something small then I would definitely use it
@derekdevine In a last minute meeting, this is something that can come in handy if you dont have anything else to take notes on.
And if one of my employees way typing on his iPhone blackberry or any other device I would tell him to take notes like a human.
@Robhimself
How's the dark ages doing for you?
@Robhimself Some people can type/text faster than they can write.
@Rabid that is why there is a "Notes" application
@JeremiahBarrar But you cant upload or edit those notes with another iOS product.
I dont think many people will use this, but I guess some people could.
@derekdevine
i think the whole point is quick edits rather writing something from scratch. besides, there was one book for sale, 'the painted man', that was mostly written on a Nokia. rubbish book by the way, don't bother reading it.
that aside, i still think Microsoft's offering on Windows Phone 7 looks better.
@Robhimself
And we all know you would only say that to make yourself feel important and reaffirm your status over your 'employees', right?
@suicidebob Not at all, I would never talk down on anyone based on title or payscale but I do expect a certian level of respect to people when they are speaking and I don't feel like they can give that deserved attention when tapping away on a device.
@twilson Its called professionalism. Ticking away on a tiny keyboard is distracting and attention should be focused on a speaker not a tiny screen.
This is a lot of Apple WIN for one week...
@MattsZ
when they get MS office then it'll be a win. Iwork is garbage.
@cardfan
I guess you've never used it. MS tries to Ape iWork with every new release of Office. Right down to the menus and the UI.
Nice.
I say that they’re fake! Apple would never release an app with such differing styles - just look at the ‘Cancel’ button against the top bar graphics.
I’m not saying the rumour isn’t real, I’m just saying that these aren’t the screenshots of said rumour.
@CoffeeCoffee
It hardly looks out of place.
Wait, I'll just check the Calendar app. Oh yeah, I see a dark 'cancel' button, a blue 'done' button' and a red 'delete event' button. And the app has a brown bar.
Shocking, eh?!
@suicidebob
There a certain je ne sais photoshop about them.
@suicidebob
I disagree. The colours within the Calendar app totally fit, since they’re conforming to the basic motif of iPhone design. However, looking at the Pages for iPad and iBooks app, whenever Apple looks to create a differing stylised design (mimicking leather and wood, respectively) they always go all the way with it. Just look at... http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/pages.html
@forx
I can't see it, but you're obviously the expert!
@suicidebob
The placement of the text formatting buttons (Bold, Italics, Underline) can’t be correct.
@CoffeeCoffee yep... some images from that page, they match pixel for pixel. plus you can tell the image is Photoshop ed, using some hex tools and data from the picture
@CoffeeCoffee
A bunch of people also said the Iphone 4 was fake Engadget said it wasn't. Apple would never release a phone like that!!
Don't assume it's fake just cos it doesn't confirm to your expectations. Anyway, this isn't a release build, and some of the colours may change
@suicidebob you are in denial man. look at those images. they are copied directly from the iPad app.
@suicidebob, @JeremiahBarrar
You’ve both got fair points. I’m just edging on the side that there are too many idiosyncrasies to say that they’re genuine images.
I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough!
@suicidebob
You ARE happy chappy aren't you...
Chill, I'm sure we'll find out if it's real at some point and, if it is real, I expect you to be the first comment on the Engadget article saying "I told you so!".
@CoffeeCoffee the leading is SERIOUSLY off on that bottomost line of text. Does not look right at all. Sticks out like a sore thumb to me.
Also.. the outline around the .DOC icon is a lot more blurred when compared to the other two
@JeremiahBarrar
100s of people here said the same about the Iphone! Or have you forgotten that already?
Seriously. Keep the 'Fake!!' comments for Youtube.
And why wouldn't the Iphone and Ipad apps look almost identical? Consistent UI and all that, remember?
@suicidebob
That was why I highlighted these as fake images in the first place. The UI between this and Pages for iPad isn’t totally consistent.
@forx
Nah, it's just there's so many 12 year old experts yelling 'fake' at any opportunity as if they work for Apple.
Hopefully you'll come back and say "I was totally wrong and no one should ever listen to me when I give made-up opinions on tech products cos my credibility is at absolute zero". See you soon.
@CoffeeCoffee
Weird, JeremiahBarrar is calling fake cos it's identical, you're calling fake cos it's not identical.
I'm so confused, I don't know what to believe anymore!!!
@suicidebob
To be totally honest, I really don’t really care that much. It looks fake to me, and that’s my opinion. If you don’t think it’s fake, then that’s your opinion; everyone’s entitled to their option. You don’t have to advocate the typical Engadget commenter cliché of attempting to overthrow people’s perceptions, thoughts and musings.
If they release this, I’ll probably buy it. If they don’t, I won’t. At the end of the day, there’s already a load of apps in the app store that do exactly this. So, is it even worthy of its own post on Engadget?
@suicidebob I believe someone made the images to get publicity, some are blurry, discolored, and don't seem to have apples skill at designing apps and making them look great
@CoffeeCoffee
I'm just pointing out the ridiculousness of calling 'fake' on something when there's absolutely no evidence to believe that it is fake.
I'm not attempting to change anyone's opinion.
But, let's be honest, we're not all experts. Calling 'fake' is just a really, really boring stance to take
@suicidebob
Hmm. Conversely, Is there any evidence to believe they’re real?
Whilst it’s all but confirmed that iWork for iPhone is likely to be released, thanks to Apple’s AppleCare page leak - there’s nothing stopping somebody creating some Photoshopped images.
wow.. I could do all this on my palm treo from like 1999.. and it even had a keyboard
