Samsung Epic 4G preview
We've seen our fair share of Samsung Galaxy S phones in the past few weeks, but the Sprint Epic 4G version (or the Galaxy S Pro, as we'd previously suspected it would be known) looks like it could take the cake. The phone has all the same specs as the others family members -- including a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 5 megapixel cam, a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, and Android 2.1 -- but it also boasts a front facing camera and a physical keyboard. So, is the new slider as epically amazing as we've been imagining? We got to spend some time with a unit this afternoon, so hit the break for some early impressions and a quick video.
- Hardware: The Epic may not have a 4.3-inch screen like the Droid X or EVO, but at 4 inches, it's close -- and for all practical purposes, it appears to be just as large. The slide-out physical keyboard doesn't add as much girth as we expected, though it still adds to the height of the phone. While the curved edges give it a similar look to the Galaxy S we've seen overseas, it has four touch sensitive buttons along the bottom instead of those physical buttons. Oh, and about that physical keyboard, it's pretty glorious -- the keys are slightly raised and there's a bit of space between each of them. We have to admit it looks a bit odd to have a keyboard with such a big screen, but if anything it's a throw back to UMPCs or MIDs.
- Screen: The Epic 4G has the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display as the Galaxy S and Captivate. But we aren't letting that diminish our love of it -- every time we see it we are pretty blown away by the crispness. Yet again, we didn't get to test the display in sunlight, but indoors it was seriously bright, albeit glossy. (Oh, and if you missed it, check out our head-to-head between Samsung's Super AMOLED screen and Apple's Retina display.)
- Software: The Epic 4G will run Android 2.1 at launch, but Sprint tells us it will be rolling out the 2.2 update not too long after it hits the market. Just like the Captivate, it has the latest version of Samsung's TouchWiz skin, which isn't too distracting and actually polishes up Android a bit. It's also preloaded with Swype and Qik as well as a few Sprint applications -- including the mobile hotspot app, notably. Speaking of Qik, we did confirm that the Epic 4G has a VGA front facing cam, while the one on it's backside will take 5 megapixel shots.
- Performance: Unlike the early version of the Captivate that we saw, the Epic 4G's 1GHz Hummingbird CPU was zippy. As you will see in the video, scrolling was super snappy and there was no noticeable lag in opening applications like Amazon's Kindle app or firing up the camcorder. Video playback also looked super smooth. Sprint's still not giving out information on pricing or availability, though we're told the price will be aggressive and the handset will be available before the end of Summer.

That thing is money!
@MuahMan Check out that live wallpaper. It lags on snapdragon phones but the Samsung Galaxy's Hummingbird processer with its crazy good GPU runs it SMOOTHLY.
I just wish it didn't have a keyboard and mimic the iphone UI look, otherwise I'd be all over this thing.
@MuahMan
I bought an LG flip phone about 5 years ago, and upgraded to a Droid Incredible a couple weeks ago. That was a huge jump for me, especially since I used that LG phone to a literal death.
I can only imagine what I will be upgrading to in another 5 years...
I will have this phone. Why this, and not the Evo 4G?
Emulators.
@MuahMan
Transformers 2 sucks as a movie but makes a great HD movie sample to show off ur 3.5inch+ AMOLEDs/Retinas/SLCDs
@MuahMan
First Samsung phone I'm impressed with, usually find their stuff boring but this is tops. I do have to wonder how their own mobile OS will turn out though - why aren't they pushing that on these high end devices?
@Kedar
How does it mimic the iPhone look? Seriously...
I prefer physical keyboards. On screen ones just don't do it for me. Personal preference though.
@MuahMan
The specs and "screen" half are money. Something about that keyboard screams TI-89 to me.
@quasistellar ^5
@MuahMan
What's up with all of these self flattering names? First the Incredible and now Epic?
What's next the HTC Chuck Norris?
Anywho, looks kickass...coming from an iPhone 4er.
I want one....in GSM flavor & made by HTC. BUT, nooooooooo HTC ll just slap a snapdragon in there alongside Sense UI to slow it down :(
I don't like Samsung's future software/support
@Bjay
Since this phone is going on the 4 top US carriers and 1 big regional carrier the consumer base will be huge, and thus the number of baked ROMs from XDA-developers will be amazing.
I'm not too worried about Samsung supporting it because I know XDA will.
@MuahMan that thing is a MONSTER! look how big it looks compared to the evo. and how big in the hand
@michaelwub
I agree. This phone looks pimp. I have a feeling this phone will sell the most in the U.S. out of all the Galaxy S phones. Physical qwerty, front facing camera, and 4G. Win. We'll see though after the holidays.
@MuahMan
This is SO my next phone. Can't wait to have this and the EVO. I hope the Entertainment store opens sooner rather than later--before Christmas?
@MuahMan
oh shit...hes holding it with both hands says the iphone 4 user.
Sorry had to.
Man this phone is nice i like the screen. But my heart belongs to the EVO!
@MuahMan good, finally a phone that has enough features and faster (better) processor to give the N8 a tough competition. Nokia can easily loose this one if they dont remove the lag.
@MuahMan I'd like to see Joanna do the actually review so we can get some more of her UNBIASED opinion, rather then "it's fast, just not iphone fast"
@b3nj4m1n *****That's what she said.
@MuahMan best thing i have seen in a while .. certainly worth every penny .. power machine
@BrandonHarris
Just for the record, I would totally buy the HTC Chuck Norris.
@Kedar
Ditto. This phone simply blows the competition away. I just hope Cyanogen has a custom 2.2 ROM ready for it with all the goodies retained (video codecs, live wallpapers...etc) when its released.
@opc100 The TouchWiz UI mimics the iPhone. For those who like it, good, but for us who hate the iPhone.. luckily you there's OpenHome.
@Kedar Does TouchWiz not allow widgets or what are the big differences between TouchWiz and stock Android?
@Roisen
It really speaks volumes about Samsung's craptastic device and driver support when people are relying on a hacking community to support a phone instead of the manufacturer.
Would like to see comparison shots against the original Droid for overall size and keyboard comparison.
@MuahMan Questions:
Does it use a standard USB mini B connector instead of a proprietary dock?
Does it support TV out? If so, via what cables?
Standard or proprietary?
Does it work as a standard USB harddrive?
If answer1 and answer2 and answer3 then Me.buy = true
@Wello Also LauncherPro and beautiful widgets can help clean up that KIRFy iPhone mess.
@MuahMan Correct me if I'm wrong(serious question) but wasn't there an article here showing the hummingbird processor to essentially be the same as Apples A4 chip? I only ask because the scrolling on this device, per the video is significantly faster than on my iPhone 4. Regardless I'll say this gets my vote for best Android device so far. It's not over the top huge for the sake of being huge(ala DroidX), and overall is very aesthetically pleasing.
@Waltah
i would buy the HTC Chuck Norris even if it was a home phone with tape on the back that said HTC Chuck Norris.
@Extinction It supports DLNA. Hooking up a phone to an HDTV is such a gimmick. I prefer to just stream content using either my xbox or DLNA tv.
@Extinction
This phone looks amazing!!! Just wanted to get that off my chest before I answer your questions.
"Does it use a standard USB mini B connector instead of a proprietary dock?"
Yep. good old mini USB.
"Does it support TV out? If so, via what cables?
Standard or proprietary?"
It's actually video out via DLNA.
"Does it work as a standard USB harddrive?"
Yep. As does every Android phone.
@BrandonHarris
Don't forget the Hero!
@Kedar the lag is a software limitation due to the cap of 30 fps not the full 60 that the evo is capable of
@Kanga
Well, I'm still using my old RAZR v3
@BrandonHarris
How else do you compete with a name like Droid Incredible?
@quasistellar Does the Evo not do emulators? I'm ready to leave iPhone land too, and loved that live Mario background Engadget posted. Was all but sure I'd go Evo until I saw this. I'll trade .3 inches of screen for a physical keyboard anyday. Only problem is that it's by Samsung, pretty sure 2.2 is the only update we'll get. Then it'll be the old way of doing things, want the update, buy the newest phone.
@Kedar how could you say that?! please hush your mouth about the keyboard. tons of phone makers have abandoned keyboards and that kind of talk instigates those poor decisions. there's about 55 Android phones without a keyboard and about 5 with one. know this, some of us (a lot, even) love and need a keyboard.
and finally a top-tier phone, WITH A KEYBOARD!
(ps- no offense to those who don't like keyboards)
@atebit He was saying (and im in the same boat) that playing emulators with the keyboard is much better than the touch screen.
@MuahMan
they should rename this phone.
Samsung Money 4G.
@MuahMan
Sprint's lineup IS money. Wow, they have the most impressive line up of phones and cell tech (4G). Maybe a hail marry, but it just make work WITH the 2 point conversion.
@MuahMan
It really does look amazing.
If they made it with GSM and kept everything else exactly the same I would be all over it.
@Kedar Hmm,..No lags on HTC Desire. What are you talking about?
@Mike10010100 & Deimos
Thank you for your assistance, it is appreciated.
Polite/kind individuals are a rarity online.
I think I found the replacement for my iPhone 3G.
@Extinction
I think he meant to say micro usb cable. The only one still using a mini usb cable is Blackberries.
@husher oh ok, I was sure he meant something else, Evo's more than capable. And i'm in that boat too, I'd rather have a keyboard for emulators as well as text/email. Im loving this phone
@Extinction "I think I found the replacement for my iPhone 3G."
My exact sentiment as well. Farewell AT&T.
@Extinction
Does it use a standard USB mini B connector instead of a proprietary dock?
Yes.
Does it support TV out? If so, via what cables?
Standard or proprietary?
DLNA for wireless TV-out, and you can also get SD video out from the 3.5mm jack. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMnOvAvCTiA
Does it work as a standard USB harddrive?
Yes.
@michaelwub There own os is more of a feature phone smartphone os it will do good in Asia where hi tech phones are big but smartphones are alot less popular.. Bada wouldnt work in the US apps are too big here..
+1 no one can touch the evo 4g!!
