We've seen our fair share of
Samsung Galaxy S phones in the past few weeks, but the
Sprint Epic 4G version (or the Galaxy S Pro, as we'd previously suspected it would be known) looks like it could take the cake. The phone has all the same specs as the others family members -- including a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor, 5 megapixel cam, a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, and Android 2.1 -- but it also boasts a front facing camera and a physical keyboard. So, is the new slider as epically amazing as we've been imagining? We got to spend some time with a unit this afternoon, so hit the break for some early impressions and a quick video.
- Hardware: The Epic may not have a 4.3-inch screen like the Droid X or EVO, but at 4 inches, it's close -- and for all practical purposes, it appears to be just as large. The slide-out physical keyboard doesn't add as much girth as we expected, though it still adds to the height of the phone. While the curved edges give it a similar look to the Galaxy S we've seen overseas, it has four touch sensitive buttons along the bottom instead of those physical buttons. Oh, and about that physical keyboard, it's pretty glorious -- the keys are slightly raised and there's a bit of space between each of them. We have to admit it looks a bit odd to have a keyboard with such a big screen, but if anything it's a throw back to UMPCs or MIDs.
- Screen: The Epic 4G has the same 4-inch Super AMOLED display as the Galaxy S and Captivate. But we aren't letting that diminish our love of it -- every time we see it we are pretty blown away by the crispness. Yet again, we didn't get to test the display in sunlight, but indoors it was seriously bright, albeit glossy. (Oh, and if you missed it, check out our head-to-head between Samsung's Super AMOLED screen and Apple's Retina display.)
- Software: The Epic 4G will run Android 2.1 at launch, but Sprint tells us it will be rolling out the 2.2 update not too long after it hits the market. Just like the Captivate, it has the latest version of Samsung's TouchWiz skin, which isn't too distracting and actually polishes up Android a bit. It's also preloaded with Swype and Qik as well as a few Sprint applications -- including the mobile hotspot app, notably. Speaking of Qik, we did confirm that the Epic 4G has a VGA front facing cam, while the one on it's backside will take 5 megapixel shots.
- Performance: Unlike the early version of the Captivate that we saw, the Epic 4G's 1GHz Hummingbird CPU was zippy. As you will see in the video, scrolling was super snappy and there was no noticeable lag in opening applications like Amazon's Kindle app or firing up the camcorder. Video playback also looked super smooth. Sprint's still not giving out information on pricing or availability, though we're told the price will be aggressive and the handset will be available before the end of Summer.
On that note, until we get our hands on a review unit, we leave you with a brief, standard def video of what's clearly shaping up to be Sprint's Android phone of the month:
@husher
You dont need a flash. The camera has night mode that captures low light conditions extremely well.
@ConceptVBS Are you able to point us to any links that show low light samples?
@ConceptVBS Actually, I've just seen samples of shots taken in darkness and in Night Mode. Darkness = forget it. Night Mode does look good, but its because it just leaves the shutter on a fraction longer to get more light in. The problem with that is you really need to be very still or it causes blurring as there is no image stabilisation.
@supamario2008 They don't force you to use it (like Apple does forcing you to hold iPhone right) and it's virtual keyboard has Swype the fastest method of text input on the planet!!! ;) ....this is barely bigger than Galaxy S which is barely bigger than it's crApple iPwn 4 cousin with the same Processor, sixaxis gyro & game installed. Don't forget surround output via it's DLNA Media Server allowing you stream music, movies, games to your router/pc/ps3/HDTV! .....so imagine, play a via WiFi DLNA on your HDTV in 720P!!! :D
If anyone other than apple begins to support reading embedded track art (not album art) i will buy their mobile device. This often overlooked feature could come in handy for audio books
matte back? thats epic indeed! why is this the only s series phone without all that glossy shit?
I'm definitely going to be buying this phone the moment my contract ends with Verizon in 2 months. I don't have 4G in my city yet (Columbus, Ohio), but Columbus will have it soon!
Sexy!
.
.
Engadget:
So Apple's products gets a 720P recording and its competitors gets only a 480P recording?
How biased is this? Holy crap.
@ConceptVBS
Yes. Apparently Engadget -in June 2010- don't have a pocket device capable of uploading half-decent 480p to youtube.
This was particularly important because the strongest feature of the Epic 4G was the Super AMOLED screen.
Going back to the phone:
There is a notification LED indicator on the top right corner of the phone next to the FFC.
can i get it without the 4G antennae? please Sprint? i'd love this phone, but i don't want to pay $240 (+tax and fees) more over 2 years for a feature i'll never even be able to use...
@willowtwf
350$ a month!
I can pull large numbers out of thin air as well. my monthly on 4G is 60$
Whatever happened to Samsung SCH-r900? Samsung announced in March that it will be their first 4G phone in which Metro PCs would be the carrier?
That keyboard looks terrific.
Samsung's design, quality, software and support has been atrocious from my personal experience. I think they have a mentality to be a component supplier only. I will not go by their specs alone regardless of how good they look on paper.
Is the virtual keyboard multi touch as well? Cuz i have the moment and im either getting this or the evo but i need the on screen keyboard to be able to keep up with me too cuz sammy is all smart n have the keyboard backlight turn off when the phone is gonna die and thats good and everything but then i cant see in the dark so i resort to the on screen one but i type too fast and it misses some of my taps some1 plz just say yes or no ive asked this question on like 8 dif sites/pages XD
@travy17 The virtual keyboard can support "swype" which is superior to multi-touch. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Alas if all these goodies were offered by HTC, we know this would be worth so much more. Given Samsung's track record of plasticky hardware and 1yr lag on software support. One would imagine they're more display and components ppl hence AMOLED and DLNA versus HTC's polished exterior and some care about how you fare with software by the time the next android comes around.
For some reason I was so dumb that I didn't realise that physical keyboards are optional on touchscreen phones, as their is also an on-screen version.
If WP7 holds up on the Software front, that Dell Lightning seems like the ideal phone (Mac support pending).
Yes i Returned my Evo 4g 3weeks after i got it because i wanted to get this phone... However i had the Samsung Moment before and the GPS on the moment is seriously Bad and Dangerous.. Does anyone know if the Epic come with a Better GPS system.
