Samsung says all Galaxy S phones will get Android 2.2
Samsung has mercifully confirmed at an event in New York this evening that all Galaxy S versions -- including the Captivate, Epic 4G, Vibrant, and Fascinate -- will be receiving updates to Android 2.2 Froyo later this year and offer compatibility with Flash 10.1. All of the devices will be shipping with Android 2.1 out of the gate, so considering that Froyo's already launched, we're sure there'll be no shortage of pressure to get the updates fast-tracked. Sprint says it won't be a long wait on the Epic, but otherwise, we don't have any time frames at this point.

Froyo FTW!
@aubreyq FTW at least until the next version comes out.
@aubreyq you'll have a month or so to rejoice until Android 3.0 first preview expected in october
@aubreyq Correction: Galaxy S + Froyo = FTW!!!
@aubreyq
thank you, Google, for not making me buy a whole new device to enjoy your newest, ever so tasty treats.
love,
me
@aubreyq
Wish they also add camera flash to make true winner, but still overall great android phone.
@statickeith
correction: Samsung Galaxy S (the real one, not the gimped and weird ass US versions) + Froyo = FTW!!!!
Why Samsung Why?
You want to be number one, yet you take away everyone's FFC and take away the LED flash. Good job
@elijahblake There's no LED flash to take away, Sprint's Epic will have a FF camera and Samsung took away nothing. Carriers make the decisions on what will/will-not be incorporated into a phone. In my best guess, US carriers, particularly AT&T asked for a different design and that's why Samsung is taking an extra month+ to get these devices out to the U.S.
Do you think they want Apple to get in there with a month head start? No, that's why they chose their launch dates, but they didn't want to slow down their production because the U.S. wanted a reference design change.
@aubreyq Didn't Samsung in the past promise an update to 1.6 on some phones and then changed their mind?? Yeah, lots of trust there.
Bet you anything we get Gingerbread on our Nexus One before these phones see Froyo.
@spielnicht
I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here.. they practically just told Moto and HTC to go F themselves..
@techlord
The Sprint Samsung Epic 4G has a camera flash. You can see it in the pics here: http://www.engadget.com/photos/samsung-epic/
@aubreyq
What about Win 7? ;)
@iroq d mullet
Also, thank you Samsung, for developing that A4 with [Intrinsic] Apple, then coming back to the plate after they took 1/2 the IP and the high road for all the glory to themselves.
These phones are truly becoming a must have after this announcement--and it doesn't matter which carrier you belong to.
wooo! :D
Will they offer them with out their skin? I would rather have stock 2.1 android then crazy samsung skin ...
@shhaight so root or get one of the themes that look vanilla, now that I'm in the market all I do is see UI. UI functionality, which touchwiz does add, should be the only reason to desire a UI, if you looking for form get a different skin...problem averted.
Will that be your one and only update, a la Behold II? That dick move makes me unlikely to trust them enough to commit a two year contract to one of their phones.
@sacguy
Exactly, all they have committed to is upgrading an unreleased phone to an already released OS, big freaking whoop. While I own an Android phone and think it's great the lack of OS support is a huge drawback and I have to admit Apple's so far 3 year support for their phones is really nice.
@reallynotnick
YOU ARE A COMPLETE IDIOT!
iPhone's OS is so fragmented! Have you even used one before? You have to buy the next one in order to use the new OS!
@Wiizer
Wow caps lock and everything, and yet you are completely wrong (assuming that is not some sort of weird sarcasm that I missed). I actually owned the original iPhone and before I bought an EVO it was running 3.1.2 and it shipped with 1.0. The 3G iPhone can run the latest OS, 4.0 and it shipped with 2.0. Way to look like an idiot talking out of your ass, prepare to get buried.
@reallynotnick right but can your 3g multitask or use the new wallpaper feature? can your 2G record video?
@sacguy I'm not sure there is a manufacturer that has given stellar 2 year support on Android thus far, however, IMHO we have to give the early adopters a bit of slack because there wasn't internal Android competition and these devices don't have a lot of muscle.
@reallynotnick We get all the updates, except the key features! But what do you expect from a company that didn't include a video camera or 3G, will never support flash, no MMS ever on first models, no multitasking for 3G or less. you pretty much need to buy the latest phone to enjoy any of the updates. 3GS users better enjoy 4.0 because they won't get anything useful after this
@sacguy
running 1.6 on a galaxy here, no hope for an upgrade either
plus if samsung had its way i'd be stuck with 1.5 still
super amoled would be nice, but there's just no way i'm going with a samsung again any time soon
What about Gingerbread? Also is it going to be like the behold 2 and take forever to get an upgrade?
Samsung....fuk yea!!
Just like the behold, right?
*rolleseyes*
Is this the update that makes the phone like an iPhone?
@memaf
That would be the "antenna" update.
@CallDon that's the antenna update for the iPhone that makes it more like this? ;-)
Win
And thats the end of the iphone for the highend users... grandma u can take my "smart"/dump phone .. iphone 4 ..
Thanks for the live coverage Engadget.
Gee, remember what happened the last time they promised something? Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, ...
@pika2000
....I know you're Samsung for sure.
@Shravan I will take this promise with a grain of salt
At this point in time, I think it's safe to say we were all expecting Froyo on this device.
The REAL question is whether the Galaxy S will get Gingerbread. After all, it would be a real shame for a device to have a software support span of less than a year.
@Mecha2142
given their record, its doubtful. They want you to buy a new one as well. Seems the only way to get anything done on android phone is to root it.
For Samsung, this is an accomplishment.
When is the epic release date?
I wanna be epic but I don't think I can wait...
@lrhunt87 Count me in too.. I NEED A RELEASE DATE! I GOTTA GAGE MY EXCITMENT! LOL
Yeah, no thanks Samsung. You won't earn anyone's trust until you can actually support your products instead of just dumping them on the market.
You Captivate and Fascinate me with your Vibrant and Epic phones.
Will they get 2.5 or 3.0? whatever the next version after 2.2 is?
@Zachary
Thats the real question.
Will they get it?
@JAG
Worse case, it's called rooting. Hell you can root a G1 to run 2.2 in most ways (albeit very slow).
And there's the benefit of a open framework. Case closed.
@recharged95
Are you going to buy a phone just cause you can root it and install last OS update?.... OMG
Root is great, but i prefer a manufacturer which will worry about my phone and will update it in the future, and I think samsung is not the company that will update your phone beyond 2.2.
This post just gave the finger to all of you idiots who said Samsung won't be updating the Galaxy S. You know who you were. MORONS!!!!
I agree with everyone else about the updating...they have to do 2.2 since the phones aren't even out yet, but with samsung's track record in this area I have no trust that they will do the next update.
The behold, the epix (winmo even...not just android they promise (lie) to update and then don't) maybe others...
Nice looking phone, but no thanks samsung.
This reminded how Microsoft PCs was with Apple Macs in the earlier days. It's almost the same thing with the phone market, Apple being a self proprietary system and google with it's Os on third party manufactures but I dont think this method is going to work how it did for Microsoft back in those days. The consumer expect simplicity along with unification. With the iPhone it's all there. Google needs to understand this. How are you going to do updates for one phone while the others have to wait. It's just cumbersome to thing that if i buy a phone from any of these third party manufactures, I might end up waiting for an update, It's ridiculous. I sure hope Windows phone 7 isnt like this. hopefully it's similar to how they do their service pack updates. where by it works on all phone.
