Sony's Yoshida says PS3 is now turning a profit, no plans for a price cut

We'd already seen some evidence that Sony was lowering the manufacturing costs of the PlayStation 3, and it looks like that's now finally starting to pay off -- Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed to IGN that the console is at long last actually turning a profit. Of course, that profit is apparently still a fairly small one (and might just be breaking even), with Yoshida only saying that "this year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3," and that "we aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to." That also unsurprisingly means that Sony still isn't planning a price cut anytime in the near future, with Yoshida instead saying that Sony will focus on more bundles like Move / Sports Champions package announced at E3.
I remember paying those 800$ for mine ughh and now people it for less than 299$ are you people crazy

i bought my ps3 a year and 2 months after it came out and only payed $477 with a target discount and i got 5 free bluray movies so i really only payed around $320-360 in Jan 2008 haha to u launch owners just like i will laugh at those who wait in line 1 week for a phone!

Can you please not comment on articles related to the PS3? No cares and people find it annoying see comments from desperate fanboys such as yourself. What relation do games for the PS3 have with the PS3 becoming profitable for Sony? You also contradicted yourself when you said that LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted 2 sucked, considering they're EXCLUSIVES ON THE PS3 platform and NOT AVAILABLE ON ANY OTHER PLATFORM. And Uncharted 2 and LittleBigPlanet are both very stellar games that you've never had the pleasure of playing.

thats what they mean by its finally making a profit, theyve finally paid off development costs and backlog of losing money via hardware costs and are now making profit
I love my PS3.
Yeah, it was pricier than others when I bought it for $500. But I paid that to get the BC offered at the time. (That and the $100 Wally World was throwing in.)
I'd say I've gotten my money's worth over the years and look forward to at least investigating new stuff like Move and PSNPlus.

@NHAnimator The biggest reason people probably get xbox is because of A: The huge amount of people and freinds on LIVE and B: 1st person shooters, ps3 has them but everyone loves there halo, right? Also, I'm not saying move is a copy of wii, but really, does it do THAT much more than a wiimote? Also, Xbox can be a hardcore gaming machine, but also is targeted at family's with kinect. Kinect will be for family's while normal controller gaming will be for gamers. With a product being targeted at all types of people, it will THEN suceed.

Hate to debunk some of those myths, but...
My friends are not gamers. Like me, they are 40+, but unlike me, they do not play games. I play games because I got a 2600 and 12 games for Christmas one year. I've been hooked since.
My wife does not play games, but she uses the PS3 to store photos, watch Blu-ray movies, and playback her MP3's. One game she enjoys playing is HVB, which uses the Sixaxis like a Wii/Move - you swing it. That being said, I'd say that it for us, it's a family console.
I don't know if the Move will do more than a Wiimote. And I don't care if it does the same thing. I would just like to see it do the job better and I would like to see it introduce my wife to more games that she would enjoy playing.

@cdf74dc9 Who said I owned or liked the Wii? I have an Xbox 360 and PS3, but that doesn't mean I can't make a joke at their expense. I don't really give a shit who's getting my money or whether they make a profit. Personally I like the Xbox, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna defend them (MS) or buy every product they put out. I just find it funny that the Wii's been making like $20 per system since day 1 and now Sony get $0.02 from each PS3 and makes a big deal about it.

All you need is a $300 bundle that ups the hard drive space to 250GB (and maybe an included HDMI cable for once), and a $400 bundle that has the Move, the PS Eye, and Sports Champions. It couldn't hurt to throw a Sub Controller in their either though.
This is good news.
Lets hope they are in the black (enough) at the end of the generation, that they can justified (to themselves business sense wise) do the PS4.
