iPhone 4 gets a $1 alternative to pricey Bumpers
If you ask us, Apple should be giving away free bumpers, lollipops, and anything else it can think of to keep its otherwise loyal followers from revolting. But the Great Bitten One isn't doing any one of those things, and most of us are stuck either having to pony up $30 for the official salvation from self-inflicted signal harm or looking out to the grey markets. Entering this morose situation with a bit of ingenuity is Oliver Nelson, who alerts us to the fact that rubber wristbands of the sort your favorite cyclist wears are apparently an almost perfect fit when stretched around the 4's antennae. He advises that a 1.125-inch long by 0.125-inch wide incision (into the unstretched band) is necessary to keep the 30-pin port and speakers open, but otherwise it seems like a pretty effortless and dirt cheap way to avoid all this drama.

Awesome! Now where to put my waistband on my incredible...
That is so GHETTO! lol. Apple... you kill me.
lmfao.. iPhone4 = joke
So you can support cancer (or support being against cancer, whatever), and stick to Apple.
Despite the fact that there are many flaws with the plan (such as all of a sudden being frugal after buying an expensive phone), it might work because of Apple being so image conscious. If this caught on, it might be the bad PR needed to get something actually done.
So, someone buys a washing machine for $1200 and it is delivered. The vendor and delivery man say nothing and simply take your money. After it is installed, you turn it on and nothing happens. You look behind the machine to see if it is plugged in and you discover that there is no cord at all. You call the vendor and they happily offer to sell you the cord for another $200 regardless of the fact that the machine will not operate properly without it. Now, if you are a brand fanboy you happily hand over $200 more, make excuses to everyone else that may question that decision, and then live happily ever after until the NEXT problem. Uh huh. Right. That works. Only with Apple monkeys.
cant you just get one of those big post office rubber bands for free a the post office?
If you need a rubber band to fix the problem, developers blew it.
For those people that complain that the rubber band looks ugly, why don't you just put one of those zagg invisible protectors on your phone? I've had one on my 3GS since day one. It keeps the phone looking brand new. As a bonus, it has a rubber texture to it...so it gives the phone a nice grip (since the iPhone 3G(s) are pretty slick). The only negative from those things is that it takes a little bit of time to put it on right (since the 3G(s) have round backs). This should not be a problem for the iPhone 4 though, since it has a flat back.
"Cant make calls on your new iPhone 4? There's a rubber band for that"
@XEOD ROFLMAO!! That pretty much says it all!!!
aaand there goes all of my signal....
Modern phones are aesthetic pieces as well, and apart from a screen protector, should be usable and beautiful without any add ons if that consumer so wishes. I don't put anything on my HTC desire, its slim and sleek. Clunking some rubber defeats the beauty of the thing.
Apple should just suck it in, do a recall and fix it properly if they want to salvage their name as maker of high end smartphones
the cant fix it. it was designed this way on purpose. they have to redesign the whole phone to "fix" it.
A DIY rubber / elastic band is simply a Non-Apple solution to an Apple design problem - Temporary and Not practical IMO.
Test. Earlier comment did not register.
Those 1.7 million sold over the weekend number have Apple haters taking to every article detailing this antenna issue.
This maybe an issue, I don’t own the phone. But it won’t keep Apple from making money or being the leader for the next few years in the smartphone industry. This is a small, but cumbersome issue for some. However, abide this issue the majority have spoken that the iPhone is the superior phone and Apple will continue to rein. Apple’s bottom-line speaks for itself. I’m just being honest.
Apple will need a big issue than this antenna issue to fall from the top spot of the mobile phone industry. Users will be reluctant to give up on over $200 worth of apps to switch phones and buy all their apps again on a different brand. Nevertheless the majority of phone user like simplicity and iPhone wins right now.
It's nature to hate tho.
@soloist
"However, abide this issue the majority have spoken that the iPhone is the superior phone and Apple will continue to rein."
News for you: they don't reign. Look it up. Ruined your day, that Google for "mobile phone market share", didn't it?
"Apple’s bottom-line speaks for itself. I’m just being honest."
If you have shares in Apple then good for you. Otherwise I want the company I buy phones off to make as little as possible as it means I have to pay less for my phone. If I give Samsung $600 for a phone they're selling for $300 does it suddenly become a better phone?
"Apple will need a big issue than this antenna issue to fall from the top spot of the mobile phone industry."
Dude, if the antenna doesn't work this phone *isn't* part of the mobile phone industry.
"t is just a phone. Not worth it." - Steve Jobs
Cheap alternatives never work.
iphone lovers won't use it if it doesn't have the apple logo emblazened on it..
I'm not an Apple fan by any means, but the company I work for almost exclusively uses AT&T products and I was up for a $199 upgrade from my very old blackberry to the iPhone 4, so I figured why not since it's GOT to be better than the BB which is SO slow and really hard to deal with regarding apps, and screen size, etc, you name it, it's old.
Much to my chagrin my order was just recently pushed through and I'll be getting the iPhone 4 in a few days and frankly, not looking forward to it. My wife has a Droid that had 1 issue 1 time where I had to hard-reset the phone and that fixed it, otherwise, 0 issues day-to-day. I read all this shit and read all the blogs and news sites and comments, etc an frankly it's sickening.
Sickening because our world has become a bickering hole full of "experts" and "geniuses" and yet no one, truly no one is concerned about the problems in our nations. Hunger, famine, disease, water supplies, war, you name it, the world in the last 50 years has gotten so completely backwards we all (myself included) are terribly selfish, caught up in toys/gadgets/celebrity bullshit with no sign of it ending.
If everyone here, again, myself included would just put this much thought and energy, effort and concern into feeding the homeless, stopping disease, preventing financial meltdowns, etc... the world wouldn't feel so doomed. We should all be ashamed of ourselves for caring SO much and SO passionately about a communications device.
@CircusBrain True words. While I do own an Android phone I also do my part with donations to the Red Cross, Make-A-Wish Foundation and others. I recently gave away 25,000 air miles to rescue workers so they could reach the victims in Haiti. All in all I do what I can when I can. I don't by every new model out.. I do my research and then buy. Waiting for a DROID with a keyboard.. maybe it will be called the DROID X Slide. To be honest alot of people can be help by just a few dollars we would normally toss away on some unwanted accessory.
So you have to spend an additional dollar to have you shiny new iphone work correctly??????????????? Um ok?!?!?!?!?!
Epic win. Shame on Apple for trying to profit off their inferior hardware, but then again what else is new? Have you seen the $30 Mini Display Port adapters they try and sell for their already overpriced Macbook line? Or the $30 SD card reader and USB Type-A adapters that plug into iPod/iPhone/iPad Dock Connectors?
This is so sad... I mean rubberband sales are going to go through the roof and I didn't get it on it. Well, I'll stock up on paperclips because that's what the next iClone will need to make it work. I'll make millions off of these isheep!
@Wraih The paperclips will be used to fix the antenna problems I imagine.
Ahhhh hahaha... anyone need any bubble-gum for their ip4? Like I said before, who goes out & blindly preorders a phone (or ANYTHING?) before all the bugs are worked out... duhhhhh. I'll stick with Android phones! (Where the customer comes before the dollar.)
If you're too cheap to buy a case you shouldn't have the iPhone. Idiots
@Droidblowz
You could buy a phone that works and give me the Apple idiot tax difference if it would help you continue to feel superior. And then you could make calls too.
Man I feel sorry for the people that are having these issues I haven't had reception issues or spotty screens. Haven't dropped my phone to try to test the strength of the gorilla glass it's funny how people just have to have something to complain or talk about instead of just being happy with what they have.
This guy just saved Apple's *ss, really.
Orange UK told me to buy a case (from wherever I liked) and they'll credit the cost to my account - a reasonable offer I reckon. That way I don't mess around switching phones until the situation with a fix or recall becomes clear. Not ideal, but a reasonable stopgap measure for an otherwise cr@ppy situation.

Since when did Silicone become Rubber
LOL class action lawsuit has already been filed. Good going APPLE!!!
"1.125-inch long by 0.125-inch wide incision"
There's a reason why the metric system exists!
You know now that I think about it, the bad antenna might come in handy.
GF: where the hell are you, I been calling you all night and you don't answer!
iPhone user: ::shrugs shoulder:: sorry babe, must have been that problem with the phone, didn't get a single call
Ok has America gone blind to whats rite and whats wrong just to fit in.
I actually have gone from Iphone 3gs to Americas number one flop called the Iphone 4.
I just believe if you upgrade something no matter what it is, it should be better then what was out before and with the Iphone 4 its far from living up to the characteristics of the word UPGRADE!
1. The Battery Life is worse then Iphone 3gs
2. Mine has already started freezing (2days after my purchase with less then 15 apps)
3 Poor Reception
4 Email Trouble (This issue has been the only fix apple has resolved)
WITH ALL SAID WHY THE F DOES THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TEAM STILL HAVE JOBS!???
So for this BS alternative LIVESTRONG fix u can SUCK IT!!
Cause Im sure you nor I paid 2+ - 3+ along with waiting hours in line just for Apple to produce a sell out flop!!
As for the proximity issue, maybe they can design a head/face bumper for the front face of the iPhone and charge $30, just like the antenna issue: Problem Solved.
