Silky isn't typically an adjective we'd associate with
game controllers, but that's exactly how gaming accessory maker Nyko is describing the feel of their new Raven controller line for the PlayStation 3. The line includes a standard PS3 configuration as well as an
Xbox 360 inspired "alternate" layout which flips the position of the left analog stick and d-pad for a more ergonomic feel. Both will connect wirelessly to your system via a USB dongle, and will cost $35 once they hit shelves later this summer. But will any game top the entertainment value of the Raven promo video? Check it after the break.
Damn that thing is ugly.
@Sled
but engadget is right...that chick is hot!
@boxieblue
Is that Shawnee Smith??
@Sled
:o
@Sled
Where are you looking?! ... oh, at the controller?
@boxieblue
Her eyes looked crossed. I can uncross them.
@boxieblue she looks a little cross eyed
@cinematech Tends to happen when you are looking only centimetres in front of you.
@Sled the ps3 controller layout itself is pretty ugly. not good for fps at all.
@(Unverified)
IMO the Xbox layout sucks.
It all depends on what you're used to...
@Sled how could you guys see anything through all that lens flare? Jeebus, Nyko.
@Sled Agreed. And the 360 layout is not more ergonomic.
It's about time we had this option. I have been waiting forever for Sony to put the left analogue stick where my thumb naturally goes, like every single other console manufacturer since the N64 has done.
@iooioio
I don't know about you, but my hands fit the stock DS3 alright. Would look into the Raven when I need a replacement though.
@iooioio Completely agreed. I preferentially buy games on the XBox because the PS3 stick is simply in the wrong place. That and the Dual Shock triggers suck.
@iooioio Although at second glance, this controller doesn't solve that problem at all -- looks like two low-placed sticks to me.
@Aguiluz
Agreed. I prefer the remote to be symetrical. Also I guess I have small hands because the XBox controllers analog stick is too far from my thumb I actually have to shift my hand up which is not ergonomic.
@greyseal they offer two versions. the alternate version isn't pictured.
here's the alt version http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/30/nykos-silky-ps3-raven-controller-comes-in-regular-and-identit/
@gonintendo
I find that nyko controllers are great in features and quality, but my controller for the ps3 durability sucks. I pushed the anolog for it too hard and it cracked the thing off. That and the warranty sucks. I hope they fixed this in this version.
@gonintendo The alternative version layout is awesome; I hate where Sony puts the analog controllers (on nearly all its products), an Xbox layout alternative is exactly what I'm looking for. However I've never really had good luck with Nyko products, usually average at best in the past.
I have one Nyko's other controllers for PS3 (cheap from Amazon). These were the worst controllers I've ever used.
That controller looks like something bat man would have on his belt.
@DjPolo Maybe if he lost his fortune and started shopping at K-mart
Xbox360 controller + PS3 Slim = PERFECT~
USB dongle and not BT? Really?
@NHAnimator
Cheap controller is cheap
I personally prefer the 360 layout but its not like the DS3 layout makes my hand cramp or anything, I just think this thing looks hideous, DO NOT WANT!
@NHAnimator
I suspect the cost of licensing BT is the problem.
Oh, good, they prevent slippage.
Engadget, I don't know if you're blind or what, but it DOESN'T; I repeat, DOESN'T switch the location of the left analog stick and the D-pad.
It may look more like a 360 controller, but that is the exact same layout as the PS3 controllers. The analog sticks are symmetrical, instead of the a-symmetrical set-up seen on the Xbox controllers.
@Prevacator Read the source link to Joystiq. There is a PS3 version that does. The pic here doesn't show that.
Holy crap
well i think what is making that controller nice is the model thats showing it off lol
Here's info and a pic of the Nyko Raven (alternative) with the XBOX360 type controls
http://www.nyko.com/products/product-detail/?name=Raven+%28Alternative%29
I can only imagine how greasy finger prints and cheeto stains will be impossible to clean off that textured finish.
looks like a military grade product.... except its cheap :P
That D-Pad looks tiny and painful. A couple hundred quarter circle movements would probably take all of the skin off.
That's so Raven.
@Yanker
Darn, you beat me too it!
The unfortunate lady seems drugged :P
I just might get Xbox one. I think the one flaw that keeps me from really getting in to PS3 games is the controller. My thumbs bump eachother using the sticks on the PS3 controller, it's just distracting.
Damn! That video is FULL of videocopilot.net tutorials and products.
The intro uses the "3D Ball Dispersion" tutorial/project file, the flares are all stock "Optical Flares" presets...
I hope the "director" of the video wasn't paid too much ^^;;;
I played with this at e3 and it feels really good. It may b ugly but it really does feel good.
I think about batman when I look at it, unique design for sure and looks great. The model needs to practice holding objects with a steady hand.
i think it looks better then the original ps3 controller...
Why can't anyone make a PS3 styled controller for the Xbox? I'd buy a bloody xbox if I didn't have to hold my left thumb in such an awkward position the standard controller requires.
